Adrian thought about it when he drove by the toy shop on his way home from work. He did have money, but the problem was that he had to pay for rent and food so he needed something cheap for a gift. He just ignored the toy shop as a whole and went home.
His house was a small simple apartment, that was affordable at least. He and his wife Shelly broke up three years ago due to them just being a terrible couple, and unfortunately she took all the money. They still got fifty-fifty when it came to Timmy, but whenever Timmy came there all he got was disappointment. Timmy was only six, so he was still young and energetic, but Adrian’s cheap little apartment was not fit for any child or teenager.
Adrian laid on the couch and turned on his TV, since that was all he had to do at his house. Work was a nightmare today, in fact when was it not, and Adrian just wanted to lay down and watch TV for half-an-hour. He stopped only to make himself some microwave dinner, but he kept the TV on.
While he ate his dinner, he sat back down on the couch and continued watching TV. Nothing much to do for the night, so he planned on going to sleep after his meal.
A small CGI spider appeared in the room with the kids, which they looked at in shock. Well, the thing wasn’t that much of a spider, it was more like a weird insect with arms. The insect, or “Music Man” as the commercial named him, was milky white and had dark pink eyes, more pink on his body, a large top hat, and carried massive cymbals. The spider appeared to look friendly, until it cut to the next scene showing an animatronic version of Music Man who appeared to be three feet tall, and unlike the friendly cartoon version from the previous scene looked like something from the uncanny valley.
The commercial went on about the many features of Music Man. Those features included playing music, making custom songs, singing, and fun for kids (that’s what the commercial said). At the very end it listed the price for the toy being 29.99, which rounded to thirty dollars. Even though the toy was cheap, he wasn’t sure if Timmy would’ve liked the thing.
Timmy didn’t hate animatronics, in fact Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, the most popular animatronic fast food chain, was his favourite restaurant, and Music Man was manufactured by Fazbear Entertainment, so surely that was a plus. The problem was Music Man was just so disturbing that it looked like something out of a nightmare. The best part was that it was cheap.
Adrian went to the counter where his laptop was charging, grabbed it, went back to the couch, then searched up about the toy. Turns out Music Man was very popular with kids, and people on social media were talking about the toy. Adrian felt that the toy was perfect, but he needed to talk to someone. He pulled out his phone and called up Barry, his friend who was also a father.
“Hey Adrian, what’s up?” Barry asked.
“Barry, have you heard of this new Music Man toy?” Adrian asked.
Barry laughed. “Adrian, have you been living under a rock for the past few days?” He asked. “That toy’s like the next biggest trend imaginable! I bought my two kids that thing and they fell in love with it instantly!” Barry’s tone switched from cheerful to concerned. “Anyways, why you asking?”
“Well, since it’s Timmy’s birthday coming up, I was thinking on getting it for him,” Adrian told him.
“Why not? If my kids love it, surely he will,” Barry replied.
“Thanks bro,” Adrian said. “See ya around I guess.”
Adrian felt like it was stupid of him to not go to the toy shop, and he didn’t want to waste gas driving there and back. Guess that was the first thing he was doing tomorrow morning.
Adrian put his laptop aside, then turned the TV back on and began watching some more.
The inside of the place was filled with toys old and new, from plushies, to action figures, the store had it all. As soon as he entered, there was a whole shelf with Music Men sitting there in boxes.
“Hello,” she said. “Is that all you’re buying?”
“Yes it is,” Adrian said, and placed Music Man on the counter.
“Good thing you came here early, these things sell out quick,” the cashier said and scanned the box.
Adrian then paid for the toy, then brought it into his car. Adrian drove back to his apartment, and when he got inside he wrapped up the box with some wrapping paper he still had surprisingly. Adrian also had a card he got a few days ago while grocery shopping to be prepared, so he signed it, and then sealed it in an envelope. Another thing Adrian bought to be prepared was pizza and cake, since those would probably be the things a six year old would like to eat during their birthday.
Unfortunately, Timmy’s birthday would probably be very disappointing. Okay, maybe a little disappointing is a better way to put it, since he’s got Music Man and who wouldn’t want that uncanny valley mess (adults, that’s who).
Adrian didn’t have much to do for the day, so he went for a little run afterwards, and just killed time until Timmy would show up.
“DAD!” Timmy called and hugged him.
“Hey Timmy,” Adrian said and hugged him back.
“Happy birthday my boy.”
“Bye mama,” Timmy waved to her.
“So, did you have a party?” Adrian asked.
‘ Yes,” Timmy said. “We went to Freddy’s yesterday and I had so much fun! All my friends were there, we got to eat pizza and cake, we watched Freddy and his friends perform, and presents!”
Adrian laughed. “Well that’s good. Well I hope you don’t mind having pizza twice in a row.”
“Dad, you know this already, I love pizza!” Timmy and Adrian hugged again.
“Well before we eat, I have a surprise for you,” Adrian told him. He ran to get the wrapped gift, and Timmy decided to follow. “Here’s a present for the birthday boy!”
Timmy unwrapped his gift quickly, then a surprised look on his face came when he saw Music Man.
Well that’s something she is correct about, Adrian thought, knowing full well how Music Man was the stuff made of nightmares.
Adrian warmed up the pizza while he and Timmy watched a cheesy animated movie that someone his age would like. Music Man was still in his box, but Adrian would always look at the thing and think of how much of a terrifying mess the thing was.
After dinner, the movie, and cake, Adrian helped Timmy set up Music Man. The instructions were fairly useful, explaining how Music Man worked and how to activate him.
“Well buddy, this is gonna take a bit,” Adrian said to Timmy. “You can watch some TV if you’d like.”
Timmy did exactly as Adrian had commanded, so he went ahead to work on Music Man a bit.
The first thing he did was install the Fazbear Entertainment app, which took about a few minutes. Second, he created an account that was required to use the app. Lastly, he went to the button on the top right that said “DEVICES” and upon clicking it a message appeared on screen asking if he’d like to connect his phone to Music Man. He did exactly that, then Music Man had something new to say.
“Great, now that I am all set up, it’s time to make some music!”
“TIMMY!” Adrian called, and Timmy ran inside the room. “He’s finished!”
A smile grew on Timmy’s face, and he looked at Music Man with excitement. Adrian then clicked Music Man’s icon on his phone, and then a panel opened up. Adrian gave Timmy the phone, and then went to go do his own things while Timmy played with Music Man.
Adrian watched some TV and Timmy went to his room with Music Man. Adrian could hear noises coming from Timmy’s room of him playing with Music Man, which sure was cute, but annoying at the same time. All Adrian could hear were cymbals crashing and banging, and the toy annoyed him a little. But it was just a stupid toy, what could possibly go wrong?
Though since the week was over, it also meant his time with Timmy was over. Every Sunday was the day that he and Catherine would swap their time with Timmy, and it was now her turn.
“Can I bring Music Man to mommy’s?” Timmy asked politely. As cute as it was, Adrian and Catherine made a rule that whatever belongs at Adrian’s or Catherine’s house stays at its respective house.
Adrian then picked up Timmy. “Now let’s get going buddy.”
Adrian brought Timmy and his backpack to the car, and then drove to Catherine’s house, which was about fifteen minutes away from Adrian’s apartment. Adrian walked Timmy up to the porch of the house, then gave him a big hug.
“See you next week little guy,” Adrian said.
“Bye bye daddy,” Timmy said.
Adrian entered his apartment, and the first thing he was greeted with was Music Man’s lifeless grin as he sat on the coffee table. Goosebumps crawled up Adrian’s arms when he saw the inanimate spider. He wasn’t leaving it on the coffee table, that’s one thing for sure.
Adrian went into Timmy’s room and examined the toy. He unplugged it and turned it around, it was turned off. Maybe he was dreaming? That’s highly possible.
