19. Sofia

19. Sofia

Jun 14, 2021

"For the time being, Sofia, you are to wear this bracelet that completely drains any energy you have if you use your powers whatsoever. If you take off this bracelet, then you shall be burned at the stake for going against this coven. Do I make myself clear?"

That had happened a month ago. Currently, I'm going through my daily life like a normal human. It's awful because a) I have to actually get on the ladder in my bookstore just to grab a book, b) actually cook with my own two hands, and c) do so many other things that were much easier with magic by hand. Geez. Being a human is terrible. There's nothing in life that makes things easier for you unless you're living a lavishly rich lifestyle with other humans at your beck and call.

Honestly, I could be living that lifestyle, but that only brings attention to me in the end because when you're rich they keep track of you. Who, especially a witch, wants that? That's the same as me putting a target on my own back.

However, it's not like I can't completely use magic in the first place. I can use a little at a time, but there's no use in that. That's like having the magic of a two year old within my world and that's embarrassing within itself for me.

As for Violet, Gloria, and Lysander, they weren't punished by my request to Sarah. Instead, they were all scolded severely by her and made to promise to never ever do it again. Although, Violet didn't want to accept it at first until I knocked her out and told Sarah that she would accept no matter. Because of that, she's upset with me and I can't blame her, but she's not about to get punished with me for an idea that was solely mine and mine alone. I'd rather take the punishment by myself.

However, I know that Violet is more relieved than anything that I'm alive and not dead. Hell, I'm relieved too, but I did make peace with being burned at the stake for my crimes. As much as it may sound that I'm bluffing about this, I'm serious. If bringing back someone I consider to be a dear friend means that I'll have to die instead, then I'll gladly accept my fate. It may sound like I'm suicidal, but I had made peace with being burned at the stake and I had already started preparations to help Davina continue her studies even in death.

"So you've been practically stripped of your powers, but you're still allowed to teach me?" Davina asked.

"Yes I am," I answered.

"How will you teach me when your energy will be drained once you use your magic?" She asked.

"Hm? Oh when I thought I was going to die, I made some little videos that will be up to a hundred years worth of lessons," I informed.

"Whoa. You were really ready to die," She remarked.

"Mhm, but we can go over the lessons for up to six months that way. Once this bracelet comes off, we can go back to normal with them," I added.

"And I can't wait until they come off," She said.

"Me too. Living like this is hard," I mumbled.

"I bet. I don't know how humans do it," She agreed.

"Me either and it sucks," I sighed.

"Six months is a long time. How will you cope?" She inquired.

"Don't know. Sarah said I should use this time to find a suitable husband or something," I rolled my eyes.

"Are you going to do it?" She asked.

"No. Try as she might, I'm not going to do that at all. Even though she gave me a time frame for it, I'm not interested," I answered.

"You know how pushy she can be when it comes to you. She'll make you do it whether you like it or not," She said. She didn't have to remind me of Sarah's terrible flaw. I already knew about it.

"Finding a husband is going to be the worst thing I've ever done. It's not like any of the suitable bachelors are all that great anyway," I muttered.

"Aren't half of them, like, way older than you?" Davina questioned.

"Yes they are, but Sarah sees nothing wrong with it," I rolled my eyes.

"Gross," Davina remarked.

"Very," I agreed.

"If only some type of Prince Charming would walk through that door and sweep you off your feet," She sighed.

"Prince Charming is overrated," I added.

"Don't tell me that you've dated a prince before," Davina said, chuckling.

"Once, but he was a pompous ass and I hated him. He couldn't stop having sex with the chambermaid though," I responded.

"You've had 'em all. From a prince, to a count, to a knight, to a painter, to a writer, to a poet, to an investment banker, to a CEO, etcetera. When will I get as lucky as you?" Davina questioned. That put a smile on my face. Many women within this coven and around the world always ask me that, but my only advice to them is to be yourself. That's how I managed to date and sleep with many prominent men.

"Just play your cards right and you'll get as lucky as me," I smiled.

"All I've ended up dating are guys who scam money from people or just literal scumbags," Davina muttered.

"Maybe try harder when you're a little bit older and not dating Eros, which I highly doubt will happen," I suggested. Those two were practically joined at the hip. It was a pipe dream to ever see them separating any time in the future.

"Yeah. You're right," She agreed.

"Of course I am," I smiled.

"Speaking of Eros, he wants to take me to the beach for a graduation present," She informed.

"What beach?" I asked.

"He's thinking somewhere out of the country," She answered.

"How will you get to a beach out of the country? You know the organization uses buildings like airports to sniff us out," I said.

"We know and he wanted me to ask about any magic items that will allow us to travel undetected," She explained.

"I might have something for you two," I replied.

"What is it?" She asked.

"Magic items like jewelry and such are required to be taken off during security checkpoints, but we have developed a new way to combat this," I explained.

"Like what?" She inquired.

"Tattoos. They're not something you can take off and they're permanent on the skin as well," I informed. Tattoos are the one item that the Blood Brothers cannot detect whatsoever. Why? Because a tattoo is very undetectable and it'll be next to impossible for them to just inspect every single tattoo on every single person they come across in the airport. Tattoos are a witch's greatest ally and will continue to be until the end of time.

"You're going to tattoo us?" She questioned.

"Yes. A simple little black line on your ring fingers should do the trick," I responded.

"Will it keep us concealed?" She asked.

"It will. It's the most effective thing we have to keep us undetected when traveling to foreign countries. I've used it many times during the past century and it's marvelous," I answered.

"I'll tell Eros about this," She beamed.

"Alright. Now, the tattoo should be able to get you past customs going in and out of the country," I told her.

"Okay," She nodded.

"If you feel a little worried about it not working, then go to Violet and ask her to make it stronger. She's already helped a young witch that's bouncing around from country to country with this," I responded.

"There's a witch that travels from country to country?" She asked.

"Oh yes. She's a sweet girl and her parents don't know that she's a witch," I answered.

"What's her name?" She inquired. All I could was just shrug in response. It was a complete and total mystery to me as in to who this girl was. Violet told me that she was somebody that came from a family that wasn't very understanding and that keeping her identity a secret was very important.

Even though I don't know who this witch is, I could always read her mind, but Violet made me promise to not do that at all and I've respected her wishes. I'm not going to betray my own friend and that witch who wants to stay a secret. I'm not a monster, which some may highly agree with.

"I'll go tell Eros about this," She said.

"Alright," I nodded, "And he'll need something to get through customs too. He'll need Violet's help with it."

"What could that be?" She asked.

"He's a werewolf, right?" I inquired.

"Yes," She nodded.

"That organization not only has incorporated magic detection technology into TSA's systems. It would be foolish to think that he is out of the woods as a werewolf, especially when that man's brother is the one killing them off," I informed her.

"Wow. I'll remember that as well," She replied.

"It'll do you good to remember it. You're a witch and he's a werewolf, you're both considered targets separately and together you're even greater targets," I added.

"You're making me not want to get away," She mumbled. A lot of witches have felt the same as her when I've told them this information, which was caused them to just completely cancel plans to go on trip. Whereas others will still go and obtain any magical items that will leave them undetected.

"I'm only telling you what and what not to be wary of," I simply stated.

"And scaring the hell out of me at the same time," She muttered.

"This is the reality of all of us, Davina. We have to watch our backs more often than any other creature in this world," I said.

"I know," She sighed.

"Until things get better for us, then we'll never be safe no matter what we do," I replied.

"You're right," She said.

"Now run along and tell him this information. It's very important that you discuss this today," I waved her off.

"Yes, Miss Sofia," She smiled softly.

"And take the day off while you're at it too," I said.

"Will you be okay alone?" She questioned.

"Our new employees will help me," I answered, gesturing to the two boys that I had manipulated into working here.

"Alright. See ya," She smiled, grabbing her bag from behind the counter.

"See you later," I smiled. The door to the shop closed behind her and Sirius let out a small whine.

"She'll be back tomorrow, Sirius. Don't worry," I assured him.

"Boys, when you're done organizing the bookshelf, make sure you go and tidy the study area," I said.

"Yes, Miss Sofia," They responded in unison. It was great to have such good help. Those two were very hard workers when they put their minds to it. This is all thanks to me by te way because had I not scared them shitless and wiped their memories clean, then they would be back to square one. Their own parents have personally visited the shop to thank me for giving them jobs after school, which was the least I could do to alleviate their concerns for their sons' futures.

The door to the shop opened and in walked a tall, handsome man with brown, shoulder length wavy hair. He was a very large that gave off such a menacing air that could make even the strongest and proudest of lions cower away. He looked like a man that could kill with his bare hands.

When he walked further into the shop, I immediately recognized him as the man that had punched that slimy bastard I used to date. Violet will get a kick out of this when I tell her that he appeared before me again.

"Welcome to Pendragon's Books," I greeted. His brown eyes landed on me and instant recognition came over his face when he saw me.

"I remember you," He said.

"I remember you too. You punched that greasy bastard in the face," I responded.

"It's the least I could do for you," He said.

"That may be true, but I'm very grateful towards you for doing that. He's been in a real pain in my ass," I replied.

"I'm guessing that he does things like that all the time?" He questioned.

"Yes he does, even though I make him regret it every single time," I smirked. Sirius got up from his pillow and walked over to the man. He walked around and sniffed him.

"Is it wise to have a dog in a bookstore?" He asked.

"Some might say that, but he's a very well trained dog. He knows not to chew on the books," I answered. Sirius stood on his hind legs and leaned against him.

The man bent down and began petting him with a small smile on his face.

"What brings you to a bookstore? You don't seem like the type to frequent one," I murmured.

"Do you always stereotype your customers?" He let out what seemed to be a chuckle.

"Only the ones who stick out like a sore thumb," I smiled softly. Most that even step into this shop are just men looking to flirt with either me or Davina, which we both end up sweet talking them into buying a bunch of books too. They never come back after we do that and it puts money into our pockets.

"I'll have you know that I read in my free time," He replied.

"And here I thought that you were the type to just go do some manly things in the woods," I joked.

"You've got jokes now," He chuckled.

"I've been told that I'm a comedian," I responded.

"Well, I do go to the woods and do manly things as you put it, but nothing beats sitting down and reading a book," He explained.

"So my statements were true?" I cocked an eyebrow with an amused smile.

"Yes they were," He rolled his eyes. I laughed softly.

"Anyways, what kind of books are you looking for?" I inquired.

"What do you recommend?" He inquired.

"Do you really want recommendations from somebody that just stereotyped you?" I teased.

"You seem kind of reliable, despite your misguided comments about me," He responded.

"You're correct," I smiled, chuckling.

Slowly, I stood up from my chair and walked around the desk.

"I've got quite a few books that you might be interested in," I said, gesturing for him to follow me. He stood to his feet and immediately he towered over me.

"A giant," I remarked, not realizing that I said that out loud. That was a little embarassing to do and usually I never say what I'm thinking out loud.

"I get that a lot," He said. He followed after me towards the shelves and I noticed that the boys were off doing their other tasks.

"Let's see what I've got," I murmured, climbing up one of the ladders. My eyes scanned the shelf for a book until finally I found one.

"Catch," I said, tossing the book to him. He caught it with ease and I climbed down the ladder to move it to another part of the shelf. I climbed back up and tossed one book after another to him, which he caught with ease.

"How much are you trying to spend?" I inquired.

"Trying to bleed me dry as much as possible?" He joked.

"Maybe, but I need to know so you don't intimidated while paying," I smiled, giggling.

"A little under seventy," He replied.

"Great," I grinned, "I'll definitely keep it under that number."

I continued my hunt for books for him while he caught them effortlessly. It was a little fun to be up here doing this and exchanging some playful banter with this customer. I haven't had a customer like this in a while and I was actually pretty happy too.

When I got to the seventh book on the shelf, I had a hard time trying to pull it out. I'm chalking my difficulty getting the book out of the shelf to Davina sandwiching it so tightly on the shelf, even though I've told her about this over and over again. I was able to pull it free from the shelf, but I guess I was leaning too far back because I was falling backwards off of the ladder. I closed my eyes and braced for impact...

...it never came.
