The Hunter's last stand

Chapter 0 - The hunt for the Frostborn

Chapter 0 - The hunt for the Frostborn

May 24, 2021

Since the earliest days of recorded history, Titans had roamed the earth, some were benevolent, but others were not. These titans have plagued these lands for centuries, these creatures have devoured and destroyed everything in their path, so much so that many warriors and tribes had strived to hunt them down. I am one of them.

In my youth, I had hunted down the most dangerous monsters and had slain 6 titans. Not many can pull off such a feat. It’s because of this, my fellow tribesmen, as well as other village leaders, and those of other tribes had asked me to take down a titan so fearsome, that even I am fearful of its name, the titan was simply known as... the Frostborn.

The frostborn has terrorized the lands of the north for 30 winters, bringing death and destruction along with it. The frostborn only appears in these lands every 5 winters, but taking up my bow against this beast will surely be the death of me. For you see, I am 70 winters past my prime, my bones ache, and my muscles cramp, and I grow more tired with each passing day, But yet, taking on this hunt would be my last chance to end its terror once and for all, it would also mean that I could finally avenge the death of my chieftain, and eldest friend Randal, for he too had fallen at the claws of the frostborn. For those reasons, I had accepted their request, it was then that I left to gather my supplies for the trip, for this hunt will be long and rigorous.

I gather my supplies, I get my rations, ammo, and explosives. It was when I got my herbal medicines and salves that I stared at the jar of painkillers. I dared not to take them, for they will only hinder my abilities to hunt and fight. When I was done, I grabbed my bow and spear, I then took a moment to look at my house’s interior. The house itself was quite small and lacked the luxuries that most had in their homes, but to a hunter such as myself, they were only distractions, so then I went out of the door, locked it, and didn't look back.

For weeks I hunted the titan, and as the days went by, the endless chill of these icy, snow-filled lands started to slow me down. It was only the pain shooting through my body and my tenacity that kept me going. As I continued to hunt, I began to recount the days of my youth. When I was in my prime I had hunted and slain my very first titan. That titan was known as the Behemoth, it had earned its name as to being the tallest titan on record. It stood at a height of 130 meters. The sounds of its roar had thundered throughout the sky as I slew it. As my prize, I carved out its heart and ate it. As a child, I had learned at an early age, that eating the heart of a titan grants its eater extraordinary abilities such as increased speed, strength, and longevity. It was through this that I managed to take down 5 other titans and gain their abilities. Now I was after my 7th titan, no one in recorded history has ever taken down more than 6 titans, many have tried and failed, and I was not about to be one of them.

After two weeks of hunting, I had finally tracked down the frostborn. I tracked it all the way here to the ice pit. The ice pit is a huge crater on the far northern side of the valley. The titan’s huge icy body gave off a chill even greater than that of the harshest of winters. Its body was covered in scales of ice, and it had spikes of ice lining from the center of its head, all the way down to the end of its tail. Its elongated limbs were folded under its massive body. The titan just lies there asleep, I took this chance to lay explosives around it, then I climbed up the cliffside and lined it with the last of my explosives directly above where the frostborn had slept.

After I finished, I got to a safe distance at a good vantage point. I then lit the tip of my arrow ablaze and shot it at one of the explosives. This set up a chain reaction of explosions all around the frostborn. The titan had no chance of escape, it was instantly buried in a mountain of ice and snow. Even though it had seemed as if I had easily taken down the frostborn, even the most inexperienced hunters know that it’s NEVER that easy to bring down a titan. It was only a few moments later that the titan had risen from its icy tomb. Even at this distance, I could see the rage in its eyes. Then it flinched, somehow it knew where I was. The frostborn looked directly at me, I could feel its hollow gaze piercing right through me. A chill went up my spine, I knew at that moment that the hunt had now truly, just begun.

Minutes later, my fight with the titan had a bit of a rough start. Just after it found me, the frostborn got on all fours and charged in my direction. At that, I ran right straight at it, closing the gap between us even faster. As I ran, I aimed my bow and fired as many arrows as I could, but to no avail, the arrows got stuck in the titans' icy scales. Throughout the battle, the frostborn had tried to either crush me or eat me, and I had barely managed to evade its attacks. My stamina was starting to run low, and I starting to run out of arrows. I fear that soon, my time will run out, and I’ll just be another one of the frostborn’s victims. But then I began to remember all that I had been through, the monsters that had tried to kill me, the enemies that had invaded my home, the titans that I slain. I had been through so much throughout my life, and this was how I was going to die? At the very claws that had killed so many before me? The very titan that had killed my friend and chieftain?! I found that to be unacceptable.

It was then that a surge of anger coursed through my body. All I could think about was how I was going to defeat this monstrosity that now stood before me. With newfound determination, I mustered up the last of my strength and aimed my bow at my prey. It was then that the titan opened its mouth and shot a blast of large icicles in my direction. I managed to get out of the way and shot what little of my explosives I had left at its eyes and mouth. The titan screeched in anger. Now blinded, it shot more icicles everywhere it could. I did my best to evade them, and used everything at my disposal to bring the frostborn down. As it opened its mouth to shoot more icicles, I took this chance and shot the last of my explosives straight into its mouth. I was stunned by what had happened next. Explosives I shot into its mouth had exploded in the forstborn's body, its jade-colored blood dripped from its mouth as it tried to move. It tried to attack me, but in the end, the beast had no fight left in it. The frostborn had let out a blood-curdling shriek as it fell to the ground with a huge thud that shook the earth around it.

I was in total disbelief, I had finally slain the frostborn and ended its long reign of death and destruction. As it lay there lifeless, I began to walk towards it, it was then that I felt a huge amount of pain in my right abdomen. I looked down and saw a large icicle shard lodged into my side, this injury would have killed me in an instant if it weren't for the abilities I had accumulated through my travels. But even so, I knew I won't be able to survive this, not for long. It was then that I realized that this will indeed be… my last hunt. As I steadily walk towards the lifeless frostborn, the pain gets worse and worse as I keep walking. As I finally managed to get to the corpse, I took off the spear on my back and with the little strength I have left, I began to carve my way to its heart. As I do, I could feel the life draining away from my body. Then, for what seemed to be a few moments later, I found that I had managed to make my way to its heart, right away I cut it out. Then I placed my hand to it, and it immediately became the size of my fist. The reason behind this phenomenon has always been unknown; I didn’t have the time to ponder over it right now. I then quickly ate its heart.

I don't know for how long, but I walked away from the fallen titan, wanting to go home. I knew that I'd never make it, but I tried anyway. Then sometime later, I had found myself lying on the ground, snow was falling all around me. Soon I would be buried in the snow. What better gravesite for a hunter such as I. To be born in the endless cold, only to die in it. It was then I thought to myself,

“ I had a good run, I took down the frostborn as well as many other titans, avenged my eldest friend Randal, defended my home from waves of invaders, and saved the lives of many...... I think it’s about time that I rest now...... resting sounds nice right about now....”

I then closed my eyes and gave in to death's cold embrace. It was there that I died, in the cold, buried under the endless snow of winter…… Or at least, that's what I had thought.
