“never thought I would see you again..” I said as I climbed down the tree, “..so, what are you doing back here?”
Laura pointed the knife in my direction.
“I came here for answers.” She said
I tilted my head a bit to the side. This was all very strange. Why would she ever come back to the forest? What answers is she looking for?
“the other day when you took me… what did you want? You couldn’t have just wanted to take some weird pictures of me. And why didn’t you kill me? I could of just told the police were you were.”
“Is that really the only reason why you came to me?”
“No. I have many more questions. Now answer me.” She said.
I sighed. “yeah. I really only took you because I wanted to take pictures. Nothing more, nothing less. And originally I was going to kill you but….”
“but what?” said Laura
I didn’t say anything back for a second. I never really thought why I hadn’t killed her, I just never really wanted to… at least not her.
“…I-…I’m not sure why…” I said
Laura looked me up and down for a moment, and then slowly lowered down her knife.
“ok… well, how did you know my name?”
“..what do you mean?”
“you said my name the last time we met. You told me to stop. But I never told you my name. So how did you know it? She said
“…. When you first moved here, I saw you talking to a girl with a pony tail. You mentioned that your name was Laura..”
Laura pointed the knife back up at me.
“so now you’re a murderer, a kidnaper and a stalker?!” Laura yelled
“no….. I mean- yes.. kind of? I go to the outskirts of the town sometimes and listen to what other people say. I don’t really have anyone to talk to so its really the only thing keeping me sane.” I said
“You’re already insane.” Laura added
“….anyways I just happened to catch your name is all… -and I saw you get ice cream.”
Laura backed up a bit, and then slanted her eyes.
“…y-you, you were the thing that broke the twig behind the tree, Weren’t you!”
I backed up a bit, but Laura then moved up until she had me pinned up to a tree with her knife to my throat. “why are you like this?!” she yelled
I didn’t know what to say. And I didn’t know why I was letting her pin me to a tree. I could easily kill her, but again I had no desire to. I did want her company though. So if pinning me to a tree is what will get her to stay a bit longer, then I guess I can bare it. Plus I doubt she could ever really kill me unless it was in self-defense, so I don’t really have much to worry about.
She loosened the touch of the knife to my throat after a while. Then she pulled out a letter from one of her pockets.
“Do you have anything to do with this?” she asked
“did you send a letter to my house pretending that I went to a sleep over?”
“…I had to make sure that people thought you were lying somehow. If I just let you go, and didn’t do anything to cover my tracks the police would be at my doorsteps in seconds. I would be in death row in seconds…”
Laura’s face scrunched up even more for a minute, but then it slowly turned into her having a corner of her lips turn up.
“ I do have to admit, that was pretty smart.” She said
“… thank you…”
“…ok-.. I have one last question for you.. Why did you cry when you told me to stop? Especially if you just kidnaped me for photos, I mean- if you already had everything set up to make it seemed like I lied, then why cry? Why stop me?”
“…I- ….. I haven’t talked to anyone in three years…”
Laura removed the knife from the position next to my throat. “you mean you just wanted someone to talk to?”
I lowered my head a bit as I said nothing. I never truly realized how sad that sounded. I guess I also never knew how desperate I got either.
“why did you go through all that trouble when you just could have asked me?”
I tilted my head at that. “Would you have ever wanted to talk to a masked murderer if I didn’t kidnap you?” I asked
“…..no… I guess not…” she said
After that we sat in silence for awhile, until Laura spoke again.
“…What you did was still wrong…-but… even creepy, white masked murderers need someone to talk to… and… I’m sure if you didn’t kidnap me I wouldn’t have any friends at all… so.. if you ever want someone to talk to, you know were to find me.”
“oh! But no kidnapping, ok?” she added
I nodded my head yes.
“…..how did me kidnaping you help you get friends?” I asked
“….well the ponytail girl that you saw me talking to didn’t like me being around, so she spread some rumors , and before you know it, no one in this tiny town wants to be my friend.”
“yeah but that’s not true for everyone. You said you made some friends.”
“nope. I don’t have a single friend in this town.”
“then who is the person you made friends with?”
“you, Post.”
I felt a surge of this, bubbly, butterfly feeling in my stomach. I’m so glad Laura is my friend. But then the bubbly feeling in my stomach faded away. She knew my name. Or at least the name the locals gave me.
“-how did you-?”
“turns out you’re a pretty popular legend. Many people in the town talk about you here. I’m honestly a bit surprised I haven’t heard of you before, considering how much and how often they talk about you. Many people thought that when I came back wearing a dress and saying that you kidnaped me, that I was playing a prank. So it wasn’t long before I learned you’re name.
Laura then started to walk backwards to go back home.
“I’ll see you some other time!” she said
And then she disappeared into the forest.
I sat their thinking about the conversation we had for a moment. But then moments later Laura came back again.
“I don’t know the way back home.” She said.
