She hadn’t been back to the hospital since before I woke up. Dad thought she left because after hearing the recording and seeing how hurt I was, he tried to contact her but got now response. She had even checked out of the hotel she told dad she was staying at. This is the first time I’m seeing her in damn near thirteen years. Over the past few days I have been wondering what would happen or how I would feel to see her again. I wondered if I might have another attack or if I would actually be able to face her. To be honest I feel numb but I knew that I had to put my brace face on. Brenda still hadn’t noticed the person in the doorway until she spoke with a slight tap on the door. “Hello my dear. Did you miss me?”
Brenda quickly turns towards the door. The smile that lit up her face a few moments ago now a deep set scowl. I’ve never seen that look on her face before. “Get out of here. Sean does not want to see you, nor does he want you here.” Brenda half screams coming to semi hug and shield me when she notices that I have yet to move or respond. “I’m his mother, of course he wants to see me. Isn’t that right dear?” She saunters into the room, her scent giving me a headache. It was like she poured a whole bottle of some cheap sweet smelling perfume all over herself. As she gets closer I finally shake off the initial shock of her actually being here. “No, I don’t. I haven’t wanted to see you since the night you left.” She paused at my response.
A slight scowl flashed so quickly on her face before she recovered and tried to smile. “Well that’s no way to talk to your mother.” She replied. “Has your father not taught you any manners? Or has he let his little friend here teach you while he has been too busy to care?” Brenda took a deep breath and slowly released it before fully turning to face Stephanie. “What we teach and do not teach Sean is no longer your business. You gave up that right a long time ago as we have made clear when you came to the house.” Stephanie snared at Brenda, “I will always have rights to him. I gave birth to him after all.” She said it as if it meant something, making me wonder if she even knew that she has no say in my life anymore.
A mother leaving her cub for any reason is seen as a major offense. Especially if it is for the reason of second genders. It became a law after many families in the earlier ages used to mistreat and enslave children who were found to be omegas. Thanks to the Moon Goddess that we got a new council enrolled before I was born and that law was set. After Stephanie left dad took me to see the counsel who also act as the court system for wolves. Dad went through so much to make sure that she had no rights to me in case she came back and tried to take me away. He was so hell bent he even went through the process of divorce to make everything more legally binding. Everything was handled quickly because in the end Staphanie had rejected the bond to both of us. The council decided to revoke all of Stephanie’s rights and grant dad’s divorce. We took our little two week road trip a month later.
Snapping back into the present, I hear some heaving footsteps running down the hall. A few seconds later dad and a few enforcers are in the doorway. Just by feeling the energy coming from dad I knew he was livid. “Please leave.” He said so eerily quiet but we still heard him. “Why do I have to leave my son's room? Huh, Max?.” Stephanie turned to face dad as she replied to his statement. “Okay that’s fine, you don’t have to leave.” He turned to Brenda and I and stretched out his hand, “Come one guys, let’s get out of here.” He didn’t have to tell me twice. I quickly got all of the things that I had left to pack on the bed and shoved them into my bag. I was ready within two minutes. While Stephanie kept trying to get me to talk to her alone. I look around the room once more to make sure that I have everything, even though dad could always just get anything I leave behind. I just didn’t like having the staff clean up my mess. Noting that I have everything I grabbed onto Breanda’s arm that was on the opposite side to where Stephanie stood. “Are you not going to talk to your mother? That is just rude of you. I mean I made the effort to come all this way to see you and this is how you treat me.” Stephanie practically whined. “No one asked you to come here. I have been doing just fine without you.” I said without even so much as glancing in her direction. I heard a few gasps of the people who were standing close enough to look like they weren’t trying to pay attention but hearing everything. “A cold hand grabbed my arm very tightly and pulled. I was pulled so hard that the force and speed at which it happened caused me to collide with Brenda and cause us both to fall. Thankfully dad was able to catch us somewhat and soften the blow. “Don’t you ever disrespect me!” Stephanie seethed as I turned my gaze to her. Light green eyes that matched mine glared back at me. Brenda was about to say something but I cut her off. “I’m sorry, but who are you to touch me? The last time I checked you lost all rights to me when you left all those years ago.” I was truly getting tired of all of this. All I wanted now was to go home, have a hot shower and go to bed. This was beginning to annoy me a bit. Why did she choose today of all days to come back?
There was even more commotion in the hallway. Then I heard my dad, “Hello Alpha Kaine, Luna Mabel, young alpha Jax. I’m sorry for the disturbance. We were just on our way out.” Damn it! Why did it have to be them at this moment? I was already embarrassed enough as it is after realizing just how many people stood or walked by my room in the past ten minutes of this whole altercation. “It is quite alright Max. May I ask what the problem is that is causing all of this though? That is if you don’t mind me asking.” Dad blushed as did mine. I didn’t even want to turn around now, but I would have to suck it up and just walk very quickly to dad's truck.
“Yes I do mind. This is a family matter.” Stephanie answered Alpha Kaine’s question with a little bit of snark in her tone. I turned towards the people in the door seeing Luna Mabel turn flashing gold eyes at Stephanie. Her and her wolf, not liking the way Stephane just spoke to their mate.“Watch your tone with our Alpha! If I’m correct you are no longer a part of this family, which is now connected to our pack that you are not a part of.” I can tell that the Luna was trying to rein in her anger and slightly failing.
Alpha Kaine cleared his throat. “I understand ma’am, however this is not the place to discuss your family matters. Besides if I understood correctly, little Sean here is still recovering and should avoid all and any stress.” At this moment my respect for the Alpha and Luna went up a whole hundred notches and it was already high. Dad turned back to us and motioned for us to go to him. “Let’s get you home bud.” Dad said as I got to him and he wrapped his arms around Brenda and I. Just as we turned to leave Stephanie says something that had the three of us burst into full belly laughter. “I will be taking you to the Council if you keep trying to keep Sean away from me.” She said it so confidently I wondered if she had no shame.
Dad pushed Brenda and I behind him and turned back to Stephanie still chuckling as he said, “Go right ahead Stephanie, they have been looking for you for almost thirteen years.” At that Stephanie’s bravado faltered a bit. “What do you mean? Why would they be looking for me?” She asked. She looked genuinely shocked at what dad said. Dad’s voice suddenly popped into my head, “Champ if I answer her question here..” He trailed off and I understood what he was asking. “It’s fine dad, they would have found out at some point.” Giving him the okay to continue with what he was going to say Especially with her just popping up out of the blue. I’m pretty sure there will be a lot of questions after all of this.
Everyone in the hallway was no longer pretending that they were not paying attention. They waited for dad to put them out of their misery or give them the best part of the scoop for the gossip mills. Dad cut our link and pulled a paper out of his bag that I didn’t even realize he had over his shoulder. Handing the paper to Stephanie he says, “I didn’t waste any time after you left to make sure that Sean was protected from you at all cost.” Stephanie’s face turned a deep shade of red as she read whatever was on the paper that was given to her. “Wait, they can’t do this. He is my child! I wasn’t even there for this so how can this even be valid.”
“It is very valid. You see, once you started talking about selling Sean that night I figured you would’ve tried to pull the mom card. Thankfully you had already broken the bond between us and you had already rejected Sean.” Her face paled, “You no longer have any rights to my son.” Dad pointed in my direction. “Because of your venomous words all those years ago my son now questions anyone who wants to get close to him. You made him feel as if it was his fault that he was an Omega. It took him years to get where he is now and I refuse to let you mess up all of his progress.” At that last but dad clenched his teeth trying to bite but back his anger. I have seen him do it a few times when he is annoyed with patients who refuse to take their meds on time or at all.
“What do you mean by that? Sean was sleeping in his room when we were talking downstairs.” Dad shakes his head, “No he wasn’t.”
“I was waiting for you to come say goodnight like you did every night up until then. I heard you and dad yelling at each other so I went to ask if you were going to come tuck me in, instead I heard what you really thought of me.” I took a deep breath after saying all of that in one breath. “Oh yeah let’s not forget that you are only here because you hope to sell me to pay off your debt. Am I right?” Her mouth hung open. She stared right at me shaking off her stupor. “I have no idea what you are talking about.” I pull out my phone and open the file that I had Jasmine send me after my little crying fest. Hearing her side of the conversation Stephanie looked as though she was going to be sick. After the recording finished the little crowd behind the Alpha and his family started to murmur and point into the room. Even the Alpha looked ready to hurt the woman who kept stating that she was my mother. When Stephanie didn’t try to respond after the recording finished, I turned to dad and asked him if we could please go home now. He turned to the Alpha who still looked upset, “Is it okay for us to leave sir? I know you wanted to talk to me about something.”
The Alpha shook his head, waving off what dad said. “No, it can wait. Take your family home, we will see to it that this person is escorted to the pack line.” He motioned for one of the enforcers who had come with dad to hold onto Stephanie. I thought she would’ve fought to get away but she went willingly. I looked to the door feeling like someone was drilling a hole into the back of my head. That was a very bad idea. I should’ve just kept my head down. As soon as I turned in his direction our eyes met. His ocean blues that always have this glint in them is staring right at me. As always I get nervous and want to run from the room. I think the Goddess heard my pleas and dad called for me to take my things to the truck. He threw me the keys and I hightailed it out of there, not looking back even when I made it to the private parking for the staff. But as luck would have it I didn’t escape the wolves den yet. I might’ve just ran deeper into it instead.
