A Cliché Year

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

May 06, 2021

That night to my surprise Ryan texts me.

Ryan: I need help.

Raven: With what?

Ryan: Levi.

Raven: What about Levi?

Ryan: I like him.

Raven: I know.

Ryan: What?

Raven: I don't like texting I'll call you.

As I press the dial button he answers immediately, "What do you mean you knew?"

"This is the most frantic I've heard you."

"I wonder why."

I just about stop myself from laughing, "Noah and myself have quite the perceptive eye. I'm surprised you're asking me though."

"We're similar."

"That we are. So are you gonna tell him?"

He doesn't speak for a few moments, "How do I tell him?"

"For every person it's different I suppose.... I've got an idea."

I add Noah to the call. He yawns, "Hello?"

"Were you asleep?" I ask.

"Homework's boring. Sue me."

"Anyways, tell Ryan how to confess to someone."

Ryan says, "That's quite blunt, but why Noah?"

"Simple: he's the one who asked me out." There's no point in asking someone who's never actually confessed to someone advice about it when you can ask someone who's done it after all.

"Depends on the person-"

"Raven said that." Ryan pointed out.

"Then he knows what he's talking about. Some people like overly romantic gestures while others like something simple. Who are you confessing to?"

"Levi."

"Called it." Noah responded, "For Levi I'd say something simple and heartfelt is best. He seems like someone who would rather have a heartfelt confession than an expensive one."

"But how? I speak less than Raven."

"Raven doesn't speak much normally that's fair, though he speaks when something needs to be said. You're similar, you're just more shy." Noah explains.

I decide to but in, "It doesn't matter how much you say, what matters is the emotion behind it."

"See? He basically said all of what I said in one sentence."

"... I guess, thanks guys."

"No problem, tell us when you're gonna do it and what happens." Noah says.

Ryan responds very quickly, "Tomorrow."

"Wait what?" I can just imagine Noah jumping, or maybe falling out of his seat if the crash on the other side of the phone is anything to go by.

I decide to give an actual response, "I'm assuming you just want to get it out there?"

He sighs, "Yeah, the crush has went on for a year or so. I thought it would've went away by now but it hasn't. I think I just need to tell him and let him reject me."

"Why do you assume he'll reject you?" Noah asks.

Ryan answers, "Because he's straight."

I chuckle, "Ryan do you trust your seniors?"

"Yes?"

"Then you don't need to worry. Just tell him."

"Alright, I will. I'm away to bed now though. Bye." Ryan says. Noah and I say goodbye as well and the call ends.

                                                                                ***

The next day at lunch the seven of us were sitting at the table again, I don't know how I got this lucky to be friends with these people but I choose to not overthink it and just be thankful. Noah taps my hand gently and nods his head towards Ryan. Poor guy looks like he's about to be sick. I give him a look, he looks desperately back at me. I should help him shouldn't I?

I whisper to Noah when there's no attention on us, "Get Ryan to the track field in five minutes."

He looks at me confused until I get Levi's attention, "Mr Bowman has asked me to sort out a few things with the freshman. Would you mind coming with me? I need to ask a few questions anyways."

He looks excited for some reason, "Sure let's go." Noah smiles at me, thankfully he sees what I'm trying to do.

Walking outside with Levi he begins asking me questions, "What are you doing? What do you need to ask me? Does this happen often?"

Oh dear, I didn't think this lie through before coming out, it was quite spontaneous. Then I look at him jumping around excited and chuckle softly, I don't think lying will be too hard with this one.

"Calm down: Uh you asked all that very fast but Mr Bowman wanted me to sort through a few boxes for him and he also asked me to begin talking to the freshman... Making sure you all are settling in ok or something?" I respond calmly. It was technically a white lie as I was asked to do those things... Tomorrow.

When we get to the track field I get a text from Noah saying they're ready so I say to Levi, "I just need to go into the locker room and get the questions I'm meant to ask you. Do you mind waiting for a second?"

"Sure!" He smiles. He's like an adorable puppy.

Going into the locker room I leave through the other exit and circle around to where Noah is... And apparently the other three.

"Hey."

Noah held my hand softly, "Ryan told the others before coming out. Poor kid looks very nervous though."

Looking from our hiding spot I can see Ryan who is practically shaking. We can't hear them as we aren't close enough but we can see them very clearly. In the beginning Ryan is nervous telling him, Levi looks worried probably as Ryan doesn't seem like the type to get like this often. Then a few minutes later Ryan looks down but Levi grins. He grabs Ryan's hand... Just as it starts to rain.

"Oh they wouldn't right?" I say to myself. The others staring at me as if I've lost my mind.

"What?" Elias asks.

I just say, "Come on boys, common sense. Get. Out. Of. The. Rain."

Ryan looks at Levi happily and hugs Levi. He then notices that it's raining and goes to go inside. Then Levi pulls him into his arms and kisses him.

"Damn it. Another cliché marked off the list."

Gabriel looks at me, "Excuse me?"

"This year so far has been filled with clichés. It's annoying."

"Do you not like romance?" Elias asks.

I cringe slightly, "It's the opposite. I love romance, I love the idea of people being happily in love... I just hate the weird clichés that the romance genre have come up with. For example: stalking."

"I now see your point." Elias agrees, "But not all clichés are bad."

"I'll tell you when I find one of those." I tell him. The others laugh and when the other two seem to be done we go out (I still think we should all just go inside) and congratulate them.

"Wait a minute!" Levi shouts.

"What's up?" Noah asks.

"Raven you knew about this didn't you?" He smiles at me jumping around like a lunatic.

"Yup. So did Noah."

Levi looks shocked, "What?" The bell then goes.

"We'll explain later. Bye all." I say and walk away. I'm good at socialisation.

                                                                                      ***

Friday morning comes around and once again like every other day this week I wake up at five in the morning and eventually decide to go on an extra run. I get changed and quietly go down the stairs... Only to see dad by the door.

"Normally we don't mind exercise but you seem to be overdoing it a bit this week." Ok maybe running for an hour in the morning followed by a 1k in the evening is a bit much.

"Yeah..."

"You're stressing about something. Is it what was bothering you on Sunday?"

"No."

Now he's starting to look worried, "Am I allowed to know?"

"Maybe."

He now looks amused, "Maybe? Normally I get a 'yeah' or a 'nah'. This is new territory."

He throws his arm around me and brings me to the kitchen, "Issac love we need pancakes."

"How come?" He looks at me also worried. I have only went on a few extra runs. I don't think that means we need pancakes but who am I to complain?

"I got a 'maybe'."

"And what does a 'maybe' mean?"

"Absolutely no clue but it's a good excuse to get pancakes." Appears dad and I are on the same page.

Issac ruffles my hair, kisses dad on the forehead then begins making the pancakes. We sit in silence until he's ready to pour the batter into the pan.

"Are we allowed to know if the thing is bad or really bad?" Issac questions.

"Neither." I respond.

Dad gives me a look, "If you're worrying like this it should be a bad thing right?"

"Or too good to mess up." I say.

Issac puts a plate of pancakes in front of us, "Well you can explain over pancakes."

We begin eating and I ponder what I'm going to say. I want advice though I feel slightly embarrassed asking. I know I won't get made fun of, my parents are too love struck to be able to make any jabs at me without me being able to make fun of them.

"Uh..." Their attention turns to me, "How did you two meet?"

"When we were five and put in the same class." Ok that didn't hint it to them.

"No um... how did you to know?"

Dad looks at me as if I'm speaking a different language, "What?"

To my joy however Issac gets it, "Congratulations."

"Why are you congratulating him?"

"He's growing up Ezra."

Realisation dawns on his face, "You have a date!"

"...Yeah."

Issac begins to clear the table, "Girl or guy?"

"Guy."

Dad joins the questioning, "And it's your first ever date."

"Yeah."

Issac and dad smile. Issac nods at dad, I'm assuming he's taking the lead on this one then, "After your mother passed I was depressed for a few years. Issac helped me raise you but we really only  realised that we fell in love along the way when you were about five. In the beginning I was scared. I knew for years I was bi like yourself but I wasn't in an area where I would be accepted so I never told anyone. Not even Issac."

I look at my dad shocked, "Really? You two always seemed so sure of yourselves. And you two knew each other since you were kids. How did you not know?"

Dad holds Issac's hand, "One day when I came home from work I was reading to you. Issac was there. And then you asked 'Why is it a prince and princess?'"

Issac takes over, "We didn't know what you meant and tried to explain that the prince saved the princess."

"We didn't expect you to ask if we could read a story with two princes or two princesses in it next." Dad laughed as he continued on, "As I put you to bed that night Issac and I spoke for a long while admitting to each other we weren't straight."

"We then admitted that we liked each other." Issac concluded.

I laugh, "Seems like an odd thing to ask."

"You got your oddness from Ezra."

"Hey!" Dad shouted.

We all begin to laugh and I finally get the courage to ask, "What do I do?"

"Simple. It's what you always tell Camila: Anyone would be lucky to have you, you just need to wait for someone who treats you how you deserve to be. So you let him treat you how you deserve to be treated." Dad responds.

"Wait how do you know I tell her that?" I ask suspiciously.

Issac answers, "Your dad accidentally overheard it one night and boasted about how wise you were."

"Cool." I say, how else was I supposed to respond to that?

With that I realise that I need to go to school so I get ready and head out feeling much better than I had all week.

I can't stand romance movies. Too many clichés. Like really, why do people like them? It's not as if they ever change. After all, the guy always gets the girl no matter who's hurt in the process. Normally I make it my mission to either stay away from romantic movie lovers or covert them. Until I met my best friend that is.
