GREY’S POV:-
I expected her to shudder in fear, or maybe cry. That is the usual reaction of variables when they are told the truth about their destiny.
This girl on the other hand laughed.
Once she heard me saying that World Zero has demons, she covered her mouth and lowered her head. I thought she was crying. So you can imagine my surprise when I heard… giggles?
I watched in surprise as she started with small giggles which turned to full-blown laughter. The look in her eyes and the expression on her face confirmed my suspicions.
“She’s crazy,” I thought to myself.
“Why are you laughing?” I asked.
“I-I don’t know?” She replied.
Yep, she is definitely crazy.
“Can you untie me now?” I asked.
“Sure.” She answered wiping tears of laughter from her eyes.
With a swipe of the knife, the rope was cut a millimetre away from my chest. Who does that? Why couldn’t she just untie the thread? Wasn’t she an amateur at using knives? No, wait, the way she held the knife.
She was no amateur.
The sheer amount of talent in her sent shivers down my spine. But what was that fluctuating mana intensity before?
“You know you’re surprisingly calm during all of this. Most variables are in denial for a long time," I said.
“I have moped around enough till now. What good will come from being in denial? I have work to do.” she replied curtly.
“So what’s your name?” I asked her.
She didn’t reply.
I don’t know why. But she reminds me of her. The strongest and most beautiful soul I ever knew. The kindest person in World Zero. She was my person. The person who saved my life. And…
The person whom I killed.
When I saw the thread, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought I had finally found her, desperately clinging to the hope that she had survived, even when everyone around me told me to give up.
But the girl in front of me was not her. Their appearance was drastically different. The person I was looking for had red hair, light green jewel-like eyes and pale skin. This girl on the other hand had a warmer skin tone, brown hair and normal green eyes.
But the way she talked and her vibe reminded me of her.
“You’ve still not answered my question, what’s your name?” I asked her again.
“I don’t go around telling my name to weirdos,” she replied.
“Fine, suit yourself,” I answered.
I take it back. The crass way she spoke and her annoying vibe was nothing like the one who I am looking for.
My thoughts were interrupted by a phone call. It was Elise. She had set the backyard on fire. Great.
Just another normal day in the life of Grey Kastillo.
“We have to leave now. Do you want to take anything with you?”
“Do I need to take money?”
“No, you’ll be given an allowance there."
“Okay, then just wait I’ll be back.”
As she left the room I glanced back at the pile of papers which was neatly collected and kept on the desk.
She had been kidnapped huh? Just like...that person.
I want to ask her about this but I am worried that I might be crossing the line. After all… we don’t know each other. I shook my head. It is not like me to be curious about others. I had stopped caring ever since that tragedy, and I wasn’t going to start now.
I’ll just escort her to World Zero orientation and then leave. I won’t be seeing her again.
Little did I know.
“Hey! Weirdo!” said the variable. I didn’t hear her because I was lost in my thoughts.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and freaked, almost as if I had forgotten that I was in World Seven.
I instinctively pulled out my sword and swung it back.
“Who the hell-?” I asked as I turned back.
It was the variable. I made a mistake, shit.
Living on edge in World Zero had made me suspicious of every unknown presence near me.
Upon closer look, my eyes widened as I realised.
She countered it? At that speed? With a knife?
“Woah, someone is touchy today.” She said without batting an eye.
“I-I’m sorry,” I said flustered, as I sheathed my sword and returned it to the cavalry using magic. Was she pissed? I mean duh. I mean I would be too if someone randomly swung a sword at me.
“Should we leave now?” She asked putting on her backpack.
“Yes,” I replied.
She started walking towards the door.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“We are leaving, right?”
“That’s not how you get to World Zero.”
“Oh. Then how?”
“Like this,” I answered, turning towards the mirror in the corner of the room.
The variable looked at me with a very puzzled expression and I almost laughed out loud.
“We leave… through the… mirror?” She asked, in an unsure tone.
“Yes,” I replied.
“But… how?” She asked walking to the mirror and putting her hand on the glass. “It is rock solid.”
“You just need to ask nicely,” I replied.
“Ask whom?”
“Who else? Your reflection of course."
