EPISODE ELEVEN:
Her words cut through me like a knife and stunned me into a complete standstill. All that was audible was the rhythmic drumming of my heartbeat in my ears. The crowd of flooding people seemed to have the same reaction and stood, dumbfounded, staring at the person who had yelled. I, myself, was not in the least bit surprised by who it was.
Zora was near the gate and was standing close enough to reach down and touch Jenny. Her chest was pumping in and out and her eyes were wild. She paused, taking in a deep breath as she gazed into the sea of fearful faces. A kid close to me, I think his name was Alfred or Al or something, had tears streaming down his red cheeks. My heart cracked a bit at his pain but I had to look away so that I didn’t begin to cry myself. I distracted my brain with Zora and her commanding aura.
“Everyone! Please you need to listen to me!” Her voice cracked, “Jenny… Jenny is- Jenny is dead but we aren’t. Please I don’t want anyone to get hurt so listen to me.” She begged the crowd, “I want to help but I need you to listen and not go charging off anymore. So many people have died, but no one else needs to if you just listen.” She had everyone’s attention now and I could see that behind her fear she was reveling in it. But now it was not the time and she knew it. “We need to think about this and come up with a plan. Everything is crazy right now so we should get some sleep and figure this out in the morning.” Everyone began to nod and utter words of agreement.
“Exactly,” Caspian began, yet again cutting Zora’s directions off, “We should elect a leader and figure out a plan. I’m happy to offer my services.” He bowed as if he was tipping a hat that he did not have.
I began to fume with anger and I took a step towards him. Andrew latched onto my shoulder in an attempt to hold me back but I threw him off. In a few long powerful strides I had made my way over to Caspian and I grabbed his collar. His eyes lit up with surprise as my fists closed around the top of his shirt holding him in place while I began to yell.
“You stay the h*ll away from Zora and her plans! You don’t know what the f**k your talking about!” I yelled into his face.
“Evie,” Zora said with a monotone voice, “Please calm down.”
The tight grip I had around Caspian loosened at her request. I glanced over my shoulder at her calm face and I began to calm down as if her control was seeping into me. I fully released Caspian and walked over to stand behind Zora. My arms were crossed in a threatening manner. Caspian looked appalled at my violence and sent a deadly glare at me.
A few people from Caspian’s group had surrounded him and it looked as if a fight was about to break out. Looking Caspian dead in the eyes, I dared him to make a move. My muscles twitched with anticipation of the upcoming threat. The crowd began to waver and people moved from one side to another backing the two feuding groups. One of Caspian’s lackeys took a threatening step forward and in return so did I along with some others, such as Andrew and a few peopleI didn’t recognise at a glance.
“Now, now. Let’s not get touchy.” Caspian said. “I don’t want a fight to break out.”
‘Cocky,’ I thought with irritation. I felt a snarl making its way onto my face. I felt a hesitant hand grip my arm just below my shoulder before I stepped out in front of Zora. It was Lorie. Her eyes were pleading with me to calm down and think before I did. The school had separated into two distinct groups, other than a few outliers, one backing Zora and the other backing Caspian. I was in utter disbelief at how far this had gotten. It was if I had surfaced from deep wate,r as I came to the realization that this wasn’t going to end well. It was like a switch, all of a sudden the anger and irritation left my body and I felt tired.
“You stay back,” It was Andrew, pointing a long accusing finger at Caspian.
“Don’t touch him!” Jacob, one of Caspian’s bodyguards said, slapping Andrew’s hand.
Shock flooded his face and soon after, anger followed. He raised his fist in a threatening fashion at the Junior. But before he could do anything Zora grabbed hold of his arm.
“No.” And that was it, he stopped.
“What are you doing, are you afraid?” Caspian taunted.
“Shut up,” I said.
“Evie, please, let me take care of this,” She whispered, “No, Caspian, I just know better.”
Her response shocked him into silence. He gritted his teeth and made a “Tsk '' noise directed towards Z. Her expression was like stone, calm and controlled. She was so different than just fifteen minutes ago when her emotions had full control of her and not the other way around. I was still worried but at the same time I was relieved, we needed a leader. ‘What would we do without her? What would I do without her?’ I grinned internally.
“Let’s go,” Caspian said with venom in his voice.
His group stalked away, with him at the head, walking towards building B. I watched as the group faded away, focusing on them with a hawk’s eye just to make sure they didn’t try anything. But, then again what would they do?

The sun was starting to set when Zora placed her hand on my shoulder. She had moved the group of people who sided with us into building A for the night. None of us wanted to go back to the gym after… what happened. I decided to take the first watch on the steps even though I was told repeatedly that it wasn’t necessary. The sun was dipping down across the horizon coloring the sky, a rosy peach.
The sun had fully set when Zora came to sit beside me on the front entrance steps. She patted me on the shoulder, gave me a smile, and sat down letting out a big huff of air. She glanced back at me, her head tilting back slightly while a breeze ran through her gold hair tossing it back and forth. She smiled again making my heart skip a beat and my cheeks flush with color.
“You know, you don’t need to do this. Right?” She asked, concern spreading on her face.
I sighed and stroked the back of my neck halfheartedly.
“Yes, I know. But… but after what happened today I just,” I let out another sigh and slouched significantly, “I need to do something.”
She moved closer to me and her thigh slid up against my own elevating my heart rate. Even her touch was enough to send my heart racing a mile a minute. I swallowed hard and forced myself to look at the fading sun instead of the angel beside me.
“I know. Today, in the gym, I was so powerless. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t help anyone. I felt so weak,” She said, falling over and resting her head on my shoulder.
I tensed up but after the initial shock of her touching me I melted into her touch. I wanted to grab her hand and kiss her forehead and tell her everything was going to be okay, but I couldn’t. However, for the time being this was enough. I smiled and willed myself to forget the horrors I witnessed just a few hours before. Sitting there I was content with forgetting about the past and watching the sunset with Zora.
