Lyn got her bags packed up. She made a little checklist in her mind. " Water. Check" she said, " extra bobby pins. Check. Point shoes. Check". She hesitated at point shoes. " Mom?" she called out. " Yes?" her mother replied. " Didn't you want to give me some point shoes?" Lyn asked. " Oh, yes!". Her mother came out, with the prettiest lavender point shoes Lyn had ever seen. " Take good care of them," said her Mom. " I will" Lyn replied.
" I'm ready!" she announced. " Good. I'll be driving you," Kaylee told her. They walked outside and got into the car. " I'm so excited!" Lyn said. " Cool" was all Kaylee replied. When they arrived, Lyn popped out of the car and said bye to Kaylee. She walked into the audition room and saw almost her entire class there.
" Great!" said Mr. Duke, the man who holds auditions every year for The Nutcracker. " Lyn's here. We can now start".
Each kid auditioned. They spun in the air, like little butterflies. When it was Lyn's turn, Mr. Duke said, " you may begin". She started gracefully, swaying her arms side-to-side. Then moved on to the bigger moves. She moved so gracefully, Mr. Duke saw her as a swan, for a second. Then it was time for the pirouttes.
She started. One. Two. Three. Three pirouttes. Then four. Then Five. And Six. And Seven. She was almost done. Then Eight. And Nine. Then Ten. And guess what? She couldn't seem to stop.
She was going and going and going, doing more and more. Mr. Duke looked amazed. " STOP!" he shouted. Lyn felt herself stop. Uh-oh, she thought, this isn't good. " You... you..." Mr. Duke said. Lyn held her breath. " Are The Sugarplum Fairy!". Lyn couldn't believe it! Everyone clapped and cheered. Lyn didn't even think about boys!
" Congrats!" Luna said. " UGH!" Leia said. "The first rehearsal is in one week!" Mr. Duke told her.
Lyn Katherine wants to audition for The Sugarplum Fairy in the Nutcracker. She knows, by playing this role, she must master ten pirouettes in a row! She knows that's the hardest part. But when she gets her great-great grandmother's old ballet shoes, she does much more than ten.
