Sonke smiled as he walked into August's room. He sat on his bed, watching him as he drew inside his famous sketchbook.
"Congratulations." He said.
August stopped writing and turned to look at him. "I didn't do anything," he pouted.
"Aren't you and that girl dating?" August didn't say anything but averted his gaze instead. "Of course you are!" He chuckled. "I know that I told you to be careful before, but you look genuinely happy, and that’s good. And I can’t really tell you to stop seeing her, now can I?" He shifted closer to August so that he could speak softer.
"Tell me about her," he whispered. "Is she pretty? What does she do? How did you meet?"
August bit his bottom lip, trying to hold back a smile. "Kholwa is beautiful."
"Yeah?" he wagged his eyebrows at August, "isn’t that just the infatuation talking?"
August shook his head, "No. Not at all. It’s just that everything about her makes me so happy. Like—like her smile. Like the way she cutely yawns when we’ve watched too many movies, but she will still say she is not tired. Like her small hands in mine."
"Wow, you should be a poet." Sonke laughed.
"Don’t make fun of me," August also chuckled. "I don’t know, it just feels right."
August carried on to tell him about how they met and how hard it was for them to get to that point in their relationship. He told him about the sky-diving. Although he had been scared, he was very happy after doing it, especially since Kholwa was right by his side.
August's phone started ringing and he glanced at it. He pouted when he realised it was not Kholwa. Sonke chuckled, standing up. He gave August a hefty pat on his shoulder.
"I want to meet her someday. You should introduce us." He said and then left the room.
August answered his phone, sounding less enthusiastic than he intended. The person on the other line sighed.
"My calls are annoying you nowadays, aren't they?" Veronica said, sounding annoyed herself. August became more alert.
"No, of course not, Vero," he chuckled. "You’re my favourite person in the whole world even!"
"Ha!” She said, “I hope your girlfriend doesn’t find out you called me your favourite.”
"Ahh," August chuckled.
"Just get ready, I’m taking you out." She said.
“On a date?”
“No, no, no. It’s not like that. Also, I wouldn’t date you if you were the last sane man alive.”
“Thanks.”
“Now, hurry up. I’m passing the Burner Building. I’ll be there in ten.”
