Korra: Replay

Chapter 7: The last standing champion (part 2/2)

Chapter 7: The last standing champion (part 2/2)

Jun 19, 2021

The golden light of the Pro-bending arena sparkled magnificently through the night. Even though she was on Air Temple Island, she could still hear the noise of people cheering. The final game would start soon.

 “Are you not playing today?”

Korra greeted Tenzin. The Airbending master landed his bison on the ground and sat down with her. She told him the story.

“They have trained for today, but this is it. Do you think it is a waste of time?” She said.

Tenzin studied the waves lapping on the sand, “I don’t think so. Every moment counts for something, even though you think you can’t see it. They didn't enter the game, but they have spent so much time together. Every match they played, and every hour they practised. Brother to brother. A family. They were making memories. The way I see it, they didn't waste their time. Not at all."

Korra didn’t say anything anymore. She was satisfied with the answer, so they both sat in silence, enjoying the view.

“Your friends are here,” Tenzin said as he saw a group of people approaching.

Bolin and Tenga waved their hands while Mako gave her a nod of greeting.

“We're going to see the final game. Would you like to go with us?” Bolin asked.

"Are you sure?” Korra blinked in surprise.

“Yes. We can watch it together!” Bolin beamed, “Asami said she would buy tickets for all of us.”

Bolin didn’t look sad anymore. Korra couldn’t tell if the boy was genuine or he was acting. But she was glad regardless they were still friends even though they were not a team anymore.

“Go on. Have fun with your friends.” Tenzin said.

The stadium was full. The tickets were sold out so quickly. If Asami didn't buy it beforehand, they wouldn't be able to see the game tonight. Korra was sad that she couldn’t take Naga with her this time, but at least she wasn’t sitting alone. They sat on the bench and watched the announcer introduced the teams.

"There they come!" Asami beamed and then realised everyone was staring at her, “What? I’m a big fan of Pro-bending,” Asami said.

“Oh, which team do you think will win?” Korra asked.

 “The Wolfbat,” Asami said innocently.

The game ended with the Wolfbat won. They walked around the ring, waving their hand to the audiences while the announcer informed about them being the champions four years in a row. Korra tried not to think about that, but she still felt her blood boiled with rage. Surely, one day someone will teach them a lesson, right?

“Sir, please came back to your seat.”

The audiences turned their attention to the referee and then to a man with a mask. He stood up from the crowd and walked toward the ring even though there was no bridge from there. When he reached the edge, the water beneath rose and froze into an ice bridge, and he made his way standing in front of Tahno.

Tahno laughed, “What? Are you also want a part of our glory? If you want to have my signature, you'll have to wait like everybody else.”

The man didn’t say anything. With a quick moment like a weasel cobra, the man grabbed Tahno’s head and pressed the other hand against his chest. There was light coming out of them, and with a blink, Tahno was already lying on the ground. The arrogant man looked exhausted. He tried to get up and attack the masked man with waterbending, but not even a waterdrop moved before collapsing back to the ground. Unconscious.

There was a silence, and then quickly turn into a grasp. No one knew what was happening, but there was one thing they know. Whatever that man did, Tahno’s bending was gone.

The masked man took out a microphone that Korra guessed he stole from the radio broadcaster. His eerie calm voice echoed in the stadium, “I believe I have your attention, people of Republic City. Let this be a demonstration for you if you stand in my way, you will meet the same fate.”

“What is he talking about?” Bolin baffled.

The masked man was staring in a general direction. Korra noticed the wire connected from the microphone and to the radio broadcasting.

“He didn’t talk to the crowds,” she said, “he is sending the message through the radio. A warning to the government.”

As Korra finished her sentence, the last member of the Wolfbat fell to the ground. The masked man didn’t leave yet. Instead, he shifted his attention to the crowd, and a shiver ran down her spine.

“And it seems like the ‘demonstration’ isn’t just about the Wolfbats.”

“I don’t know what trick he’s pulling, but we have to get out of here! Now” Mako hissed.

The stadium exploded with screaming. People wildly pushed their way to the exit doors. Suddenly, there was a flash of light, and more people lying on the ground while the masked man took his time coming toward them.

Korra felt the electricity danced at the back of her neck. She turned in time to dodge an attack from an electric gun. The ambusher lost his balance and Korra knocked him out. She quietly thanked her Firebending sifu's constant fight with Katara have helped her learning to detect an upcoming electrical attack.

"Enemies are blending in the crowd,” Korra warned her friends.

“No kidding.” Mako rolled his eyes. “How do we get out? The crowd are turning crazy.” As Mako said, some people were running by and knock him off. Korra quickly lost sight of the rest of the friends from the terrifying crowd.

People were pushing her to get away too, and she started to lose track of where to go before she heard a scream from Tenga.

She jumped on a bench to have a better look, and she didn’t want to believe what she saw. The masked man was grabbing Tenga the way he did with Tahno. She screamed for him to stop, but it was too late. Tenga fell to the ground, being erased his bending.

“You!” Blinded by anger, she ran and let out a vigorously blue fire toward the masked man, but he dodged it. The masked man turned around and paused as though he saw a ghost, but he quickly resumed his calming.

 “The Avatar.”

The name froze her, and for a moment, she completely forgot her anger. This man knew who she is.

“You have grown,” he continued, “and you’re a Firebender now. Interesting.”

“Do I know you?” Korra forced her voice to come out.

The masked man only replied with silence. He snapped his fingers and more of his army surrounded Korra. Electric guns and gloves armed.

“Get her.”

They launched into an attack, and she let her instinct take over.

She dodged and punched and Firebended, one after the other. Until she felt a stung on her leg and crumpled down. The masked man appeared in front of her like a phantom. She felt the energy radiated from his hand for a second before he suddenly lost his grip let her fall to the ground.

Korra quickly took back her control and rolled over. She regained her feet and set a blue fire danced on her palm. She hadn’t lost her bending yet.

“You stupid idiot!”

Korra couldn’t hide the smile on her face when she saw the person who saved her life.

“I told you to stay away from trouble and call the police!” Lin hissed.

“You’re the true champion,” Korra said. She looked up and saw more police officers and metal benders dropping from the rooftop. Some of them fought the rebellions, while the rest tried to move the citizens out of the way.

“Save your flattering and get your friends out of here!” Lin yowled.

Korra wanted to object. She needed to know who this man was and how did he know her, but she met the stern look from Lin, and she knew she was defeated. Korra started to turn around and looking for her friends.

“You’re not going anywhere.” The masked man got up. He adjusted the mask that was slightly fell out. She could see a glimpse of scars on his skin before it quickly disappeared underneath the mask.

Lin retracted the metal cape to prepare for another attack. “Your opponent is me, Amon!”

She saw Mako and Bolin were fighting a group of rebellions. Korra ambushed them and threw them to the water with her Firebending. A shadow moved and she barely dodged an attack from behind. But before she could finish the rebellion, she saw Asami jumped on him and took him down single-handed with bare hands.

"Self-defence class," Asami said when she saw Korra gave her a wide look.

“How many surprises do you have?” Korra said.

“What? Do you think I’m a daddy's helpless little girl?” Asami retorted.

“When you’re done flirting, we can get out of here,” Mako growled.

Korra picked up the electric glove from the man who tried to attack her and threw it into the water, knocking out the rebellions that were trying to get back on.

“Wow. That’s a bit cruel, isn’t it?” Bolin gasped.

“They took away Tenga’s bending,” Korra grumbled.

Bolin widened his eyes in shock, but Mako didn’t say anything. He found Tenga and started to lift him up, "let's go." he said.

“Wait! What’s about Tahno and the Wolfbats?” Bolin halted. The police officers were helping the citizens, but none of them noticed the unconscious Pro-bending players inside the ring.

“Leave them! They’ll be fine!” Mako hissed.

“No. They will not.” Bolin pointed to an explosive device that was tied around the pillars underneath the ring.

He ignored Mako's objection and Earthbended a bridge himself. The boy picked up the Waterbender, but he couldn’t carry all three of the members. “I need help!”

Korra didn’t want to waste time arguing, so she ran over and helped him.

 “Happy? Let’s go!” Korra sneered.

As they crossed the bridge, the water rose and launched at them like spears. She couldn’t move quickly with the weight on her shoulders. For a second, she imagined being impaled by the water spears, but a metal cape whipped at them and made it exploded like a water balloon.

“Keep running, kids!” She could hear Lin’s voice echoed, but she couldn’t see the Metalbender. Korra resisted the urge to look back. Instead, they ran faster and eventually made it toward the exit door. She quickly dropped the Wolfbats to a safe area and turned back to help Lin.

Just as she was about to reach the threshold of the door, everything suddenly turned upside down with a big explosion. Rocks and roof were starting to fall down. For a second, before it blocked her view, she saw Amon and Lin on the other side. Both looked wounded. The only difference was, Lin was on the ground.

The last champion has gone.
