A Cliché Year

Chapter 9

Chapter 9

May 07, 2021

Saturday morning arrives and it is the first time all week that I've woken up later than five in the morning. Considering that it's the day of the date it's a little bit surprising but ever since the conversation with dad and Issac yesterday I've felt a lot better. Checking my phone I realise that it's eleven, Noah picks me up at twelve... Crap.

I quickly get up and head down the stairs. I talk to dad as I'm getting breakfast, Issac's at his job at the gym.

Heading back to my room I put on a pair of ripped skinny jeans and a dark green turtleneck. Yes I'm aware it matches my hair. Going to the bathroom mirror I put my hair into a bun as I notice the brown roots are starting to show. I need to dye it soon, I fancy a change after all. Checking the time I notice I still have ten minutes so I get my phone and some money before heading to the living room to wait. I slouch in a bean bag until dad comes in and scolds me for potentially wrinkling my clothes. They were fine.

A car horn suddenly honks and I see Noah, I didn't know he had a car. After explaining to my dad why he couldn't go out and meet Noah I finally got into the car.

"Hey, I've been waiting for this all week." He greets.

I smile at him as he starts the car, "Same."

As we drive away from our town and begin heading into the countryside I begin to get curious, "Where are we going?"

He brings my hand onto the gear stick and puts his hand on top, "It's a surprise."

"I don't like surprises."

"You will like this one."

I sigh annoyed, "Fine but I want to have my choice of music."

He smirks, "Go for it."

Getting out my phone I put on Guns and Roses. Noah smiles apparently happy with my song choice. But now it's time for the real test.

"How annoyed would you be if I began singing badly along with the songs?" I question.

He laughs, "I'd join you as I do the exact same thing."

We sing along - terribly - as we head to the secret location. Considering we aren't even going near our closest city I suppose we aren't bowling or going to the cinema. As previously stated I hate surprises, I like to be prepared. Suddenly we turn to the right down a long narrow road and Noah then parks the car.

"This isn't where I die is it?" I joke, slightly mystified with this odd 'date location'.

He laughs, "Nope, but we still aren't there yet."

"What?"

He comes over and opens my door allowing me to get out before getting a bag and locking the car.

"What's in the bag." I ask.

He holds my hand and begins to lead me along the narrow road, "You'll find out."

We turn let down a narrower path, no wonder we had to get out of the car. When we get to the end of the path and into the clearing my jaw drops.

Trees surround the paradise in front of us while allowing the sun to shine brightly through. It shines onto the river showing us its clear waters. I then hear a small waterfall which was on up the river. The fresh green grass looks so inviting that I fall into it pulling Noah on top of me.

As he laughs I whisper, "No clue how you found this spot though it's beautiful."

He sits up a little looking at me, "I thought you would appreciate it, we still need to set up the picnic."

"The bag?"

"Yup."

I laugh, "I pulled you down, I probably ruined it."

"Nope, I set it down on the ground as soon as we got here." He chuckles and kisses my cheek. I blush and pull him back down to hold him.

"We can wait for a bit." I begin to stroke his hair gently.

He purrs slightly. Cute, "If you keep doing that then yes we can."

Continuing to lay there in the luscious green grass we lay there talking about trivial things from our favourite bands to our favourite foods. I now understand why people love dating, if I knew this is what it involved then I would've done it sooner.

We eventually decide to actually eat. We set up the blanket and the food, at least Noah did, I just admired his muscles while he did so. He did buy the sandwiches however I learnt that he made the cupcakes.

"Where did you learn too bake?"

"My uncle or as you know him Mr Bowman makes me bake with him once a week." He responds.

Ok I know I figured out they were related but I wasn't prepared to hear that the man most of the track team feared actually baked, "Wait really?"

"Yea, it was originally an anger management thing though he eventually began to enjoy it. He used it as a way to get to know me when I first moved in with him."

"Ah so you didn't always live with him then?" I question but he looks slightly uncomfortable, "Sorry I'm assuming that's not exactly a first date conversation. I can be blunt so just tell me if I overstep." Damn and I was doing so well at this 'date' thing.

He smiles gently and hands me another cupcake, "Sorry I'll tell you eventually, just not something I've not completely gotten over."

I kiss his cheek and take the cupcake, his blush is so cute, "No pressure to tell me anything. We can go slow."

Finishing the last of the food I begin to pack up until Noah pulls me back in between his legs folding his arms around me. This is nice. Different but nice, "Nope, we're sitting here for awhile."

Then we look at each other but this time it felt different. I could see in his eyes how much he seems to care for me, I wonder if he can see the same in my eyes. Cause I can definitely feel it. Almost as if magnetised we start leaning in towards each other. As our lips touch gently I understand why romance movies make such a big deal out of the first kiss. It was only small and lasted a few seconds at most but it was magical. So magical that we looked each other in the eyes blushing and did it again, and again, and again. You get the idea. It was innocent and simple but it was perfect.

When we stop we smile at each other and he says, "You are amazing."

I reply, "So are you."

We go back to joking and getting to know each other more before he drives me home. As I'm about to get out of the car I say, "Thank you for today."

He gently grabs my chin and gently kisses me one more time, "I should be thanking you."

I smile, still slightly on cloud nine and say, "Bye."

"Bye." He responds. As I get out of the car he waits until I get inside before driving away.

                                                                                ***

Entering the house I was planning to go to my room but Issac summons me to the living room to sit with him and dad.

"How did it go?" Issac asked calmly.

Before I could answer dad jumped in, "How was it? What does he look like? When can we meet him?"

I laugh, "It went well, he looks attractive obviously and I don't know when? When we both are ready I suppose?"

Issac smiles gently, "I'm glad it went well. Where did you go?"

"This cute river place."

Dad replies, "Aww. That's adorable."

I grin, "Yes it was. I'm going to my room."

"Alright, I'll call you when dinner's ready." Issac says.

Heading up to my room I fall onto my bed and look up at the ceiling. As I think about the date I can feel a faint blush painting my cheeks. I plug in my earphones, close my eyes and listen to some of the songs we listened to in the car. I was so nervous before but now I don't even understand why. Noah is an amazing person and I don't care if a week is too short a time to fall for someone. I already have.

A ringing brings me out of my thoughts, looking at the screen I see that it's Camila. Didn't she tell me that she wouldn't speak to me until I apologised? I decide to answer the phone anyways.

"Hello, Camila? Didn't you say, and I quote, 'you can come talk to me when you're ready to be more reasonable'?"

"Hey Raven. I'm just surprised you haven't came to me yet."

"Well I'm not being unreasonable. That's why. In fact I believe you are."

She scoffs on the other line, "Alright then: Tell me how I'm being unreasonable."

Now before when she disrespected me I didn't know what to do. She had been my only friend for a few years, of course I didn't want to hurt her. But now? I've found more friends and if she thinks she can act this way to her only friend of the past few years she's got another thing coming.

"Where to begin? Hmm what about that time you ignored me at the party? Or the time you made me do the chemistry experiment by myself? There was also the time where you went to sit at the circle table, if I didn't have my other friends I would've been alone. And how about this new attitude you have seem to have adopted, huh? Talking to your friend - your only friend- of the last two years this way? What exactly did I do to deserve it? You've changed since that date with Liam, whether you realise it or not. Anything you'd like to say?"

"I..... I-"

"Camila, you can come talk to me when you're ready to be more reasonable." I say and end the phone call. Now that I've finally shown that I won't take any disrespect from anyone decide to go back to listening to my music. As I do so I notice that I got a text form Elias asking if I want to celebrate his birthday. It's a bit early isn't it? I send a 'sure when is it' to Elias and get another reply within five seconds. Apparently Adrian decided that my advice meant plan Elias' birthday which of course made the short adorable freshman too excited. I smile, they are adorable.

"Raven! Dinner!" Never mind. Dinner's ready apparently.

Heading down the stairs I sit across from dad while Issac serves dinner.

"Thinking about your date up there?" Dad teases.

I nod, "And telling Camila off."

"And do what? Don't tell me because you have a date you think you're better than her!"

I sigh, "Considering she also has someone that logic doesn't make sense. Anyways it's the other way around." I then explain the events of the last week or so as we eat dinner.

Issac hums, "That doesn't sound like her."

"That's what I thought."

Dad sighs. That doesn't happen often, "Sorry kid, shouldn't have assumed things."

"It's fine, don't worry." I smile.

Issac chimes in, "I'm glad you stood up for yourself."

"That's what you taught me to do."

"Exactly. Now go on up and relax. Lillian's party is tomorrow. We will have to plan your birthday next." He orders.

"Night." I say, they say the same and I head upstairs.

I can't stand romance movies. Too many clichés. Like really, why do people like them? It's not as if they ever change. After all, the guy always gets the girl no matter who's hurt in the process. Normally I make it my mission to either stay away from romantic movie lovers or covert them. Until I met my best friend that is.
