Brit was having second thoughts on going back to Verdall County. "Chief, I'm seriously having second thoughts. I know it's our home town and all but... I feel unsafe there."
Chief, who was helping packing up Brit's things, stopped for a while and gave a loud sigh. "Well, there's no turning back. Plus, you have to face your demons. Despite having a traumatic memory, face it alright?"
"I should just write a letter of rejection--"
"No, Brit. We will be doing this. My girlfriend is excited as well to see our hometown. Plus, we already packed the last of your things besides the other furniture..." Chief said. As he said that to Brit, a knock came outside of Brit's apartment. "Moving Service!" someone shouted from the other side of the door. "And the movers are here," Chief finished.
Brit gave out a sigh. "I guess you're right, Chief," he said. "Come in!" Brit yelled at the door. The door opened and three people came in. "You can start with those in front of you," Brit ordered. The three nodded and started moving Brit's belongings. "Want to go in the car now? They'll be handling this," Chief said.
"Sure," Brit said. "I gave you the address right?" Brit asked one of the movers. "Yep. We'll be following behind," the mover responded.
Chief and Brit went out of the apartment. They went down three flights of stairs just to get to Chief's car. "Hey Brit!" someone greeted from the front passenger seat. It was Pangaea. "Hey, Pan," Brit replied. The two got in the car and Pangaea instantly wanted to start rambling about the way to Verdall County. "Hey, uh, Brit... uh...do you have your keys?"
"What keys?" Brit asked.
"The keys your parents left you before they went abroad. The one that opens your house?"
"Oh yeah! I always kept that with me. How about you? Where will you stay?"
"My parents are in the care of my brother. So I have the keys to my house as well," Chief replied.
"SO... Can we go now?!" Pangaea said in excitement. "Yup, babe! Hometown, here we come!" Chief said as he put in the keys and turned on the car. The car engine started instantly and Chief started driving. From the city to Verdall County was a 16-hour drive including breaks. They had quite a day ahead of them. They left about 8 in the morning, so they'll arrive at about 12 midnight there.
Brit tried to sleep all the way through but had trouble doing so. He was uncomfortable in the car because of the bumps and turns, and when dusk came, he had to switch with Chief because he grew drowsy.
Despite the long ride, they finally made it to Verdall County. Before going to their destination, Brit made a stop at a convenience store. He got out of the car and woke Pangaea and Chief. "Hey, you two!" he said. "I'm going to buy some coffee. The two of you want anything?" he asked. "Are we there yet?" Pangaea asked. "Kinda. I just have to make a few turns and stuff left and we'll be free from the car," Brit responded. Chief yawned a bit. "Coffee sounds good. And how about some noodles?" Chief said. Brit nodded and went into the store.
Inside the store, there were two counters with only one person. The employee was an Ani-man feline. He was playing a game on his laptop as he was wearing a headset, was constantly hissing, and there was the sound of hitting coming from the device. Brit took a look around. He found what they needed and also took a few protein bars. He put that on the opposite counter of the employee and went back to grab some coffees from the coffee machine there. He grabbed it one by one and put it on the counter with the other foods he was going to buy. As he put the last one in, the employee jumped up to his feet and cheered. This made Brit nearly spill the last coffee he was putting in. "WHOO! TAKE THAT MAGENTA MAGES! HAHAHA!" the employee cheered. "WE WON WORKCRAFT MONDAY CHAMPIONSHIPS, BABY!" he continued. Brit got a hold of his balance for the coffee and sighed. He then cleared his throat. "Ahem..."
The employee stopped cheering. He instantly blushed. "Oh... Uhm... sorry... I--uh..." the employee stuttered. Brit laughed. "Don't worry, it'll be our secret," he assured the employee. "How much for all of these?" he asked. "Oh! That will be twenty-five dollars and fifty cents," the employee replied. Brit handed the employee thirty dollars. "Here. Keep the four-fifty to yourself. But please scan it," Brit said. "Oh sorry, our scanner's been broken for ages now. We're waiting for at least one because no one ever goes here that much," the employee replied.
Brit smelled something familiar. He started sniffing the air. "What are you doing?" the employee asked. Brit sniffed more. "Uh dude you're freaking me out," said the employee. Brit then stopped sniffing. "I know that scent!" Brit said. "Do you... or someone else from your family bake bread?"
"Yeah! How can you tell?"
"Do they own a bakery?"
"Yeah! It's just down the street. The best in the county! That's..."
"That smell is from a certain bread that my first-grade teacher used to make. Mrs. Janice has a bakery now?"
"Janice's bakery and pastries! Open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, 24/7! You mentioned you were a student of my aunt?"
"Really?! Hold on!" Brit said. He rushed outside and shouted to Chief. "Hey, Chief! Did you know Mrs. Janice has a bakery now?"
Chief was surprised as well. "Mrs. Janice? Your first-grade teacher? No way!"
"Yeah! This guy right here is her nephew!" Brit said. Chief and Pangaea went inside the store.
"So, Mrs. Aura Janice, is a teacher turned baker?" Pangaea asked.
"Yep! She quit teaching and went with her passion. Eventually, she started a small business and it grew," the nephew of Mrs. Janice said.
"Wait. You said that you moved here when you were in the sixth grade?" Pangaea asked Chief.
"Yeah. But when I moved in, Brit showed me around and made me meet a few people," Chief answered. "So, uh, what's your name again, my guy?" Chief asked the nephew.
"Rhinestone. Everyone calls me Rin," answered the employee.
"So, Rin," Chief asked. "How long is she in the business?"
"About, I guess, twelve years? I'm twenty and I've seen her bakery open and flourish like the Euphrates."
"Wow!" Brit said. He took a sip of coffee and then ate some noodles before asking Rhinestone another question. "Do you help her in any way, Rin?" Brit asked.
"Yeah. I don't take up baking that much but I help her with deliveries from time to time. I'm a Twig Streamer and a Content Creator as well," Rhinestone replied. Everyone else nodded. "So," Rhinestone said. "Are you here for like a reminisce vacation? Just to remember the past?"
"No. We're here for work."
"But what work would anyone have here? The only place that has a place for workers right now is the fire station," Rhinestone said.
"That's why we're here," Chief said.
"Really?"
"Can you guess which of us three will be working?" Chief asked.
Rhinestone answered with no hesitation. "You and her," he answered, pointing to Chief then Pangaea. Pangaea giggled. "I am a chemist and a geologist. I don't work fires," Pangaea said. "Uh, yes you do -- when experiments go wrong," Chief said. All of them laughed. Rhinestone then immediately realized something. He turned to Brit and said, "So, you're saying that you are a firefighter?"
"The first Ani-man firefighter," Brit replied. Rhinestone stood. "You came from here right?" Rhinestone asked.
"Yeah. Why?" Brit asked.
"Oh, my aunt will be excited to hear this," Rhinestone said.
"What? Why?"
"She prepares her pastries and loaves of bread and cakes for visitors. She makes so much for celebrations as well. Especially when it's something as big as this. You're the first firefighting Ani-man plus you came from here!"
"Uh-huh. I don't think she'll throw a party for me actually. I was one of the worst students she had. How would that make her celebrate?" Brit said as he scoffed. As he said that, he saw the truck that carried their belongings. "The truck is here. Well, we'll be going Rin. Send Mrs. Janice our regards," Brit said. They all went out with Brit last to exit the door. Before Brit exited the convenience store, he turned around and looked at Rhinestone. "Hey, Rin," he said. "Is there anyone named Cad here?" he asked. "Sorry. I'm not sure," Rhinestone said. "I rarely go outside. I only go outside for jobs I have like this convenience store. Sorry, again," Rhinestone said. "Okay. Thanks, a lot Rin," Brit replied.
