"What do you do? Can you even take care of my son, or are you with him so that he can take care of everything for you?" Mrs. Levy questioned.
"Honey." Mr. Levy called again, trying to stop his wife from going too far.
Caden had to stop himself from grinding his teeth. A typical thing would be introducing yourselves and having a cordial conversation. But ever since he sat down, Mrs. Levy has been on his case.
This time, Dean squeezed his hand, trying to apologize for his mother's behavior. He knows how overbearing she could become.
Caden started to relax after he felt Dean's hand squeezing his. "Ma'am, I have been taking care of myself since I was young, so I am not with him so that he could cater to all my needs. Furthermore, I take care of your son."
Dean jumped in, "She does, mother," he internally cringed at having to use female pronouns for Caden, "she has helped with cooking, cleaning, studying, etc. Caden wants to be with me out of love and not for secret motives."
Caden is a unisex name, so they never came up with another name. Plus, if they did, Dean knew he would screw up and forget it after a while.
And even though his mother called him almost every day, he would only update her about his studies and not his life. So, she did not know about the actual Caden at all.
It was silent after Dean spoke those words as his mother hummed, sipping her tea. Then, she finally put down the cup before asking two more questions.
"How did you meet my son? When did he propose?" Mrs. Levy stared at Caden, not moving her gaze away from him.
Caden would like to think that he and Dean met three times before getting to know each other. The first time was when Dean asked him to move in during class. The second time was when they went to the flat for Caden to move in.
And the third time marked the start of their friendship because he thought Dean was too clumsy and adorable to have any motives against him.
Caden smiled as he knew what he was going to say. And it was like Dean knew what words would leave Caden's mouth because Dean covered his face.
"We met at the school but did not talk until we saw each other again at the grocery store. Dean did not think he would need a basket because he was going to get a few items. But, his hands were full, even if it was a few things.
"Once we were near each other, he tripped and dropped his items. I quickly went to help him as I told him he could use my basket. After we finished and left the store, I reminded him not to forget a basket even if he is getting a few items."
Mr. Levy smiled at the story, knowing how clumsy his son could be. The mother did not react, so Caden went to talk about when Dean "proposed" to him.
He decided to use the time Dean rented a park to give him a picnic when he felt stress over the first year's finals. Caden was mad that Dean rented out a whole park for him, but he couldn't stay angry for long when Dean gave him food he tried to make for the picnic.
The food was hard and burnt, but Caden was grateful. It also marked the day he started to fall for Dean, only to push it away because he should not think of his best friend in that way.
"Dean rented out a park for me. Although I was mad, it turned out to be excellent. The finals stressed me out, and Dean decided to have a picnic; he even cooked food."
Dean started to turn red when he thought about the food he made. They were more like rocks, and he could not help but feel guilty because Caden kept eating the food since he made it, only to end up sick the next day.
Sensing his thoughts, Caden hit his shoulder with his, smiling at him while saying that everything is fine. Caden never regretted it. He would eat the food again if he had the chance.
"The food was something, but I still ate it, and I believe that was when Dean knew that he wanted to spend his life with me. The man went down on one knee and proposed. It was perfect." Caden had a soft smile on his face, making Dean's heart skip a beat.
Even if Caden added the ending, he was not wrong. Besides his first attraction to Caden, after that day, Dean discovered that he did want to have the man in his life forever.
There was no one like Caden, and he would feel lost and empty if the man ever left him. That is why he pushed all his feelings away because he did not want to lose him.
Dean turned to Caden with a soft smile and eyes that tried to hold back his emotions, "Yeah, I knew that I always want you on my side."
Caden turned towards him while smiling back. Mr. Levy felt like the woman was the perfect match for his son. It has been a long time since he saw Dean smiling this way.
All Mr. Levy wants is for his family to be happy, so he approved of Dean's wife.
Mrs. Levy stood up, causing the warm scene to break as everyone turned towards her. "Stay the night. Tomorrow morning, I want to talk about having an actual wedding."
"Yes, ma'am," Caden responded.
"Okay, mother." Dean followed.
She hummed, looking at her husband to follow her. Mr. Levy stood up, telling them bye as he left the garden with his wife.
Caden and Dean leaned back in their chairs, relaxing as they did not let go of each other's hands.
"I believe that went fine," Caden commented.
"It did. If my mother is talking about a wedding, then she approves."
Caden frowned at the word wedding, "Do we have to have a wedding? I rather not wear a dress."
Dean looked at the sky, humming a bit, "I do not think anyone could talk my mother out of a wedding, but we will see."
"Okay."
A few minutes passed in silence as they stayed in their spots before Dean popped up, pulling Caden with him.
Caden stood from his seat, almost stumbling a bit from Dean's pull. He was getting ready to yell at the man when he saw the smile on Dean's face.
"Let me show you my old room."
Dean walked Caden out of the garden and back into the home as he made his way to his room. Not once did they let each other's hands go.
