“They have trained for today, but this is it. Do you think it is a waste of time?” She said.
Tenzin studied the waves lapping on the sand, “I don’t think so. Every moment counts for something, even though you think you can’t see it. They didn't enter the game, but they have spent so much time together. Every match they played, and every hour they practised. Brother to brother. A family. They were making memories. The way I see it, they didn't waste their time. Not at all."
“Your friends are here,” Tenzin said as he saw a group of people approaching.
Bolin and Tenga waved their hands while Mako gave her a nod of greeting.
“Yes. We can watch it together!” Bolin beamed, “Asami said she would buy tickets for all of us.”
The stadium was full. The tickets were sold out so quickly. If Asami didn't buy it beforehand, they wouldn't be able to see the game tonight. Korra was sad that she couldn’t take Naga with her this time, but at least she wasn’t sitting alone. They sat on the bench and watched the announcer introduced the teams.
The game ended with the Wolfbat won. They walked around the ring, waving their hand to the audiences while the announcer informed about them being the champions four years in a row. Korra tried not to think about that, but she still felt her blood boiled with rage. Surely, one day someone will teach them a lesson, right?
“Sir, please came back to your seat.”
Tahno laughed, “What? Are you also want a part of our glory? If you want to have my signature, you'll have to wait like everybody else.”
The man didn’t say anything. With a quick moment like a weasel cobra, the man grabbed Tahno’s head and pressed the other hand against his chest. There was light coming out of them, and with a blink, Tahno was already lying on the ground. The arrogant man looked exhausted. He tried to get up and attack the masked man with waterbending, but not even a waterdrop moved before collapsing back to the ground. Unconscious.
There was a silence, and then quickly turn into a grasp. No one knew what was happening, but there was one thing they know. Whatever that man did, Tahno’s bending was gone.
The masked man took out a microphone that Korra guessed he stole from the radio broadcaster. His eerie calm voice echoed in the stadium, “I believe I have your attention, people of Republic City. Let this be a demonstration for you if you stand in my way, you will meet the same fate.”
The stadium exploded with screaming. People wildly pushed their way to the exit doors. Suddenly, there was a flash of light, and more people lying on the ground while the masked man took his time coming toward them.
Korra felt the electricity danced at the back of her neck. She turned in time to dodge an attack from an electric gun. The ambusher lost his balance and Korra knocked him out. She quietly thanked her Firebending sifu's constant fight with Katara have helped her learning to detect an upcoming electrical attack.
She jumped on a bench to have a better look, and she didn’t want to believe what she saw. The masked man was grabbing Tenga the way he did with Tahno. She screamed for him to stop, but it was too late. Tenga fell to the ground, being erased his bending.
“Get her.”
They launched into an attack, and she let her instinct take over.
She dodged and punched and Firebended, one after the other. Until she felt a stung on her leg and crumpled down. The masked man appeared in front of her like a phantom. She felt the energy radiated from his hand for a second before he suddenly lost his grip let her fall to the ground.
Korra quickly took back her control and rolled over. She regained her feet and set a blue fire danced on her palm. She hadn’t lost her bending yet.
“You stupid idiot!”
Korra couldn’t hide the smile on her face when she saw the person who saved her life.
“I told you to stay away from trouble and call the police!” Lin hissed.
Korra wanted to object. She needed to know who this man was and how did he know her, but she met the stern look from Lin, and she knew she was defeated. Korra started to turn around and looking for her friends.
“You’re not going anywhere.” The masked man got up. He adjusted the mask that was slightly fell out. She could see a glimpse of scars on his skin before it quickly disappeared underneath the mask.
She saw Mako and Bolin were fighting a group of rebellions. Korra ambushed them and threw them to the water with her Firebending. A shadow moved and she barely dodged an attack from behind. But before she could finish the rebellion, she saw Asami jumped on him and took him down single-handed with bare hands.
“How many surprises do you have?” Korra said.
As they crossed the bridge, the water rose and launched at them like spears. She couldn’t move quickly with the weight on her shoulders. For a second, she imagined being impaled by the water spears, but a metal cape whipped at them and made it exploded like a water balloon.
The last champion has gone.
