A Cliché Year

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

May 02, 2021

"How could this of happened? I didn't even put myself forward! This is it. This years gonna be hell. I'm done for."

When anything happens, amazing or amazingly bad, we always end up at my house somehow. I've actually never been to her house. Apparently she has a strained relationship with her parents though I don't know why, but who am I to pry into her family relationships? Though they did help her buy a car so maybe things are better? When Camila  freaks out or celebrates she does so with a bang. This means that I normally read or in this case game until she's calm enough to communicate like a normal human.

"Yea it's a pretty shitty thing to do." I reply. Honestly this new game is great, who would've thought a black and white animatronic bear would trap a bunch of students in a school? And really, am I the only one who instantly knew who the culprit was?

"Raven love, I know you love having this calm persona though now it's not helping. I'm gonna be the laughing stock of the school!" Ok Camila's getting really upset, maybe now I should be a decent friend and pause my game... Only for a few minutes though.

"Well maybe it's not as bad as you think?" It's also not as if the teachers will let her retract her entry anyways. "Imagine how amazing it would be to dethrone the queen bee herself? And anyways, for some stupid reason I'm also in it."

"I'm nobody compared to her though, it won't happen......... Unless..."

She's not. She wouldn't do this to me....

"We go shopping!" And she said it, if I know what I want and can go at a fast speed I don't normally mind though Camila spends like an hour per shop. So much for my game.

"I hate shopping."

"Then the quicker we leave, the quicker we return." Knowing that I'm gonna be dragged along anyways I save my game, put it in my pocket and we head out.

                                                                                       ***

At the mall I am instantly drawn to the food court, until Camila holds my arm in a vice grip and drags me towards the shops. The first shop we go into is of course a makeup one. I have no clue about any of this stuff so in the earphones go. Turning into the next isle of random makeup stuff I see a familiar 5'4 freshman.

"Hey Elias." He gasps and turns around.

"Raven! Do you wear makeup as well?"

"Nah, the crazy one over there does though." Almost as if she sensed I was speaking about her the woman herself skips over.

"Hi! Oh my goodness you're so cute! Are you with Raven? Raven you need to tell me these things!"

"No." Maybe I should have prepared Elias for her craziness, luckily he looks like he's about to laugh so he must be fine. Turning to him I decide that Camila must've forgotten to say her name, "That's Camila."

"Ah. Hi I'm Elias, I am gay though I'm taken. Noah seems to be into him though."

"Who's Noah?" She asked shocked.

"I'm leaving. Bye."

"Adrian is at the food court!" Elias shouts as I'm leaving. Might as well keep him company I suppose.

At the food court I see the man himself sitting alone seemingly people watching. Heading over I sit across from him, "Hey."

He looks startled for a moment then nods, "Hi."

"I met Elias while my friend Camila was shopping for makeup."

"Ah." I start to fear that he doesn't like me from the whole running thing but one look at his eyes and I can see guilt. We can't have that, he seems like a decent guy.

"Not a big talker are you?" I move so I'm sitting beside him, "Wanna watch while I play my game? I'll catch you up don't worry."

He nods with a small smile. Ok if Camila doesn't take the lead on becoming their friends then I will. They both are too cute, even though I have to stretch my neck to look at Adrian. With that we get through the second case in the game before the other two regroup with us.

"Hi, I'm Camila."

He nods, "Adrian." Camila smiles like the Cheshire Cat, I'm assuming Elias told her that he doesn't talk much.

Anyways, we eat and listen while Camila and Elias debate on the best anime shows, with me chiming in when they couldn't remember character names and then Adrian had to chime in once when even I didn't know. Afterwards we go from shop to shop which would normally be boring however once Adrian got used to me we spent our time discussing what we think will happen next in the game. I also promise not to play anymore until lunch tomorrow so we can react together.

It's at the very end of the shopping trip when I remember to tell Camila that I invited five guys to sit with us if they ever wanted to. Considering she had already met two of them and the fact that it was me communicating to others of our species for once she was ecstatic. In fact she insisted that we all sit together tomorrow.

                                                                              ***

The next morning I was tired but for once I actually wanted to go into school. Today would be hilarious.

"What are you smiling about? It's eight in the morning." Dad and I are not morning creatures but we try. Seeing one of us fully awake before eleven only really happens once in a full moon.

Issac sighs at dad, "I think it's great that Raven is embracing the morning."

"Nah." Is my intelligent response. Only so much can be expected of me at eight in the morning.

"Nah?" Now Issac seems intrigued. Both him and dad are now leaning on each other at the kitchen counter waiting for my response.

I grab an apple from the fruit bowl, "Camila and I were nominated for the prom thing, Camila got annoyed as it wasn't us who put ourselves forward and so she's now had a makeover like in one of those romcom things."

"What do you mean 'the prom thing'?" Oh dear dad's annoyed, "You should be proud!"

"I'm a junior, I'll not win anything. Anyways, I'm just curious to see how the school reacts."

We hear Camila's car suddenly pull into the driveway.

"She's a bit early." Considering her and I always try to be as late to school as possible this is quite a surprise.

As she steps out I gasp. How did I miss this outfit being bought? She steps out wearing a short sleeved crop top, high waisted jeans with a cute silver belt and - wait are those heels? The Camila I knew said the only thing they were useful for was murder!  She is probably around my height now with those on. Can you even wear heels to school? Ah well, she looks great.

"Camila, you are gorgeous. The whole school will be shocked." I can't believe that this is Camila. Does she have a twin she never told me about?

"Thank you Raven but I have never been so nervous in my life. I wanna go home and get changed."

I give her a small smile, "If thats what you truly wanted you wouldn't have come here in the first place."

"Hold on I've got an idea." I say when I noticed she isn't truly convinced. "Dad!" My dad is actually a fashion designer so if anyone will convince her it's him.

"Yea kid, are you gonna hug me goodbye for once?"

"Nah, you're here to tell Camila how good she looks."

He gasps to, "Camila you look great! I know my son has only recently gained fashion sense but he is right. Go show the world!" He's very dramatic. Something which I didn't inherit from him thankfully.

Ok that one hurt, but he's not wrong. I used to only wear t-shirts and joggers as I wanted something comfortable. Dad being the weird fashion designer that he is decided to make me try on things. In the beginning I was completely against it until I found one of my now favourite things in the world. Drumroll please: It's jumpers! I always value comfort and I discovered I could have comfort while looking good. Sweatshirts, hoodies, turtlenecks, I have them all, they're also literally all I wear. Ever since dad has been happier and I have been a lot comfier.

Today for example I'm wearing my favourite cream jumper which of course has a turtleneck, best thing I've ever bought - besides my bed of course. I've decided to pair this along with a pair of comfortable black jeans and trainers. Considering dad hasn't complained yet I'm assuming I look alright. On days where I forget to try or I commit a 'fashion crime' he normally shouts at me until I go change.

With that I grab Camila's arm after she thanks my dad and we go to the car.

                                                                                 ***

Walking into the crowded school I quickly blend into the crowd to let Camila have her moment. I can hear the gasps of many, which isn't surprising considering how good my best friend looks right now. What is surprising is that the crowd parts for her like it does for the queen bee and if the small smirk on her face is anything to go by she's noticed.

Every eye is on Camila yet for some reason I feel eyes on me. I look around and notice Samuel staring at me oddly, once again making my skin crawl. Quickly averting my eyes I see Noah once again standing in front of my locker.

Heading over I quietly whisper, "Is this becoming routine?"

"Ah sorry, it appears the way has been blocked by a load of random teenagers." He jokes quietly. I never say that I felt uncomfortable though he seems to notice anyways. I'm just thankful it isn't brought up.

"You can stay here then."

"Thank you kind sir." He says in a very bad British accent. It appears that he knows of my move to America from the UK. He also holds out a piece of paper to me.

I quietly chuckle, take the paper and stand close beside him, "No problem." With that we both go back to watching the Camila scenario.

Of course, Liam also notices the attention she's getting and makes his move, "Hey, I don't think I've had the pleasure of meeting you yet." He winks. Anyone with eyes can see where this is going.

"Camila. I can't believe we haven't met yet. The whole school seems to want to be your friend." She responds while giving him a flirty smile. Ok is it me or is she acting different? Or is it that I'm jealous of her spreading her wings? I never thought I was the type. I suppose I won't say anything for now and see. It should become clearer after a few days.

"Well at the moment there's only one person I want. Do you wanna meet on Saturday?" Wait isn't he having a party Saturday night?

"Consider it a date." Camila answers and then walks off. This seems to allow the rest of the school to function so Noah gives me a small smile and leaves. Though I notice she seems to have forgotten about me.

Slightly annoyed I open my locker, I also remember to actually look at the piece of paper. A small smile graces my face when I realise it's a phone number.

I can't stand romance movies. Too many clichés. Like really, why do people like them? It's not as if they ever change. After all, the guy always gets the girl no matter who's hurt in the process. Normally I make it my mission to either stay away from romantic movie lovers or covert them. Until I met my best friend that is.
