A Cliché Year

Chapter 10

Chapter 10

May 08, 2021

Going to school on Monday I was filled with confidence. I had went through a hard week but the weekend more than made up for it. From the amazing first date to Lillian's party. Heading into the building I go to my locker where a figure seems to be standing.

Unfortunately it wasn't Noah like I was hoping. It was Samuel. He seems to be glaring at the world and hasn't noticed my presence. I cough, "Any reason you're standing at my locker?"

He looks up surprised then gives me a creepy smile. Ok, maybe I'm biased but either way I'm not comfortable, "Hi... We haven't spoken in awhile."

"No we haven't, but when I need to get my books and head to class isn't necessarily the best time. Also, we never speak anyways."

"Uh yeah, I suppose not." He looks down awkwardly, "I was meant to tell you that you need to go help prom set up."

"Oh?"

"Yea." He now looks happier for some reason.

"Would you mind letting me get my books?"

He looks up at me, "But I need to tell you about the meeting."

Suddenly arms wrap around my waist from behind, "Then why don't you move to the side and tell him while he gets his books?"

The person kisses my cheek, "Hi."

I turn around and smile, "Hey Noah."

I suddenly feel eyes burning holes in the back of my head, so I turn back to Samuel. He quickly switches from angry back to shy. Not fast enough though.

"Can I get to my books now please?" I ask politely. I will be late at this rate.

"S-Sure!" He moves and I get my stuff while he tells me about this meeting thing, "You need to go at lunch. You're the only guy though."

"Wait then why am I going?" I ask, I don't want my lunchtime ruined.

"The principal wanted you to go incase the girls had a fight like last year."

Oh yes. I don't know if it has been forgotten by those in it but this school is cliché central. So it's no surprise that everyone gets competitive when becoming the prom queen. Last years fight was caused when the vote for prom theme was a tie. Apparently this had never happened before, considering the committee was always an even number I don't know how it was the first tie. Who knew two girls would get into a scrap over 'enchanted kingdom' and 'under the sea'. They seem a bit generic to me, I don't really care anyways though.

I sigh then turn to Noah, "Ok then. Looks like you're being left alone with the freshman crew."

"Ah, leaving me are we?" He asks pretending to be sad. His smirk betrays him though.

"Unfortunately."

He whispers in my ear, "Looks like you're gonna have to meet up with me this weekend to make up for it."

I smile, "Of course."

The bell then decides to go off. Noah kisses me on the cheek then walks off to his class. I happily close my locker and go to walk to class until a hand tugs on my jumper, "Are you two dating?"

I forgot Samuel was there. Now I feel embarrassed knowing he saw all that. I remove his hand from my jumper and say, "Uh no but I'm hoping we will." I can't stop myself from smiling when talking about Noah. I have officially fallen. Samuel now looks dejected. I don't know what to do so I say bye and walk quickly to class.

                                                                                       ***

Walking into the English classroom I notice that I'm the first one here. I sit at the back, put my feet on the table and put in my earphones. As time goes on I begin to hear people entering, then my feet are shoved off the table.

I open my eyes to be greeted with the red face of our very own queen bee, "Why are you here?" She slams her hands on the table.

"To keep you all from fighting apparently."

She flicks her blonde hair and scoffs, "Of course it had to be you."

I sigh and look at her, "I don't want to be here either Zoey. I won't say anything unless asked. Anything to get out of here."

"At least someone is willing to cooperate today." She says shooting me a small thankful smile. Wait what? Am I imagining things? The cheerleader seems to notice my shock and when I look into her grey eyes all I see is shame? Did I miss some character development here? Uh..... Never mind my life is not a movie.

Thankfully she walks to the front of the room and starts the meeting, "Hello all prom queen candidates..... and our special guest Raven. We need a theme and as I'm already speaking I'll start the discussion: 'Enchanted Forest'."

Someone chuckles, I look over and notice that it's Camila, "Too cliché. We need something like: 'Hollywood'."

"Isn't that also cliche?" Zoey asks while glaring at Camila, "Any other ideas before we vote?"

Everyone looks too scared to speak up. I sigh, "Looks like it's time for you all to vote."

"Didn't you say you were gonna stay quiet unless spoken to?" She asks jokingly.

"I'm the voice of the people."

She laughs, "You probably couldn't name the other four girls in the room."

I smirk, "Oh really? Well there's Olivia, Emma, Amelia and Sophie."

She actually looks impressed. Wow, "Well done. Now that you've shown you're the 'voice of the people' we may as well vote."

As the girls go up and vote Zoey comes over beside me and sits down, "How did you know all of their names? I thought you were a pretty quiet person?"

I smile, "I'm quite observant for a start. Also, I'm openly bi so I get a surprising amount of people asking for my advice." It's odd but apparently as I've figured myself out people seem to believe that I can help them. It used to happen pretty often in first year but not as much now. The school is now a safe place for people to come out so they don't really need to. I still do get the odd nervous or confused person come to me though.

"Ah I didn't know people went to you."

"Yup. I still don't get why."

She smiles wistfully, "I think I do."

I look at her confused, "Huh?"

"Looks like the vote is done. I'd better go. Bye Raven."

"Bye."

As she walks up to the podium I can't help but see her in a different light. Her once permanent smirk and confident gaze has now turned into a soft, almost fake smile and a soft gaze. Everything about her has been transformed. Her blonde hair which used to be in a permanent pony tail now cascades down her shoulders. Her once bold makeup is now natural, her cheerleading uniform switched to a cami dress. She's somehow went from the schools demon to the schools angel and I really want to know why. I also really want to know why I didn't notice any of this earlier.

"Alright then. 'Hollywood' got two votes while 'enchanted forest' got four meaning that the prom theme for this year will be 'enchanted forest'."

I stand and stretch, thank goodness. I don't wanna have to play peace maker. Of course as I notice the angered look on Camila's face I know that I've just jinxed us all.

"What!" She shouts anger lacing her voice. What is happening to her? Maybe she should try baking, it apparently helped Mr Bowman. However I know better than to actually suggest it to her.

To my surprise Zoey says, "The final decision has been made. Meeting adjourned." She isn't retaliating? Has the most cliché high school of the century just lost its cliché popular cheerleader?

As there is still another thirty minutes of lunch left I head to our lunch table while thinking over the events which had just transpired. I sit down and say hi to everyone before explaining what happened.

"Raven we need to go now." Elias says in a serious voice.

I look at him confused, "What?"

"Don't tell me those stories I heard about you giving lgbtq+ people was false."

I sigh, "No, it's all true but what does that have to do with anything?"

"Everything. I can notice it a mile off." He says almost angrily. Adrian silently takes his hand.

"Ok, from my experience most people come to me when they're ready and not a second before but I'm assuming you think differently?" He nods, "Alright. I don't normally do this but let's go find her."

"Yay!" Elias shouts as I kiss Noah on the cheek.

"Bye all." I say. The others say bye while Noah gives me a quick hug.

As Elias and I walk down the corridor I dread how long this search is gonna take. Well I do until we overhear two seniors talking about how the queen bee ran outside. Elias and I look at each other and then begin running.

We walk past the bleachers until I hear something. I gently pull on Elias' denim jacket to signal him to stop. Then I hear it again. It's snuffling. We then go behind the bleachers and the sight in front of me surprises me. The once regal queen bee is now having a break down. Elias looks at me with a sad look in his eyes pleading me to do something. He's never spoken to her so that's understandable, but it's not as if I believe she would poor her heart out to me either. So I do the one think I know how to do. I sit beside her and pull her into my side. She freezes for a moment looking at me before crying even more than before holding me in a vice grip. I hold her and rub small circles on her lower back.

A few minutes later she calms down and looks up at me, "How did you know I was here?" She questions before looking at Elias, "And who are you?"

"That's Elias, my pupil. And we're here cause you're the person he'll help first."

He looks at me, "Wait what?"

"Oh yeah, I decided that I'm now gonna train you to continue my role when I leave here." I respond. After all, I only have two more years here and I believe he can do it.

Zoey laughs, "Alright then young pupil, help me."

"Well what happened? Is it anything we can help with." He asks.

"I like someone." She says.

I join the conversation, "Someone we know?"

"Yes, very well." She answers.

I smile, "I believe you only accepted it recently?"

"Yeah..."

"How can you even guess that?" Elias asks shocked.

I smile and wink, "Trick of the trade."

He laughs and then goes back to Zoey, "Well there's no pressure to tell us who though I'll give you our numbers incase you ever want to talk."

"About anything, serious or not." I add on.

She smiles while adding our numbers to her phone, "Thank you both."

"No problem." Elias and I somehow say at the same time. The three of us look at each other and laugh as if we've been friends for years.

She stands and stretches, "Alright then I'd better go. Bye guys."

"Bye Zoey!"

"Bye."

Elias and I begin walking to the canteen again, of course the bell decides to go when I haven't even had lunch yet.

Elias pulls gently on my jumper.

"Hmm?"

"Were you serious about teaching me?"

"Yup." I respond.

He smiles, "Thanks for trusting me. Bye Raven!"

"Bye young padawan." I say and he laughs before we both head to our classes.

I can't stand romance movies. Too many clichés. Like really, why do people like them? It's not as if they ever change. After all, the guy always gets the girl no matter who's hurt in the process. Normally I make it my mission to either stay away from romantic movie lovers or covert them. Until I met my best friend that is.
