"HAHAHAHAHA!"
Abel has been laughing at him for the last five-no-ten minutes. The cat is laughing so hard he’s crying and his silvery grey hair has fallen out of his small pony tail and into his face. Caelus almost feels like biting him, but that would be against several work safety codes. If he did and if Mrs. Grimble, the Branch Manager, found out he’d get fired.
"HAHAHAHAHA!"
But it’s tempting.
"Shut up already!" he growls low and the cat takes a breath, before chuckling a little more.
"How can I, when after all that effort-” Abel snickers, “You forget to even sign the love letter to our Little Luna?”
The wolf's hands are over Abel’s fangs before he can utter another peep.
“Shut up! She’s going to hear you!” Caelus hisses.
He glances over to the window a few meters away where said person is currently sorting out the recent delivery from Estoria with Cookie and Marishka.
They’re outside the Maple Lakes post office in the shade of a tree, where they keep the trucks and where the delivery folk take their breaks. Beast-Walkers made some of the best on-foot delivery folk with their abilities and in their little town, he and Abel had been doing the job as soon as they’d graduated from their high school newspaper runs.
One of the town’s famous maple leaves falls too early and brushes past him when Abel pushes the hands away
It’ll be autumn soon.
“Keep your fangs in! She’s not going to hear me,” he says. He puts his hands on his hips and his tail twitches in irritation. “It's not like she's rabbit folk. She's just a regular human."
“You take that back,” Caelus growls immediately. “There ain't anything regular about her!”
Abel scoffs.
“Yeah, yeah. I know,” he says, before clasping his hands together sarcastically, the sharp eyes doe-like and his voice voice pitched higher. “Little Luna is kind and sweet and all the things that make me gag a little. You are so lovesick for her it's actually the grossest.”
Caelus turns away bright red, ears low and tail stiff.
He’s not that embarrassing is he? It’s just whenever he thinks of Luna he can’t help but-
Laughter drifts out the window.
One is the gaggle of the gose-folk, Marishka, the other is loud and hearty and undeniably Cookie and the last is …is soft and it snorts a little. He can hear her trying to stifle it but she can’t and he finds his tail begin to wag and he feels the line of frustration fade with the wind that brings him her laughter.
There’s a sigh and a mumble of something rude before a soft hand is on his shoulder.
“Alright, alright,” Abel turns him back toward him, arm on his shoulder. “I’m sorry.”
Caelus looks sceptical, which makes Abel snort again.
“No, really,” he says with a chuckle and then the smile on his face is genuine and familiar. “Look. I'm happy she finally has a hint after all this time and I think your chances are good. But now what are you going to do? When are you going to tell her directly?”
That makes the wolf wince.
“I don’t knowwww!” Caelus whines, holding his hat in his hands. “The letter was supposed to do that and I can’t just rewrite it!”
Abel sighs and shoves him a little.
“It’s alright, you big dog!” he says and Caelus growls. “We’ll think of a back up plan! I’m sure there’s something that-”
“YOU GOT WHAT THIS MORNING?”
The voice is Cookie's and the laughter from the window is gone in a heartbeat.
Abel snickers as Caelus turns to stone.
“Or maybe we won’t have to do anything at all?”
