Archer glided over to our bed with an unreadable expression. People say his face is hard to read, but I don't need to see facial expressions to know he's mad. Actually, I don't need to see him at all to know he's mad. I stupidly left my clothes from last night on the sink and he saw them, he knows that I went out last night.
"What were you thinking? Going out there by yourself?" He asked softly. He would know exactly what I was thinking if he used his useful gift. That's what the whole mind reading thing is for, right? reading minds.
"You know the rules, Robin. I shouldn't be waking up to an empty bed... I know what you did by the way, so you don't have to imagine up some crazy excuse... But you can't go out there without backup!" His anger was starting to poke through. His usually perfect face, had a crease between the eyebrows.
It's not like he would've let me go anyways...Even with backup... I'm not a knight like him, I'm just a peasant boy with no real value.
'I needed to protect those children... They're safe now... Living in a safe house for our generation of children. And backup did come!' I let him read my mind.
"Backup came at the end, you didn't leave with them. Just because this had a good enough outcome doesn't mean that it always will! What would've happened if they didn't show up, hm? You would've died, I can't lose you" There was no anger in his voice, only worry, and pain. "I can't lose you, Robin! We've already lost so much of our lives, so many people... I'll go insane if I lose you too." He croaked out.
'I made a mistake...' I told him. 'I broke the rules... I won't do it again, I'm promise.' I held out my pinky and waited for him to do the same.
"I love you ok?" He said as he wrapped his pinky around mine. "I have no doubt that you can protect yourself- AND others... But you're not a trained like we are. Humans know how to destroy every single one of us."
'I know. I'm forgetting my place.' I pulled my hand away from his touch.
"That's not what I mean."
'It's ok.' I cut in. 'I know. I should remember my place. I can't be a knight.'
There was silence for a while. Every second I could feel myself breaking, little by little. I'd never be a knight... I should know that by now. Weak body frame, not of noble status in the slightest. I just thought they'd be desperate by now so they'd take anyone they could.
Then Archers voice ripped me from my painful thoughts. "...How about I train you?"
I sat there, speechless. My thoughts were running everywhere, my eyes darted from one always to the other.
I felt a tug of energy coming from Archer. He was trying to get into my mind.
'What about the others? Will they like it if I'm there?'
"They have no time to waste discriminating. We need all the help we can get if we are going to keep the lives of our people safe. It shouldn't matter how you were raised, with the right amount of training we can turn anybody around."
Ok! Second chapter.
Just in case you didn’t know: Archer talks out loud. Robin’s thoughts can be read by Archer (Archers power is mind reading). This is how the two boys communicate.
I also wanted to add that Archer has LONG brown hair (like the Korean hwarang’s), most of the knights have hair like that.
I live it when readers (including myself) guess things right before it happens. They are not humans, I don't know where or what they came from, but they are their own kind.
Robin was raised as a peasant in the magical Opal Kingdom. He has jet-black hair like most of the peasant, but his eyes are pale and he lacks the ability to talk, this has resulted in him not having any friends (with Archer as an exception). He developed the powerful gift to detect the difference from each voice he hears. This has lead him to overhear terrible and frightening plans .
Archer was raised to be a skilled knight for the Opal Kingdom. He is tall with a solid build and dark brown hair. Archer was born with the ability to read peoples minds -a very useful power for a knight-. He developed a strong relationship with Robin after he realised Robin could communicate with him telepathically..
The people of Opal were forced to flee suddenly, after a human invasion on the kingdom. The king was slaughtered and many were taken hostage to be used for their power. Those who fled are hidden amongst the humans.
Robin has promised himself that he'll protect his people, and eventually (with the help of Archer) restore the kingdom to it's former glory.
