I walked out onto my balcony and looked out on the buildings. The glowing lights from them blocked out the night sky, hiding the beautiful stars.
Hundreds of years passed since I formed and made my first gems. They had developed technology and advanced quickly. They built kindergartens to make gems and no longer needed me to do it. I wasn’t needed for many things now.
Of course, that’s what I wanted. Not to be relied on for everything. But now I feel as if I’m just a figurehead. No one wanted to bother me with anything since “I was too important” and “We can’t risk something happening to you.” Times have certainly changed.
“Uh...My Diamond?” A soft voice asked from behind me.
I turned and saw a pink coloured moissanite standing in the doorway. I hadn’t heard the door open or heard her come in.
Moissanite was a tall gem, one of the tallest, only comparable to myself and other moissanites. I had created them to stand in for me in meetings I couldn’t attend because of other duties.
They did most of my work now and acted as my assistants. Mainly the pink one standing in my room.
“Yes, Moissanite?” I smiled at her and walked over to her.
“Oh. I just came to check in on you. You’ve been in your room all day. Is everything alright?” Moissanite asked, tilting her head slightly.
I waved my hand, dismissing her question. “I’m fine. I’ve just been thinking.”
“About...what, My Diamond?” She asked.
“Well...I’m not doing anything. And it seems like I’m not needed anymore. So I thought about leaving-”
“WHAT?!” Moissanite looked at me with pure shock. It was like I said something crazy that made no sense.
I smiled at her. “Hear me out. I was thinking about leaving and making a new colony. Starting over.”
“There’s no need to do that. We have gems going out and colonizing planets and expanding your empire. You don’t need to do anything, My Diamond.” Moissanite said, a pleading look in her eyes that begged me to say I would stay. “We need a diamond to lead us.”
I shook my head and looked out onto the balcony, looking at the glowing city outside my palace. They did all of this on their own. “You don’t need a diamond. And you don’t need me anymore. You and the other moissanites can handle everything. I just...want to feel needed. And do things. Get my hands dirty. I hate sitting and watching life go by me.”
Moissanite stared at me with a concerned look. I could tell she did not approve of this want of mine. I knew it would be a hard concept for my gems to understand. They all had a place in the system they had built up. I no longer had a place in the system and I longed for the old days.
“My Diamond,” Moissanite said softly. “We do need you. You are the only diamond here. Gems need a diamond to follow.”
“Then I shall make you one. But my mind is made up, Moissanite. Now, can you go get me some dirt?” I asked her.
She put her hands up into a diamond shape, saluting me. “Yes, My Diamond.” She said then quickly left.
Could I make a diamond? Was that possible? I had never made one and all I knew, I was the only one who existed. The star had given me powers to create more gems, so it could possible.
It wasn’t long until Moissanite had returned with a jar of dirt. The only dirt left on this planet was put into jars, since I needed them to make gems but it wasn’t needed for anything else.
Moissanite took the lid off and I held out my hand. She poured the dirt onto my hand then stepped back. I wrapped my hand around the dirt and squeezed it. I felt the dirt go from soft to hard and cold.
I opened my hand and looked at a clear gem. A diamond. “Beau Sancy.” I said softly, naming the gem.
Moissanite looked at the gem. “Is that a diamond?”
“Yes.” I said and smiled. “I will stay until they are ready then I’ll go.”
Moissanite relaxed and smiled. “I’m glad to hear that.”
I smiled at her and nodded. I walked over to the table in my room and set the diamond onto a pillow. It could be awhile until they formed.
A spark of nervousness started in me.
