Rigel, the Capital city of Via, is the largest urban settlement on this side of the Iugalba Mountains. It stretches from e Fragor Peak, which looms over the Royal Castle, and follows the course of the Hyacin River until it becomes a delta when it reaches Ocelivens Lake. The city is split into several districts depending on the closeness to the Royal Castle. The Lower, Mid, and Upper districts split the society of the city as harshly as the figurative separations between them. Originally it was the capital of the Imperial Colony in Centris, but after the fall of the Empire, it became an independent country. The city extends flanking a river that turns into a large canyon to the north. The river, called Hyacin, is also nicknamed “The Scar” as it cuts across the city. The many bridges over the river resemble suture over a wound, being the source of the river’s local nickname. Apart from the river, the city itself had many nicknames. The locals usually called it “The Capital”, the highborn tended to use “The Ancestral City” while many foreign merchants coined the term the “Azure City”.
All of them had obvious reasons of course. “The Capital” is self-explanatory, but it had two connotations, most people living in the city used it with pride, while the rest of the lowborn considered most people living in the city as arrogant and haughty, so they used the nickname with a negative tone. “The Ancestral City” is a bit more interesting to explain, as Rigel was the first city the Empire created in the continent of Centris after crossing the Spiked Sea separating this continent from the “Homeland”. One of the ancient and fabled ships that the Imperials used to fly over the Spiked Sea was used as the foundations for the Royal Castle that lies atop a cliff, overlooking the city, surrounded by two canyons created by the forking river. Finally the epithet of “Azure City” comes from the usage of Caelapis, a blue stone that tends to surround the veins of Cibus underground, used as building materials, most commonly to craft tiles for roofs, making the whole city look blue from any of the mountain paths that reach the city.
The Lower District, derisively known as “The Mudhole”, is situated around the Entem Coast (Roughly Eastern) of the Ocelivens Lake and crosses through by a delta formed by the Hyacin River. Most of the lower district is formed by residential buildings constructed over long wooden pillars, elevating the houses over the muddy and clay-laden coasts off the delta. Recently many Cibus refineries have been opened, throwing waste into the river, giving it a sick reddish-pink hue that gradually extends towards the lake. Most houses are made out of cheap wood obtained from a forest that surrounds the Cidens Coast of the lake (Western) People in the lower district tend to be workers in other businesses and rarely have enough Dies (The local coin) for anything but their bare necessities.
The Middle District, originally known as the Great Market and currently called “The Azure Rooftops” is the residence of the nascent middle class of the Kingdom. Merchants, trade workers, and other professionals grew alongside the economy of the Kingdom, expanding from the lower district and moving towards the once only mercantile district of the city. The Middle District is well known for its use of Blue Tiles made out of Caelapis, a stone usually found surrounding Cibus’ veins underground. Originally the district had many workshops that crafted the tiles, selling them to the nobility, but soon they had enough resources to use them themselves, and later they ended up being the sole local buyers, covering the whole district in blue. New construction techniques and advancements usually hit this district first, having some of the tallest buildings.
The Upper District, also known as “The Highborn Highlands” consists of mostly mansions for the different members of the court, ranging from the lowest rank of Merces Ensis to the higher Regio Dominus, who only use their mansions when the Council of Elders is called to deliberate 3 times a year, at the start of Viridis, Solis, and Auran (The Blossoming Season, the Sun Season and the Golden Season), as they usually live in the regions they govern, since their rank indicates the stewardship of one of the six provinces of Via. Certain important Highborn live only in the Castle, alongside the Royal Family. The Upper District has the least population and least population density, with magnificent mansions crafted by the Arcanist themselves using one of the Disciplines of Vis to activate Spell Formulas that shape the stone and other materials. The Lowborn require a permit to traverse or visit the Upper District.
The Royal Castle is the point of origin of the whole town, built around the wreck of an ancient ship from Imperial Times, it has a very peculiar combination of ancient ruins and new constructions, with the modern parts almost growing out from the support granted by the ancient ruin. The castle rests atop a steep cliff, split apart from the rest of the city as two rivers join down below into the Hyacin River. The only way to access the Castle is through an elaborate system of platforms connected through chains, working more or less like a Cibus powered Cableway. The Castle is known for its 7 towers, all increasing in height, arranged in a somewhat spiraling shape with the tallest tower, the “Imperial Spire” being dead center inside the fortifications. that use spires of ruins as support for the walls. The Imperial Spire is a mixture of sleek metal and polished stone with a massive stained glass window that climbs up to the top, where the throne room rests. Each of the other towers is interconnected through bridges and hallways, creating a veritable network that links the whole castle on several levels. Currently, there are some renovations being made, cleaning up debris from older iterations of the building and adding auxiliary buildings for the Scripti cables and Liquid Cibus reservoirs.
