Letter To No Where

Slimes are slugs, not food.

Slimes are slugs, not food.

Jul 09, 2021

After walking for close to an hour, with the sun barely moving at all. The wandering group comes to a gate with large stone walls on either side. Two guards were standing staring out at the road they were steadily making their way up.

Stephan walks up to them and with a smooth voice greets the guards. “Hail and well met!” He is met with a look-up confusion as to the guard's exchange looks. The guard on the left says “Hello. May I see your papers?”

The group all glance between themselves not knowing what to do now. Sara whispers into the wind so only the party hears her say “System do you happen to have papers or identification for us in this world?”

- Other worlders do not have identification. You will need to get it at your earliest convenience. -

They see a small smile emoji appear in front of them. Sara looks disappointed and just huffs out a “Well that was not helpful at all” She turns to Stephan and shrugs "The system has nothing for us" She explains as Stephan tilts his head in question.

“We don't come from a place that has identification, isn't there some way to work with that?” He awkwardly jumbles through his words. He rubs a hand at the base of his neck lifting his hair a little showing off the tip on a tattoo leading down his back.

“You must have come from the poorer farming towns. Your clothes give it away a little.” He gestures to all of the party as he assesses them for any dangers they present. With a nod, he says “Harold, lead these young vagrants to the guild. They usually take on cases like these.” He waves at the tall humanoid on the right. Everything about him seems human aside from the pale hue of green his skin gives off.

He waves for them to follow as he starts heading into town. They pass the town market, with shops and stalls. Sara looks at some of the food stalls and sees vegetables she wouldn't even know where to begin using.

The town is lively with kids running around, and people shopping for their daily wares. Sara Hears a dog barking. She turns to see its lead by a humanoid person walking a dog. Sara stares a little too long for comfort at the lady running past as her butterfly wings fluffer as she runs. Percy nudges her and says "From personal experience. Staring always feels uncomfortable."

They continue seeing the sights as their lead to a large building with a large sign on the front saying -Adventurers Guild-.

The guard opens the large doors. They all enter to see a hall with large bench-style tables in the middle, a billboard with numerous pages each depicting similar wording. A price, A description, and a Picture on some. The place smells of sweat and beer. Parties are huddled around the room. Chatting to one another and drinking Large mugs of beer.

Sara follows the others as they walk up to an information desk with a small girl with ram horns and a tuff of pink hair. She greets them cordially with a smile and waves and asks "Are you looking to register?"

Herald, the guard, is the one to answer  "They need to either register or just get identification. Do you think your scanner thingy pull their records for us?"  He gesticulates with his hands as he speaks, trying to mime out the item he's thinking of.

Stephan pipes up at that point and says "We were hoping to join. Is that ok?" He seems sheepish at the end like he didn't mean to step in.

The lady pulls out a small device. a flat slate of rock is placed on the countertop. She waves a hand over it with a small amount of white light illuminating the palm of her hand. The slate comes to life displaying a hand insignia with a foreign language printed across it.

"Please place your hand on the rock to start the process." The lady says as she gestures elegantly with her hand to the device.

Stephan shrugs and puts his hand on the slate, the slate illuminating for a few seconds then turning red. Stephan cries out and tries to pull his hand back. A slim card is dispensed from the bottom of the slate.

After the glowing stops, he gets to pull his hand away from the slate. He looks at his hand turning it over to see pinpricks on each of his fingers. A small amount of blood is left on the slate itself. The lady takes out a rag and cleans it away as Stephan picks up the card to look closer.

The small black card showing a distinct lack of anything important just basic information. The things they all notice being out of place are the age being 5 hours old, and the more fantasy items like current mana and Spell List.

"Why does it say I'm 5 hours old? I'm 27." He asks Looking at the card oddly.

Sara glances over Stephans's shoulder to see what he's asking about. She immediately gets curious about her information and says "I would like to go next!" Sticking her hand in the air.

The lady gestures to the slate and says "Then you may put your hand here and begin the process." She finishes with a smile.

Sara places her hand on the device. She feels the pins slide into her fingers and her hand seizes in place as the slate lights up again. knowing whats happening prepared her enough, she held her ground through the whole thing. A white card is dispensed at the bottom. Sara grabs it and looks it over. She gets lost in thought as she examines the information. It all checks out with what she put in during the character creation, the only thing off is the age. "5 hours old." she thinks to herself. "Does this mean my previous life no longer matters?"

As she gets lost in thought Percy and Rosa both take their turns. Percy gets a purple card and Rosa gets a green. One both having the same age issue on it.

The lady and Herald look over the cards. Neither seeming to understand what their seeing. "Claire, do you mind going and getting the guild master?" The lady, now named Claire, Nods slowly and leaves.

They all stand in an awkward silence that blankets the area. They all stand shifting from foot to foot, waiting.

A few moments pass when Claire comes back. She is joined by a taller lady who looks like she could be related to claire but her hair is long in a neat braid.

"Hello, my name is Susan. May I ask why you would like to join my guild, and please be honest." She asks the moment she gets close enough to not shout.

Sara looks at the rest of them and answers "We need to find out how we got here. Some of us want to go home and the others just want to move on." She looks Susan dead in the eyes as she says this.

"I see," Susan says with a less serious face than before. "This will be our first time with an otherworlder in our guild but let me be the first to invite you in."

Susan holds out her hand to Stephan and gives a firm shake with hard eyes " You will be expected to work as hard as the other people who got into this guild. Due to circumstances, you will be given a bit more time before the cut-off period. You have 3 months to reach level 20 to remain in this guild."

She lets go then turns and walks out back up the stairs she came from. The party stands in stunned silence, Percy lets out a sigh of relief and slouches to a more relaxed position.

Claire turns to them all and asks "Where will you be staying tonight? The inn is 6 coppers a room." She smiles at them but it's obvious she has a plan in mind behind a well-maintained expression.

Silence is heard across the group as they shift a little. Claire cuts in before it gets too awkward and says "There's a mission that should be only a 2-hour job available. It doesn't pay much so no one has taken it, but it should get you enough to figure out tonight's stay." She claps her hands and when they separate a small scroll appears in the middle of them.

She hands the scroll over to Stephan and the group crowds around him trying to get a look at it.

Mission!
Kill the 12 slimes.
Location West Woods.
Bring back the cores.
Pay 45 coppers.

The mission looks all together really simple. They all nod and Stephan says "We will take it."

Branches and other foliage from the forest break under their feet as they run through the woods looking for a 5th slime. Armed with large sticks and a small rusty knife. It's going on one hour out in the woods, with only 5 cores to show for it.

"Can we slow down?!" Rosa says as she struggles to keep up. "they're not gonna get away, they act a lot like slugs."

Stephan slows down and says "I just want to go to sleep at this point. Sorry, we can slow down." The other two slow down with him.

They continue walking through the forest looking for slimes. Sara wanders a little away from the group as she checks out some plants. In particular, that looks like a weird version of an aloe vera plant.

She examines the plant and then says "Appraisal." Getting a small text box in return. Telling her about the plant. What its name, what its main use is, and bullet facts about how to harvest it. Deciding she liked the results, she picks the plant as its recommended. She digs her fingers into the ground and taking roots with them. After shaking the dirt out of the roots she places it on the ground.

At this point, her party notices her absence and has walked over. Percy asks "is it useful or something?" to which they get a nod in response. Sara makes quick work of forming her cape into a poorly tied bag. She starts uprooting and placing the plants inside.

Standing up and brushing off the dirt and dust from her knees, she says "Right let's keep going." She starts walking off. The rest following her with a confused look on their faces.

The night carries on like this for a bit. The party finding slime here and there. The eleventh slime appears with twelve and with little fan fair rosa takes her stick and slams it down into the slime making it explode on entry. Stephan doing the same thing.

Picking up the cores they all look relieved and start walking back to the guildhall. They completed their first quest.

After stopping by the guildhall and accepting the reward they arrive at the inn exhausted. Percy and rosa are hanging on to each other trying to stay standing.

The lady behind the counter looks up and exclaims "Oh my! let me get you some water." As she rushes away they realize just how much they had done that day without drinking much or eating at all. The tiredness of the day starts to really set in.

When the lady comes back with four cups of water, they drink it back happily and release a sigh of refreshment when it's over.  Sara asks how much a room with 4 beds costs.

The lady responds with "twelve coppers should do us straight." she takes the money as it's handed to her and hands over four keys with the number fourteen on each of them. "Breakfast is at eight, make sure to get some sleep. Let me know if you need anything at all." She then gestures down the hall to the left.

When they get to their room Percy all but flops into their claimed bed. Rosa doing much of the same but with more dignity. Stephan lays down and closes his eyes immediately leaving only Sara awake.

Sara looks around the room with a candle illuminating the area she takes the horribly makeshift pouch off and puts it aside. She sits on the bed and thinks about how much her life changed in one day.

Laying back on the bed she shuts her eyes. How her day started is how it ends with the milk light of moon shining down. Sleep overtakes her swiftly after that.

When you get a popup on your computer at 3 am, say no. The world you knew may very well cease to exist and you get a iceberg of new issues while you enjoy the sugar on top.

An Isakai novel that I've been wanting to write in my free time, not serious publishing. It won't have a happy ending for all the characters, and it's my first time writing something longer then a school project. There's till be LGBTQA+ themes and no harem trope.
