Korra: Replay

Chapter 8: The Sato's factory (part 2/2)

Chapter 8: The Sato's factory (part 2/2)

Jul 02, 2021

 She hoped Tarrlok was wrong.

Tarrlok gave a signal, and the task force quickly busted inside the Sato factory. Everyone was surprised and terrified. Someone screamed and ran away at the back. She was afraid that they were guilty but then quickly told herself that if someone marched at her place with an army, she would run away too.

He ordered her to lead a group to the next room. She didn’t like doing what he told her, but she needed to stay low for now. Korra wished Tenzin would be here, but the councilmen made an amend between each other. They would not interfere with each other's workforce unless they are invited, and Tarrlok certainly didn’t invite Tenzin.

Korra opened the door and found a group of Lightingbenders who were working with the electrical generators. Mako was one of them. He looked at her in confusion and then switched to anger.

“What are you doing here? And what with all these people?” He growled.

“I’m glad you’re safe,” Korra said. She glanced over her shoulder where the task force was standing, “The factory is suspended. There is a lead that said the owner is working for Amon.” Unless proving otherwise. She thought.

“That’s crazy. Tell your people to leave!” Mako yowled.

She stepped back with hurt, “Why are you angry at me? I’m not the one who in charge.”

“You’re the Avatar!”

After the attack in the Probending game, her friends knew who she is when the second backup came and checked on her. Korra expected they would be mad that she hid away from them, but Mako was extremely angry and she didn't know why. She tried to talk to him, but he avoided her like a plague. Now that they were standing here, maybe she could try to talk to him again. She tried to find a word, but suddenly her vision flickered. Her body was burning, and she could feel smoke on her skin. Korra pressed herself against the wall so she wouldn't fall to the ground.

Someone just shot her with lightning.

The attack was painful, but it didn’t strong enough to kill her. She heard the task force yowled and ran forward, and when her vision came back, they had handcuffed all the employees. She looked around the people in a desperate attempt to find who had shot her. But she didn’t have the answer. She met Mako’s eyes one last time before the task force took him along with the other employees outside. His eyes betrayed nothing.

It wasn’t you, was it Mako? She thought. But it was too late. There was a doubt in her heart. It looked like Mako didn’t see her as a friend anymore. It wouldn’t surprise her if he wants her gone.

Tarrlok soon entered the room, “We still haven’t found Hiroshi Sato. He should be somewhere in the factory.”

“Let slit up,” Korra suggested. She pushed aside the painful burn on her skin, “You check on that side, and I’ll be on this side.” Tarrlok opened his mouth, but Korra didn’t let him a chance to object, “We will find him faster this way and stop him from getting away.” She added.

He thought for a second and nodded. The truth was, she didn’t care if they could find Hiroshi at the moment, all she could think was find evidence and she wouldn’t let Tarrlok get in her way.

Korra called Naga when Tarrlok left the room. She took an electric glove that was collected from the previous attack and let Naga sniffed it.

 “Find the gloves.” She whispered.

The dog put her nose to work and walked in a circle. Korra started to grow hope that Tarrlok’s report was gone and the Sato had nothing to do with Amon. Then Naga left the room. She led Korra to halls after halls like a maze and then stopped at a locked door. Korra swallowed and smacked the door and felt like something had broken inside her.

Hiroshi Sato was working in his office room when his daughter came inside. She dangled a cylinder lunch box and put it on the table.

“You forgot your lunch.” She smiled.

The old man put the paper down and smiled at his daughter, “Thank you, Asami. But do you know I can always book a room in a restaurant?”

“Of course I know,” Asami rolled her eyes, “But mom told me to make sure you always eat home food. She said the restaurant isn’t good enough for you.”

“She was a great chief.” Hiroshi took down his glasses to clean them. He put it back on and looked at the beautiful family picture frame placed on the table. A happy family, he thought.

“You look tired.” Asami noticed the heavy in his eyes, “You have worked a lot these weeks. Maybe you should take a long break. I can take care of the factory for you.”

The man laughed, “You worry too much. I feel fine. In fact, I think I'm too fine that I can work for more than a hundred years.” He winked at his daughter, and she chuckled.

She knew she wouldn't be able to persuade her father so she reached for the door, “I’ll be on my way. But seriously, take some rest.”

 “I will.”

Asami opened the door and almost bumped into Korra.

“Korra? Are you looking for me?” Asami said, but Korra stormed inside and Asami was forced back to the room.

“Hiroshi Sato, you are under arrest for working with Amon,” Korra said in a stern voice.

Asami looked at her in dismay, but Hiroshi started laughing. “Korra, isn’t it? You're must the friend that Asami told me. She talked a lot about you, although she hasn't mentioned your sense of humour.”

“Stop, dad.” Asami blushed, but Korra didn’t break eyes contact with the man.

“Enough Hiroshi. I know you’re working for Amon.” She growled.

Hiroshi raised an eyebrow and walked to the front of the table. Perhaps he didn’t find this funny anymore, “Young lady, I don’t know what game you’re playing, but I can assure you I have nothing to do with those radicals. Did you even have the evidence?”

Korra narrowed her eyes and whistled. Naga appeared at the door and threw a wooden box to the middle of the room. It smacked to the floor and many electrical gloves fell out. Asami gasped.

“These gloves are found in your factory. The same gloves that were used during the rebellion attack.” Korra said.

Hiroshi shrugged, “Someone must have put it in here to frame me. I have a lot of competitors and I won’t surprise if one of them choose a dirty method.”

Korra curled her lip, “Oh, I see. Your competitors must be genius to install the whole electrified weapons industry undergrounds this factory without you know it. Are you done with the lie, or should I drag you there to see for yourself?”

“Dad, what is Korra talking about?” Asami frowned, “you’re not working for Amon, are you?”

Hiroshi put a hand on Asami's shoulder, "Of course not! I will never do such a thing like that! Do you think I’d ever put you at risk for what happened at the Probending game?”

“But you didn’t know I was there on that day."

“Asami, don’t listen to your friends. I have nothing to do with Amon and I don't know why she’s trying to blame me. I’m your father. You should have trusted me.” Hiroshi started to lose his patience. Asami didn’t look at his eyes. She shifted her attention to the ground uncomfortably. Hiroshi frowned but he came to the table and picked up the lunch box, “It's lunchtime. Everyone is properly just hungry. You should take your friend to somewhere with more fresh air. I have somewhere else to go too."

Hiroshi walked to the door, but Korra blocked his way. The old man leered at her rudeness and looked to Asami for her response. But his daughter said nothing.

“Move, or I have to call the security,” Hiroshi warned.

Korra answered him with a stream of fire launching to the wall. The man jumped up in surprise. The wall caught on fire and burnt vigorously and spread to the rest of the walls. The room was quickly surrounded by fire.

“Stop this foolish instantly. I could sue you for damaging private property!” Hiroshi yowled. He tried to threaten her, but Korra knew from the look of his eyes who was the one who afraid. The fire grew bigger and bigger and Korra was blocking the only exit.

Hiroshi picked up an electrical glove.

“Dad, what are you doing?” Asami said in wary.

“If you do not move, I’ll have to use force!” He said, launching himself at Korra, but she easily threw him back. He knocked to the table and smashed everything on it to the floor.

“Do you think I’d stupid enough to bring charged electrical gloves?” Korra said.

“What do you want from me, ash maker?” Hiroshi yowled.

“The truth.” Korra said coldly, “No one will leave this room until I hear the truth. Do you work for Amon?”

Hiroshi flinched and his eyes were widening this time. He looked around the room, trying to think of something. A few pieces of the cell fell near Asami. She yelped and jumped away.

“Fine. Do you want to know the truth? I work for Amon!” He screeched. His voice echoed in the burning room.

 “No, you didn’t.” Asami choked.

“I do.” He glanced at his daughter, then at Korra. His eyes burned with anger. “But do you know why I did it? It’s because of you. People like you! The one who use bending to oppress people who are weaker than yourselves. People like you who think you’re better than anyone, who use force and violence to do what you want. People like you…” His voice was trembling, “People like you took away my wife. Ash maker, you took away my wife. She was gone because of you monsters. I do not regret working with Amon and I hope the rest of you will soon be punished for what you deserve!”

His voice was fiercely like the fire in the room. But also like fire, it quickly died and distinguished. It wasn’t long until the room grew cold. No one said anything. No one tried to move. The room echoed with heavy breathing sounds until the task force found them.

They arrested Hiroshi, as well as Asami, who was suspicious of helping her father. Asami didn’t fight back or say a word.

They all left the room except the Avatar. She stood there like a statue until Naga came and nudged her gently. Korra blinked like she had been restarted. She walked around the room, trying to process what had happened.

There was a sound of broken glass underneath her feet. She found a broken picture frame and picked it up, ignoring the broken glass piercing through her fingers. It must have fallen down from the table. In the picture was a man with glasses, wearing a fancy suit. He stood next to a beautiful woman with dark waving hair. She was hugging a little girl who inherited her mother’s beauty. All three of them were smiling brightly at the camera like they were the happiest family in the world.

 But now they weren't.

Naga whined again. This time Korra heard sirens and people shouting. She put the picture away and finally walked outside.

There was a crowd protested outside the factory. They screamed and shouted at the task force to release the people. She realised they were families and friends of the people who were arrested. And in the crowd, she caught the face of Bolin looked at her before he disappeared among the people.

For her life, she thought she was afraid of silence as how much it reminded the time she lived in the compound by herself. But despite all the people around her and all the noise made her ears bleeding, she had never felt more frightened and alone.

“We got all the rebellions and Hiroshi.” Tarrlok whispered to her, “Today, we won.”

No, we didn’t win. It’s a loss.

It's a beginning of a bigger rift ahead of them.

I thought I'd be able to make it into one part but then I ended up adding too many details, so slip this chapter into 2 parts again because of Tapas word limit.

‘Ash maker’ is a name used to insult Firebender, if you're not familiar with the official Avatar comics.

Also, the task force in this AU does not relate to the police department. It’s a special force that found and lead by individual councilmen/councilwomen. Each member of the council has their own task force, (except Tenzin, who didn’t like building an army.) Not that this information is important to the story, I just find it’s funny to add.
