A Cliché Year

Chapter 12

Chapter 12

May 12, 2021

The next two months go amazingly. Ryan and Levi are now dating, Elias and Adrian are still adorable and to top it off I now have a boyfriend. The seven of us are closer than ever, we even went to Adrian's house last week. Meeting his family was interesting to say the least. Adrian is probably the quietest person I've ever met yet somehow his family is the loudest I've ever met. That's saying something considering that other than Adrian there's three of them. And Elias of course who lives with them. The group noticed that Gabriel was the only single one out of us so we made a pact that we would find him someone by the end of the year.

At this moment in time I'm deciding what top I should wear to Elias' birthday party. Considering my lift comes in like five minutes I'm beginning to think that writing my book rather than actually getting ready was a bad idea. On one hand I could wear my cream turtleneck jumper, which fits me just right and looks amazing on me. Or I could wear my mustard yellow hoodie which is very comfortable as its a size or two too big.

Suddenly I hear a car horn. In a panic I throw on the turtleneck and rush out of the house while grabbing my present. Jumping into the car I turn to the others, "Hey guys."

Levi laughs while Noah starts the car, "Hey Raven."

"Hey." Ryan says.

Noah winks and says, "Hey beautiful."

"I know you're my boyfriend though that will never stop being cringy."

"And yet you smile every time."

The four of us end up joking and laughing until we reach Adrian and Elias' house. Getting out of the car Noah puts his arm around my waist before walking to the back garden.

The one thing I love most about Adrian's house is how big the garden is. The trees surrounding the garden hold party banners. Beneath the banners there's a long wooden table with many treats. Tray bakes, cupcakes and of course a large cake in the middle. Over to the bottom left corner of the garden there's a swing tied to one of the trees. There also happens to be around five or so children on it. Elias wasn't kidding when he said a lot of people were invited. I'm surprised we all fit out here.

"Raven, Ryan!" Elias shouts before jumping on us both in a hug.

We stumble and fall on the ground while Levi and Noah laugh, "How come Noah and I don't get that type of welcome?"

"Because we're special." Ryan replies while smirking at Levi.

I chuckle, "Happy birthday."

"Thanks." Elias says as we get up.

"We left our gifts for you on the way in." Noah told him.

Elias hugged us all again before a middle aged woman with caramel skin called him over. She looks a bit like Adrian so I'm assuming she's a relative. Noah takes my hand and pulls me towards Gabriel.

"Zoning out are we?" He smirks.

I laugh, "Sorry, I'm back."

"Hey guys." Gabriel says as we make our way over to him.

Noah smiles and pats him on the shoulder, "Hey Gabriel, why are you over here standing by yourself?"

He smiles softly, "Ah big groups like this aren't in my comfort zone. I'd rather stand away and watch it happen in front of me."

"Same." I agree.

"Hence why I'm pulling him around." Noah swings our interlocked hands, "And why we're gonna stay with you."

"If you want to that's fine. How are you two doing?"

I smile at him, "Yea we're doing good. Interested in anyone yet?" I question. This man deserves to have someone, he's an angel.

"Yes." Well that was unexpected. Up until now we only got told 'no'.

Noah looks more shocked than me, "Wait what!"

He laughs, "Surprised?"

"Very!"

I sigh, "Sorry about him. Anyways are we allowed to know anything? Like who it is or who else knows?"

"Uh..." Poor guy looks uncomfortable.

I pat him on the arm gently, "You don't need to answer, just know if you need our advice or anything we're here."

"Thanks Raven, also would you two mind keeping this between us three. No one else knows."

"Sure." Noah says and I just nod.

Adrian's older brother comes over, he looks very similar to Adrian as he is only slightly taller and has the same eyes but his hair unlike Adrians is long. Dreadlocks to be precise. When I met him I was with Noah who thought that they were the same person. The brothers had fun trying to explain to Noah that Adrian didn't suddenly get dreadlocks overnight.

"Hey guys."

Gabriel straightens up, "Hello Mason."

"Hey man." Noah says and once again I just nod. Socialising is hard, sue me.

Mason laughs, "As vocal as ever Raven."

"You know it." I respond.

"Damn, you and Ryan really are the same person."

The party continues with us catching up with Adrian's parents and meeting other family members. Eventually there's only the five freshman, Noah, myself and Adrian's parents and brother. While Adrian's mum makes us tea and coffee we head into the sitting room where I proceed to collapse on top of Noah.

"You must be tired." Noah jokes as he wraps his arms around me tightly.

I wrap my arms around him, "I socialised for like four hours."

Levi, Elias, Adrian and Mason laugh while Ryan looks at me, "Fair point." He then collapses onto Levi. That just makes us all laugh even more.

"Does Ryan have a twin that I didn't know about?" Mrs Wilson jokes while handing us all our drinks. We thank her before she leaves.

As Elias begins thanking us all for coming I excuse myself to go to the bathroom. In reality I just noticed that Elias hadn't opened his presents yet and decided to go get them. I think Gabriel and Ryan realised what I was thinking as I find them behind me a few seconds later.

"Have we got them all?" Gabriel asks.

"Think so." I reply.

Walking back into the room Gabriel decides to take the lead, "You don't think we're going to leave without seeing you open your presents do you?"

Elias laughs as we set the gifts in front of him. He decides to open all the other gifts before getting to ours. Myself, Noah, Levi, Ryan and Gabriel decided to put our money together to give Elias a £100 gift voucher to the makeup store I met him in with Camila.

Levi says, "We figured that this would be a better gift than us all buying stuff separately." Elias runs at us all and hugs us. Levi manages to fall over as he wasn't prepared. We all laugh as Ryan and Adrian help them up.

I notice Adrian fidgeting, he looks over at me and I wink. Adrian had organised the party and did an amazing job at it but he still didn't believe it was enough. A month or so ago Adrian and I met up at the library to think of ideas. After about three hours of brainstorming he figured out what he would get, he ran out of the library before telling me so I'm quite curious.

He gives me a small smile and says, "Elias."

"Hmm?"

Adrian silently gives him the present. Elias opens it and he starts crying. Poor Adrian looks so panicked.

"If you don't like it you don't have to keep it."

Elias looks at him and whacks his shoulder, "Of course I love it you idiot!" He then carefully sets down the present and kisses Adrian.

While they do that I decide to look at the present. Looks like an ordinary sketchbook to me.

"Can we look?" Noah asks.

Elias while hugging Adrian says, "Sure."

Noah sets it on his lap as we begin to flick through the pages. The first page documents how the two met and includes photos of them at ten years old, there's also a hand drawn picture of one of the photos. The entire book follows their friendship and eventually their relationship. As we finish looking I hand it over to Gabriel.

"I wondered what those drawings were for." Gabriel muttered.

I look over to him, "Did you draw them?"

"Yea, I didn't know about the book though. Adrian just asked me to draw a few of the photos."

"I didn't know you could draw. They look so realistic. Draw me next!" Mason exclaimed.

Gabriel looks away, "Uh... I only told Adrian.... And if you really want I can."

Afterwards we decide to stick on a movie, Elias chose an anime movie but we spent the entire time talking rather than actually watching it. Eventually I notice Noah yawning.

"You tired? We can go if you want."

He kisses my forehead, "Sorry, I didn't sleep much last night."

"It's ok." I reassure him.

"Uh guys? I think we should get going, don't want our driver falling asleep behind the wheel." I joke.

He lifts me up, "Excuse me sir?"

We laugh and say goodbye to the others. Noah offers Levi and Ryan a lift but Mason says he'll bring them home with Gabriel.

                                                                               ***

As I'm heading to running club I get the instinctive feeling that somethings wrong. So that I don't have to face whatever it is I stop.

Levi turns back to me when he realises I'm no longer beside him, "Any particular reason you're stopping?"

"Something bad is going to happen."

"And how do you know that?"

"Spider-sense."

Levi laughs, "Come on spider man, I bet it won't be too bad."

I sigh, "Well done Levi."

"Thank you, I'm good at making people feel better."

"... Well done Levi for jinxing us."

Walking onto the track field I notice everyone is standing in a circle. Levi and I rush over to see what the fuss is about.

Mr Bowman is introducing a new runner apparently. He's very tall, barely shorter than Adrian though. I'd have to guess around 6'1. He's quite muscular, probably as muscular as Adrian. I would've pinned them both as boxers rather than runners if I had to guess before meeting them. His dark blue eyes scan the crowd as Mr Bowman speaks, almost as if he's looking for something. He pushes a hand through his dirty blonde hair before going back to smiling at us.

"He has only just transferred with his twin sister so please be nice to him" Wait... haven't we done the whole 'transfer student cliché' thing already? I thought it was over with.

Then he waves at everyone and introduces himself, "Hi, I'm Atlas. It's nice to meet you all."

Mr Bowman then shouts, "Alright start warming up now!"

As Levi and I are about to go to the others I make eye contact with the new kid. If looks could kill I would be dead.

"What exactly did you do to him?" Levi asks shocked.

"Nothing, this is the first I've seen him." I then look to Levi, "Told you something bad would happen today."

I can't stand romance movies. Too many clichés. Like really, why do people like them? It's not as if they ever change. After all, the guy always gets the girl no matter who's hurt in the process. Normally I make it my mission to either stay away from romantic movie lovers or covert them. Until I met my best friend that is.
