Their new house was really nice. He finally moved all his stuff from the car to his new bedroom, so he started unpacking. The good thing about moving a lot was that, besides his art supplies, he only kept the essentials so the process of packing and unpacking was quite fast.
He wanted to get it over soon so he would take a walk with Cookie through the neighborhood. He knew that it would be better to stay at home for today and take a break since they just travelled there, but he saw so many trees and there was so much nature around his house that he couldn't help but get excited.
There was so much to explore! He loved this part about moving, there were always a lot of new things to discover. He threw all his clothes in his closet and moved to organize his desk, plugging his cell phone into its charger. In one week he would go back to college and he wanted to have all his things organized.
Feeling satisfied for the moment, he went out of the bedroom to notify his parents that he was going out. He found them in the kitchen, probably too exhausted to do anything for the rest of the day. They probably would have some delivery for dinner, not that it was a problem for him. He loved his mother's cooking and his father's baking, but he also really enjoyed trying new dishes from different restaurants.
After asking if they wanted something from the world outside and only receiving a "have fun" for an answer, he snapped his fingers calling for Cookie. She came running from the backyard, waiting for him at the backdoor. He trained her to not get inside the house with dirty paws and she was showing how she was such a good girl.
While waving goodbye to his parents, he got to Cookie's side and they went out on their walk. He decided it was better to not go too far, he was feeling a bit tired from the move besides he would have time to explore more during the week.
Trying to work out which path would end up being the more fun to take, he opted for the one that went in the direction of the woods. He seemed delighted by the way he couldn't find people walking on the streets at all. Probably because they were in a residential area and it was still on working hours.
They walked for some time. He kept looking everywhere, trying to assimilate as much as possible while walking. When they got to the border to the woods, Cookie stopped and fixed her vision somewhere far away. He looked in the same direction, trying to find what made her be so cautious and not finding it. Maybe she heard something.
He kept looking into nothing with her for some minutes, expecting something to show up. Now the absence of people was making him nervous. He inspected the area around them, the closest house being way too far for his growing fear.
It didn't even make sense being afraid of something that wasn't there, but he was getting cold feet. Feeling the goosebumps on his arms, he took three steps back in the direction they came, but Cookie kept in the same place.
Snapping his fingers and then clapping his hands, he tried to get her attention, but it was useless. Whatever she was sensing, it was way too dangerous for her to turn her back to it. And that made him even more afraid.
He trusted her instincts, but he didn't want to be there. Not when there wasn't a freaking soul in the streets. He tried to get her attention one more time, and the movement she made, eyes staring at something he couldn't see, and her paws slowly moving backwards, made his legs tremble.
His eyes now were huge, looking between his dog and whatever the hell was coming in their direction. He started to curse all his choices on that day. He should have stayed at home. He should have chosen the path to downtown, the city, or wherever the fuck he could find people.
Only he didn't, and now he was in a situation he couldn't understand. Following Cookie, he kept moving backwards while trying to keep his cool. The sweat accumulated on his forehead, gluing his hair to that place.
All it took was one misstep. One misstep and hell was on earth. On a normal day, falling on his ass would be the joke of the time and he would love to tell it to his dad, only to see the older man laughing. However, it wasn't supposed to happen today, not right now.
But it did and after that everything happened way too fast. A huge creature ran from the woods in his direction. His fight or flight instincts failing him, keeping him trembling on the floor. All that flying red, painting the floor like a grotesque picture.
His brain just stopped working and he stayed there, no actions done. He could only see the blood.
