Emery suffered from the rain, but the ethergic magic permeating the air left a warm buzz on her skin.
She stabbed her staff into ground to absorb as much as possible, the
carved symbols lighting up instantaneously.
She suppressed the urge to shiver as she took a seat in the wet mud. Emery scooped dirt into her vials. In one, she buried a small round seed, in
another, a thinner dark seed, and the last a cube-ish lighter nut, which she set
aside.
Like forming a thread, Emery pulled a
thin wisp of ethergic magic from her staff, weaving it into a vial.
Thin, near-invisible etchings
took shape on the glass as it channeled magic into the seed.
Full and humming, the vial hovered in her outstretched hand, rotating steadily as she urged
the little seed to grow.
"Come on, come on."
She muttered as small pellets of hail pelted her back, and thunder
rolled dangerously overhead. She watched as it continued to rotate,
empty save for dirt.
Crestfallen,
she suspected a dud and reached for another vial. Before the
vial left her finger, a tiny stem, thinner than spider silk, was poking out
of the smidgen of dirt inside. Wide Eyed and a wider grin, Emery laughed
at a few tiny leaves forming along its stem, and cut off the magic booster to inspect her new seedling.
The sparkling leaves would shine for a while as the seedling continued to feed
off the ethergy stored inside.
Victorious, she sealed the vial with a
cork stopper and moved on to the other vials, repeating the process with
each one with success.
Now freshly soaked and newly exhausted, Emery had new
seedlings to aid her, little backup power reserves
for her magic. She'd prepare others to grow naturally at a later time. Now she'd greet dawn with a nap.
The Storm crawled on before dissipating into the pre-dawn light. The
air left overcharged with ethergy in its wake.
When Emery tried to wrench her staff from
the dirt to go back inside and immediately pulled her hand back to
avoid the discharge. She grabbed for it again, her hair on her arms standing on end
as she drew the excess ethergy through her, shooting it into the ground. Her
skin wouldn’t stop tingling for hours after.
