“It looks like the delivery man
has arrived”
Mayor Angler was happily looking at Will's right arm. He took a handkerchief from his pocket and cleaned a big stain of blood from his mouth, then he spoke.
“Oh gosh... It's a shame! I forgot you can't use your powers when you are eating. And you eat people, like me. Don't you? Enjoy your meal, my friend”
Will's right hand was now frantically bubbling. A dense blue smoke was steaming out of his arm. The blood that covered his limb was slowly being absorbed by his skin. He felt stronger. The tangle became softer and started to expand from his shoulder to his face, and inside his mouth. He could feel it in his throat. And then he could hear his own voice speaking, but those words weren't his own
“Jack! You son of a shrimp! We meet at last”
“It's a honour to meet the son of a God, Belzer the Kind. I have used... unorthodox methods to get you here”
“Oh...I remember, you know. Where is my Keeper? I need to teach him a lesson”
“He's my guest, don't worry. You'll see him soon enough...Your new acquaintance...what a pity... that should have been me, you see. You need a stronger host.”
Belzer childish laughter echoed in the empty kitchen. Will's arm moved instantly with incredible acceleration. It punched the Mayor's face with such a strength that he got violently slammed against the wall. The clattering noise of shattered tiles covered the innocent giggling coming from William's throat. Such an impact would have killed anyone, but Mayor Angler came out of the debris unharmed. His black eyes were now full of rage, his mouth was open to show hundreds of pointy theeth 'That was a huge mistake' his low voice was guttural and angry. Will's arm aimed for another shot, but the Mayor jumped on him dodging the punch and sinked his teeth in his right shoulder. The pain was so intense that Will almost fainted. Mayor Angler frantically shook his head and jaw and severed Will's arm in a matter of seconds. Blood was squirting everywhere again. The boy fell on the floor next to his chopped arm. The white kitchen was stained of red on its walls and ceiling. A scarlet puddle was slowly spreading on the floor. Will was desperately screaming in pain. White foam was coming out of his mouth and his eyes rolled. In his feverish sleep everything was fuzzy and confused, but he could hear a tiny voice “What a show-off you are, stupid boy! It's just an arm”
“Just...an arm? In the last few hours you ruined my life in so many ways you can't imagine. There's a place I need to be...I must be... and now I'm going to die. It is true that Gods are cruel and selfish”
“You mortals are such drama queens... I know I probably asked too much of you. But look at me. I am hardly magnificent as the stories tell. I need you and, sorry to say, you need me.”
“I'm dying... I'm not going to need anyone anymore”
“Tell me kid... can you feel any pain right now?”
Will gasped in disbelief. He could not feel any pain.
The little voice in his head spoke again “I didn't want to drop this on you yet, as you have been through a lot already. But you are not going to die. We are now irreversibly connected and since I'm basically immortal...you...”
“Are you saying that I'M A GOD now?!”
“Well not really. You really suck kid, and I technically hatched two days ago... so that's a very long shot. I'll explain it better if we get out of here as a whole... This motherfisher here knows stuff... a lot of stuff about me and my siblings. This give him an advantage that I cannot decipher”
In this feverish vision Will was laying on the floor exactly as in reality. His right arm was missing. In front of him he could se the thin figure of a young person. He or She had blue glimmering skin and wasn’t wearing any clothes. Steam was coming out of the creature’s eyes and nose. A cerulean light was streaming out of his mouth.
“Who are you…?” Will feared the answer “I assumed you were a male”
“In the eye of the God, gender is irrelevant. This is me, Belzer the Kind, in a century from now, or ten thousand years ago. I can’t really remember. You can assume whatever you want, child. It is what all mortal people do. Your time on this world is so brief and feeble that you always opt for the easiest answer.
Will, you needed to have a glimpse of my perspective even though you are not ready. But I suddenly understand. We are not ready for this encounter... I am not ready. If we want to escape from this fishing situation, we need to work together. Ok?”
William opened his eyes. Mayor Angler was now standing next to him, reaching for the arm on the floor with greedy eyes and a smile full of teeth. A big chunk of Belzer was still attached to the chopped body part, convulsively shaking as a decapitated snake. The Mayor didn't notice that the boy was awake. Will suddenly reached for the arm on the floor using his left hand. He grabbed it and violently hit the Mayor’s face with the wobbly arm. Jack lost his balance and fell on the floor, just in time for Will to become invisible again. He was starting to get the hang of it. He didn’t even need to speak to Belzer. It happened instantly in his head. He jumped on his feet and started running. He dashed for the secret door, keeping the severed limb close to his chest. He barely noticed the table slamming against the wall, a few inches from his head. Will instinctively turned to see the big lady lawyer looking in his direction, her eyes injected with blood. He completely forgot about her and that was a mistake. She had just tossed a massive worktop at him like she was playing volleyball. The muscular woman had now reached for a trail full of cutlery and was starting to throw knives, forks, and spoons with relentless precision. Will dodge them by laying on the floor and stopped moving to avoid making noise.
“She must understand what we are doing” Belzer moaned “They know about the secret door, of course. We are not gonna make it...” Will painfully whispered he was pale and covered in cold sweat “You are right, we don’t have time to open the door or they will know our position. But remember they can't see us. Lend me your strength, little thing”. Belzer started to expand again. Will could hear a furious roar coming from the Mayor. It was terrifying. The boy silently got up and dashed swiftly towards the hidden door. Objects of all kind were now flying around him. But he didn't stop running. He didn't stop running when he felt the sharp pain of something penetrating his back. And he didn't stop running when he charged through the wall. He ran through it, smashing the secret door with his left shoulder while protecting the severed arm with his body. The impact was so violent that he rushed through the hidden chamber and hit the elevator's metal door breaking through it, as well. He bumped against the lift cage and disgracefully fell onto the elevator floor. Will didn't have time to realize where he was or to come back to his senses that the loud metallic noise of snapping cables resonated in the cave and the elevator began to scream. They were falling.
The Mayor and the Lawyer were staring at the dark abyss left from the falling lift.
“I am sorry, Jack…” the strong lady bit her lower lip and flavoured the metallic and sour taste of her dark blood. She was shaking in frustration “…it was my fault. I should have blocked all the exits”.
“No Tamara, the responsibility is mine. I have underestimated the Son of a God and an ignorant smuggler.” He growled violently between his blood-stained teeth at the obscure and bottomless ravine. His wrath reverberated between the steep rocky walls. The lawyer could feel the blood freezing in her veins.
The Mayor’s lifeless dark eyes glanced at the black distance. He made a deep snarly breath and smiled. He spoke to his employee with renewed composure and elegant articulation “Find anything you can on the boy and hurt his family. I want to destroy the very core of his miserable life. To get to the God, we mutilate the human.”
Mayor Jack Angler straightened his tie “And send the cleaning team to fix this mess of a kitchen”.
“Yes, Jack…I’m on it”
The Mayor walked through the debris with utter calm and carelessness. He had a speech to deliver.
