One hundred years ago, fifteen-year-old Adam LeFetti left home. He left his parents, his friends, his pets, and most importantly, his sister Lilac. He and his sister had the best bond of anyone. And he just left. Without warning. He just left. He had his reasons. All the girls in the school are asking him out, left and right, fighting for him, since he broke up with his girlfriend, Alex. A traumatizing basketball coach, and his cousins moving in recently. His baby cousins.
But still, he left. Without warning. And that’s kind of betrayal.
Let me tell you what happened. Adam had come home from school, having all those problems, and he was tired. “ Hey, Ad. How was school?” his uncle had asked him. “ Horrible,” he replied. The uncle looked at Adam’s mother, in confusion. Adam was already walking up the stairs, to his room. “ He’s just been having a… hideous school year,” the mother said. “ Ah, gotcha” the uncle replied.
Adam was sitting on his bed, looking at the note he had got from his mother at the beginning of the school year. He looked at it, downhearted. It had said, Dear Adam, may the school year upon your life be the best one yet. Love, Mom. He looked at that note, vexed. He crumbled it up and threw it in his basketball hoop, and it landed in the trash can.
There was a knock on his bedroom door. “ Adam? Can I come?” a female voice asked. It was Lilac. “ Okay…” Adam replied. Lilac came to it, calmly. She sat on Adam's bed. Adam was lying on it, sighing.
“ It’ll be better one-day” Lilac said, “ I promise”. She left the room, quietly, closing the door behind her. Adam kept repeating that in his head. It’ll be better one day. I promise. It’ll be better one day. I promise.
And he decided to leave. He packed his bags and took everything positive he could find in his room. He was over vexed. He was crossed. Just like Prince Zuko from Avatar The Last Airbender. How he wanted so bad to catch the Avatar. But failed. Many times.
He realized one thing. He hadn’t learned to drive yet. So how would he leave? He knew. He knew. He would take his bike. Easy.
He had to be discrete, as he walked through the house. He saw a light in Lilac’s room. She was calling her friend. It was almost midnight. “ He’s...he’s broke,” Lilac told her friend. “ I don’t wanna be pushy, but please. Take him on a vacation. Give him a break”. It wasn’t a friend after all. It was their grandmother.
Lilac was trying to help him. At the time, Adam didn’t know. Adam thought Lilac was doing something bad to him.
He walked outside, to his bike. He took out his phone and searched up Google Maps. He wasn’t sure where he was gonna go, but he knew he was doing somewhere. He decided to go wherever his bike took him. Without Google Maps.
So he rode. He rode his bike. He went far. Far away from his phone. So that’s how it all started. He ran away. But as he got older and older, he regretted it. But he had no idea where home was. He stayed in caves. And lived to be one-hundred fifteen years old. And everything thinks he’s dead. Except for two people.
