A Cliché Year

Chapter 18

Chapter 18

May 24, 2021

Early on Atlas takes the lead followed by two freshmen from a different school. I decide for now that middle of the pack will work the best.

The claps and cheers of the crowds when you're apart of the crowd sound deafening yet when you're running it sounds almost muffled by the wind blowing past you. The pattering of your feet. The sound of your heavy breathing. In the running club you're apart of the team until you race.

Then it's truly every person for themselves.

Laps one, two and three not much changes. Lap four the freshman look like they're getting tired. Lap five I take over one of them. Lap six I take over the other. Lap seven I slowly close the gap between myself and Atlas.

I then sprint like my life depends on it.

And then we both cross the finish line.

I go to the side and lie down to try and get my breath back, Atlas is surprisingly fast. It took a lot to catch up to him. I faintly notice him lying down beside me before seeing Mr Bowman come over.

"Well done boys. They couldn't tell who won between you so they're looking at the camera footage. Whichever way it turns out I couldn't be more proud of you both."

"Thanks Mr Bowman." We say before he shouts at the others to help us out.

Some sophomores go over to Atlas while Ryan comes over to me, "Well done." He says quietly as we head to the others.

As we sit down at the stands the announcers voice says, "With first and second being a 0.43 second difference we can now confirm that in the 1500m race the winner was Raven Winters."

A huge grin makes its way onto my face as Noah hugs me along with the freshman. They all congratulate me as I looks for dad and Issac in the crowd. I find them and dad jumps up and down while Issac gives me two thumbs up. I smile and allow myself to be pulled by my friends to the stands where we go to watch the next race.

The one person who isn't with us is Elias. For our team it's a tradition that each of the four people represents one of the years with the captain always being the senior runner. Elias, as he's one of the fastest freshman, got chosen to take part.

As the relay race starts everyones' minds are on there race right in front of us... Mine feels as if it's far away. It's only now that the race is over I have time to think about everything. Samuel's weird behaviour, Noah saving me, Noah and I being on good terms, winning the race-

Noahs hand slips in mine, his gentle smile pulls me in and his hazel eyes ground me. A lot has happened but I don't mind as it ended like this. My focus comes back just as the captain crosses the finish line in first place.

Soon after the track field is being prepared for the award ceremony. This is one of the few times I've been alone today. I wanted to see dad and Issac but they don't seem to be in the crowd of people getting food like I thought they would be. I begin to get bored until a certain blonde catches my attention.

"You just couldn't stay away from me for too long could you?"

She laughs, "Congratulations Raven, if anyone deserves that win it's you after the year you've had."

"Thanks Zoey." I say, "Who are you here with?"

"No one. I did think that after what you've done for me though that I should at least be there for you."

I smile and wrap my arm around her, "Well that just means the you will have to sit with us doesn't it?"

"I don't think I'd be allowed to. Also you're sweaty, get off!"

She shrugs me off and I chuckle, "Alright, alright. You're still coming though."

We make our way over to the runners where most seem to greet her in a friendly manner.

"If this happened a year ago most would've ignored you out of annoyance. What happened?" I question quietly so the others can't hear.

She sighs, "I realised how awful I was being so I decided to apologise. Apparently this spread around like wildfire and most now make the effort to talk to me."

"I'm proud of you."

"I'm proud of you too."

"Wait what for?"

"I don't think you've realised how many people you've impacted. Also, you have become a lot more social. This wouldn't have even happened last year as you probably wouldn't have even approached me."

I take a few seconds before I reply, "You're right...When I get home I'm not leaving my house for a week."

We laugh as the captain comes over, "Hey Raven, mind if I speak to you for a moment?"

"Yea sure, will you be ok Zoey?"

She points over to the others where Elias is jumping up and down, "It looks like Elias wants me so I'll be fine."

"Alright then." I say and follow Jacob over to Mr Bowman.

"Well done Raven, that was a very close race."

"Thanks Mr Bowman."

"Alright, well, I'm sure you'll want the chance to celebrate with your friends so I'll let Jacob say this to you quickly."

I look over to him as he begins speaking, "This year has been one of the best years of my life, from finding someone I love to actually passing my classes. This wouldn't have happened without this captains spot. The captain last year also said how much this spot did for him and the one before that and so on." I snort and he smiles, "A team tradition that we don't speak much of is how magical this spot is, I know it sounds odd but it's true. However it's also a secret that only the captains know."

"Wait a minute-"

"I think you've already guessed it but Raven: Would you like to be the next captain?"

I laugh and say, "Of course, I'd like to actually be able to pass math next year, I won't have you guys to help after all."

                                                                            ***

Nearly a week later it's halftime at the football game. As Zoey and her cheerleaders do their routine I look back over to the scoreboard. 18-27. We would need a miracle to catch up.

Normally I wouldn't have come but Elias was talking about school spirit or something... He's too cute to say no to. Anyways, the seven of us are here. Of the seven of us only five are paying attention to what's happening. While the others cheer on the school Adrian and I are nearly at the end of Danganronpa.

"Are you two going to actually watch the game?" Elias questions with a smile on his face.

"No." Adrian says while the others laugh.

I say, "Why watch that when you can watch Monokuma?"

"Who's that?" Noah asks.

"Be fully aware that the start of your summer holidays are going to be spent with me and I'm going to force you to play this game."

He laughs, "I can't wait."

During the last ten minutes Adrian and I finish the game so we tune into the game in front of us. 24-27. It appears we have somehow caught up a bit. I lean into Noah as we watch the game play out.

Had Liam of scored the penalty we would've won... What a conclusion.

As we are about to leave due to the cheers of the other team crushing us Liam suddenly runs towards the crowd and pulls someone onto the field. It takes me a few moments to realise who it is but when I do I frown.

It's Camila.

Every time I see her I think of how everything could've gone differently, what if there was something I could've said to save our friendship? I suppose I could've apologised to her months ago but I didn't see the point, I wasn't in the wrong after all.

We're both as stubborn as each other.

I suppose this is what she wanted isn't it? Someone who would want her enough to do a cliché apology in front of the school, at least she's happy I suppose.

"Camila, you are one of the most amazing girls I've ever met. I know things have been a little difficult this year but I love you. Would you go to prom with me?"

The apology didn't even have the word 'sorry' in it?

"Excuse me?" She says, even from all the way back here I can see how tense she is, "I have had the worst year of my life! You used me, you manipulated me, but you expect me to allow that lame excuse of an apology!"

"What apology?" He asks while looking at everyone staring at him, "Maybe we should do this somewhere else..."

"You're the one who started this in public so I'll be ending it in pubic. I lost so much because of you! How dare you act this way towards me, as if you've done no wrong. You know what? I don't have to deal with this. Never come near me again Liam. We're over."

Crowds begin to cheer and as happy as I am that she finally seeing Liam for what he is our group decides to leave. We did book a reservation at a restaurant after all... Ok maybe a bit excessive for after a school game but the foods good.

While walking over to Noah's car he puts his arm around me and says quietly, "You did all you could for her at the time, don't beat yourself up over it."

I give him a small smile and put my arm around his waist, "Better late than never I suppose."

As he opens the door for me I step-

"Raven, wait!"

I turn my head and that's when I see Camila running towards us.

I can't stand romance movies. Too many clichés. Like really, why do people like them? It's not as if they ever change. After all, the guy always gets the girl no matter who's hurt in the process. Normally I make it my mission to either stay away from romantic movie lovers or covert them. Until I met my best friend that is.
