“Hello.” I greeted with a wave. She didn’t respond, she just continued reading her book. “Um, hello?” I swiped my hand in between her face and her book. She didn’t even move a muscle, Andrea walked up next to me, “What’s going on?” I whispered through my teeth, leaning up to her ear.
“Stupid, you have to use a spell. That way she knows you’re a witch and that you’re here, otherwise she won’t see you. And if you’re not a witch, you can’t borrow books. It’s actually quite interesting, if you try and borrow a book, it's sort of, like you’re a ghost. Your hands just go through.” she revealed. I nodded, “Look up from your book, for we wish to find our own.” she whispered, making a plus sign with two of her fingers. The plus glowed in gold, and waved gently through the woman's head.
“Ah! Andrea dear, how are you?” she questioned, in a happy tone.
“Fine, Ms. Salem, how’re you?” Andrea responded. I waved my hand in front of her face once more, Andrea suppressed a laugh.
“I’m great, is something funny?” Ms. Salam inquired in a perplexed tone.
“Right! Concord Lance, she’s here but she hasn’t said the spell yet. She’s acting all funny.”
I scoffed and chanted the spell, “Hi, my name is Concord Lance. It’s a pleasure.” I smiled, putting my hand out. Andrea grabbed my wrist and dragged it back to my hip. I left it there, figuring that Andrea knew more than me.
“Ah, nice to meet you as well.” she gasped after her sentence, “You’re the one with the Phoenix!” she exclaimed. She grabbed my hand, pulling my ring off, “So interesting, I mean it is quite surprising. I haven’t seen a familiar-object transformation in at least a millenia!”
How fucking old are you?? I thought.
“Oh dear, how rude. You must never ask a lady her age.” she lectured with a wave of her hand.
Huh, did I say that outloud? I don’t remember doing that. I would notice right? I thought in a confused state.
“You did not say it outloud! I can read thoughts. It’s my specialty, some witches have different specialties. But most combine their subpar abilities to help with the witching world.” she grinned.
“Really?! That’s so cool, how does it work?” I questioned, looking at her tentatively. I wonder if there’s a spell for that? Is there a book that I can read to understand it more? I thought, Oh that’s right! I can just ask, although she can hear my thoughts so how does that work? I’m so confused. I lost myself in thought.
“My goodness! You are a very inquisitive child aren’t you!” she proclaimed. “Calm down, there are plenty of books on mind reading.” she handed me a card, “here this is your library card. All you have to do is think about what subjects you’re looking for. Then the card should show which shelf it’s on. Here, what do you want to learn about?” she questioned, I realized that she had a slight Canadian accent.
“Hm… Everything!” I exclaimed, beaming with excitement.
“Um, okay you have to choose one.” she chuckled slightly.
I could feel Andrea’s stare, “Uh… then Mind Reading.” I grinned. I looked down at the card and black lines wiggled across the screen, “5-6-BS?”
“Oh! Wow, that’s really far away, maybe you should choose a different subject.” Ms. Salam offered.
“Ok, how about… familiar-object transformation.” The lines did the same, “Restricted? Wha..?”
“Ah, it seems you can’t access that information. Only elemental witches are allowed to access those.” she explained.
“Aren’t you an elemental witch?” Andrea muttered.
“No! I’ve said this before, I’m not an elemental witch, at best I am average.” I clarified angrily.
“Well, you could always try. All you have to do is confirm that you are in fact an elemental witch.” she smirked.
“I’m just gonna go find out more about mind reading.” I laughed awkwardly, shuffling away. I’m not an Elemental Witch! Why does everybody keep saying that?! Because if I am then people will expect more from me or something. That scares me! I don’t want that, I just wanna be normal! And have fun! I thought, as anxiety seeped into my thoughts. The air around me swerved towards me, the ground shook lightly as I kept having similar thoughts. I was staring down at my card, not really noticing what was happening, until I felt a hand squeezing mine.
The ground stabilized and the air calmed, “It’s okay, I got you.” Andrea smiled warmly at me. I tore my hand away and nodded, slightly. She slung her arm over my shoulder, “So, mind reading! Why’re you interested in that?”
I shrugged, “I’m interested in everything. It’s fun learning new things, plus Mind Reading!” I exclaimed with a smile, looking up at her.
She stared down at me in what seemed like astonishment. “What else are you interested in?” she smiled warmly, leaning closer to me.
“Hm.. I guess summoning. That’s cool, I mean being able to summon anything! I could summon a Doughnut! Imagine how awesome that would be!” I beamed, I was looking down at my hands, waving them around as I spoke. I looked up at her, to find her eating a doughnut, “H-How did you get that?”
“Summonings my specialty.” Her words were muffled through a full mouth.
“I wanna do it too!” I grinned, I thought of a doughnut, “I beckon you to my side, for you have no choice but to obey me.” the pastry appeared above my hand before dropping into my palm. “It worked!” I bit down on the food, before inhaling the delicious snack.
“Wow, you have zero manners.” Andrea laughed.
I looked up at her, “I have manners!” I yelled angrily, she dragged her hand to my face as we slowed to a stop. I gave her a confused look, she bent down and licked a bit of food off the side of my mouth. I flew back, hitting the bookshelf, “What the hell?!” I whisper yelled.
