A Cliché Year

Chapter 19

Chapter 19

May 25, 2021

When I look at Camila I see someone who I thought I knew. For both of us our first close friends were each other. We were there for each other when no one else was. Yet she ruined that by leaving me for a guy. I should be mad, I shouldn't even listen to her...

Yet I find myself telling the others to go on ahead.

As I walk over I look at her tear stricken face and how she shakes. I can't tell whether its due to me or what happened with Liam. Either way before she can start speaking I remove my jacket and place it around her shoulders.

"Thanks Raven." She gives a small smile before continuing, "I am so sorry. For everything. In the start I was blinded by my idea of what a relationship should be. I thought I had to give him everything. That lead to me becoming stressed when he began being mean to me. I took that stress out on you and I only realised that I was doing so after the phone call where I tried to force you to apologise. After that I let myself drown in guilt, leaving me too scared to apologise."

She leads me to sit down at the bottom of a tree before continuing, "It was only when Atlas did... that when I realised that things had went too far. I did vent to the twins, I won't lie about that, but I never said it was your fault. I then decided that I would apologise to you the first chance I got, which just so happens to be now."

At this point she's crying again so I put my arm around her as she says, "I know that I don't deserve to be forgiven for everything but you deserve to hear this: Raven I am so, so sorry and you are one of the most amazing people I've ever met. I never should've let you go."

At this point I can feel the tears in my eyes so I pull Camila into my arms and we cry for what feels like hours.

As we pull away I smile and say, "Does this mean movie nights are coming back?"

"Most definitely." She laughs.

                                                                               ***

I sit on my king sized bed while watching Elias and Ryan with fond eyes. Ever since Elias discovered the 'horrifying reality' that we would never have a prom together he decided that he would help us get ready, he also somehow managed to rope the other first years into it.

They are currently sitting on the floor looking up hair tutorials. According to Elias there's apparently no point in having hair as long as mine if I don't style it every once in awhile, Ryan agreed. It was at that moment I decided that the next chance I got I would mess with Ryan's hair to see how he liked it.

"Raven stop staring at us and go get dressed!"

"Calm down Elias, he has time."

"He has two hours! Raven get a move on before I get your dad up here!"

As I move into the bathroom I look at my suit. While I had never before entertained the idea of wearing a blue suit rather than a black one I actually liked it. I wasn't exactly sure about the coral pink tie around my neck though.

While I managed to convince dad that I didn't need him to help me get ready - he only agreed once he realised Elias would be here - he still decided that he needed to design my suit. Normally I'd be annoyed, but even I have to admit that it's beautiful. There's also the added bonus that he made Noah's to so we match.

Yes, I admit I've become one of those people who don't mind matching with their partner. Don't dwell on it for too long.

Leaving the bathroom Ryan and Elias just stare.

I just smirk and ask, "Is there something on my face?"

Ryan just laughs and guides me over to a chair they must've brought up from the kitchen, "No there isn't and you look good."

"Thanks."

"Time for your hair!" Elias comes in with a wave of confidence... I lose any confidence I had until this point when I see the straighteners in his hands.

"... Do you know how to use those? I don't want my hair burnt off."

Elias smiles, "Yup, I even tried them out on Ryan before you came out."

"I'm surprised you even agreed to that." I say looking at Ryan.

"I didn't."

I chuckle as Elias begins.

About half an hour later I take a look at my hair. To my surprise Elias not only managed to get my hair into an elegant half up half down hairstyle with a bun but he also managed to somehow put waves in my hair with straighteners.

"Thank you guys so much." I say while putting my arms around them and leading them to the stairs.

"No problem." They say at the same time which causes the three of us to laugh.

Going into the living room dad literally jumps off of his seat.

"Ok I did so well." Dad remarks while getting me to spin in a circle, then again more slowly when I do it quickly the first time.

"Are you sure it hasn't got anything to do with the model?" I ask jokingly.

He looks at me carefully as if considering my joke, "Well... I suppose it does suit you extremely well."

He wraps his arm around my shoulders and looks at the other two, "Thanks for making my kid look decent. It probably wasn't an easy task."

Everyone laughs while I give my dad a surprised look.

Issac says, "Well he did get most of his looks from you after all." He winks while dad gives him a betrayed look, "Would you all like a cup of tea?"

We all say yes please and settle back onto the sofa.

As we finish we hear the doorbell. Elias says, "You stay here, I wanna see what Noah looks like."

"... So do I." I say as he goes to the door.

Dad just says, "Don't worry you'll have him all to yourself tonight." We laugh as Elias brings the others in.

Noah, Adrian, Levi and Gabriel enter the living room. As I look at Noah I swear that I forget how to breathe for a moment. His black suit hugged his figure perfectly and when he noticed me staring he winked and turned in a slow circle. When he faced me again I noticed that he also had a coral pink tie around his neck. I suddenly don' mind the colour choice that much anymore.

He comes over and takes my hands in his, "You look amazing."

"So do you." I smile back before dad approaches with a camera.

"Alright you two, outside so we can get a nice backdrop."

We laugh as we all go outside to the back garden and are directed to stand against the high wooden fence where fairy lights that dad had wanted years ago currently sparkled like stars.

Dad takes what feels like a hundred photos before he says, "Alright you can go now."

"Wait." I say suddenly causing everyone else to look at me, "We need one more."

Dad grins, "You want another photo? Who are you and what have you done to my son?"

I give him a small smile as I bring Levi and Ryan over. Noah, who gets what I'm doing, brings the other freshmen over.

"We've been friends all year yet we don't have any photos together." I explain.

"Aww!" Levi and Elias shout as they come over and hug me. Noah is smart enough to avoid them and put an arm around Gabriel.

I look over to Ryan and Adrian, "Please get your boyfriends off of me."

Ryan says, "No."

Adrian just laughs quietly while I proceed to be squished.

I feel betrayed.

Standing for the photo Ryan, Elias and myself stand in the front with the others behind. It was a nice photo. I believe dad got one nice one at least before Levi proceeded to jump on Noah's shoulders at least. While Ryan tried to get Levi down Adrian just came over and laughed alongside Elias and I.

As we leave the others wave while we get into Mr Bowman's car. I had originally said that Issac could bring us but he wanted to see his nephew off apparently. Since we got photos at my house I decided to let it go.

"So Raven did you accept the offer?"

I look at Mr Bowman confused and ask, "What offer?"

I look at Noah but he seems as confused as I am.

"Oh dear it appears that I spoke too soon... You know what? Screw it. Raven, Noah, neither of you heard this from me but Raven got the spot."

I barely contain myself from jumping up and down in my seat, "Did I?"

He laughs, "You did, well done."

"What spot are we on about?" Noah asks while slipping his hand in mine.

He kisses my cheek and adds on, "Well done though."

I smile lovingly at him and interlink our fingers, "Thank you. For the running spot."

"Ah, the team who decided to train a senior next year?"

Mr Bowman answers, "Yes, if you ever needed a running scholarship or decided to pursue running this would give you a real leg up Raven."

"In all honesty I hadn't considered either, I just love running." I say.

Running was my escape from everything, my way of coping. It was also one of the only constants in my life when we moved to America in the first place. I never considered that I could make a career out of it... But of course I have a prom to enjoy so I'll think about that more another day.

Parking outside of the school Mr Bowman sends us off with a wave. As we enter Noah mutters, "I'm glad he didn't decided to chaperone or something."

I laugh as I look at the room in front of us. We walked under the arch of artificial flowers as students laughed and danced on the other side. Many fairy lights were draped around the room like vines reaching towards the trees on every table.

For awhile we dance to upbeat songs before a slow song comes on.

Noah looks at me with a cheeky grin and I know something stupid is going to come out of his mouth, "Would you do the honour of dancing with me my prince?"

I just stare at him and take his hand, "You're lucky you're too attractive to say no to. Side note: Never call me that again."

He pouts as he holds me in his arms, "But I thought couples were meant to give each other nicknames." He then gives me a teasing grin, "After all I know how you love clichés."

I sigh and answer, "Clichés are annoying. I don't mind a nickname... Just not that."

He chuckles and pecks my lips, "Looks like I'll have to start thinking then."

We glide around the hall falling into a comfortable silence. I lay my head on his shoulder as he holds me tighter. As we dance I notice Camila, Atlas and Allura. Camila smiles at me and I smile back just as the dance ends. They then begin to walk over.

Noah leans down and asks quietly so only I can hear, "Are we evacuating the premises or having a conversation?"

I laugh quietly, "Just stay beside me please."

"Always." He smoothly responds.

They come over and Camila says, "Hi Raven, hi Noah. You both look amazing!"

I smile, "Thank you, so do you."

We are in that awkward 'so we're friends again' stage. I can't wait for the day I can hold a normal conversation with her.

Noah adds on, "Luckily for us, Mr Winters is good at making suits."

"I'm pretty sure he told you to call him Ezra, he'd be so sad if he heard you." I laugh.

Noah grins, "Good thing he didn't hear me then."

Allura steps towards us, "I don't believe I've had the pleasure of speaking to either of you yet. I'm Allura."

I grip Noahs arm and luckily for me he takes charge of the conversation, "It's lovely to meet you but we need to go as I've got a surprise for Raven. I'm sure we can talk another time?"

She smiles, "Of course. Have a good night both of you."

As they move away Noah takes my hand. Just as I'm about to ask him what he meant about a surprise the principle says, "Hello all, tonight I'm here to tell you all who got prom king and queen."

Noah looks at him for a few seconds before saying, "How mad would the school population be if I stole their prom king?"

"A junior hasn't won it in years, it's normally reserved for the seniors."

"Then I'm taking you for myself tonight."

I laugh and allow him to guide me out of the hall.

I can't stand romance movies. Too many clichés. Like really, why do people like them? It's not as if they ever change. After all, the guy always gets the girl no matter who's hurt in the process. Normally I make it my mission to either stay away from romantic movie lovers or covert them. Until I met my best friend that is.
