In front of them is a meadow and in the distance you can see a dense forest, a road full of stone statues, some as tall as canopies, others smaller. Some looked derformed and others even normal. It depends on what kind of look you see the word you normally see. They walked slowly, watching every move. Some could see where their stomachs were when they came to the statues, each at least half a meter taller than them, and some twice or three times taller. They tried to avoid each statue, but had to move some. It took at least three of them to slowly erect a statue that looked like a petrified knight in the color of black ash with an open helmet, but with a gap instead of a face. Every time they moved they breathed faster, their pulse could be heard, they beat on their faces, their hands began to tremble even more, they felt as if some force was on their body which made it difficult to move. they began to sweat and breathe hard, Bogdan turned behind him for a second and saw that they had passed just about halfway across the meadow. They advanced cautiously until they came close to the forest. The voices became more frequent and louder and louder. Dejan pulled the bowstring so hard that it almost broke. Just a little more and they reached their goal. Then something was heard from the bushes, everyone stopped and looked in that direction, the sweat from his forehead dropped to his lips as they watched it and then a loud voice was heard. Bogdan thought of all sorts of creatures that could jump out as he waited inevitably. There was more and more rustling and something flew out. Before they could see what Dejan had fired an arrow and by the voice of something heavier falling to the floor, he seemed to have hit it. They approached it and picked it up.
"There is a good two and a half kilograms in this pigeon, a good shot Dejan." Neven whispered.
Dejan nodded and a finger in front of his lips and Neven understood. They took out an arrow and put the pigeon on the sleigh and continued. They looked up and saw the canopy at a height as far as the eye could see. They inspected the area for some signs of life and when they were convinced that everything was clean they took out a long side saw, on which there was even rust and an old ax that looked older than Bogdan. Goran took the ax and swung it at the tree, removing a small piece of bark. It echoed through the woods, the flight of birds from the canopy and some animals from the bushes could be heard. Something that scared some animals so easily could easily attract some and everyone knew it. Bogdan could see some shadows running from tree to tree, he didn't know if they were real or his imagination was playing with him. Every blow made him see more and more. It looked too real but he saw nothing concrete but shadows and the rustling of the wind. Is it perhaps too fast for his eyes, now he began to imagine some slender monster with thin legs and blades instead of arms and a lot of similar variants. Every second was an eternity, sweat trickling down his entire body and dripping down the leaves. He turned and saw that Goran had cleared the circle of the tree bark and started to hollow it out. > Gods! I'm going to die before something attacks.< He thought to himself as he looked at the others and they felt the same way. A blow and a blow like a clock ticking when it dies. TIK TAK TIK TAK. Time passed slowly but it passed. He lost track of how long they had stood there, before he left his two angels, they had about ten minutes, an hour, an hour, two. He really didn't know.
"Dejan, I'm done. Grab the other end of the saw. ” Goran whispered.
Bogdan turned and saw a hollow in the tree where he could lie.
"Everyone on the other side." Bogdan whispered.
Only Neven was on his side and the two of them crossed to the other side of the tree. Goran and Dejan put the saw in the small hole that Goran had prepared on the opposite side of the recess and started pushing it forward, backward, forward, backward, forward, backward. It was a little easier for everyone because they would soon be able to get out of the woods. Slowly, Bogdan saw fewer and fewer shadows, and time passed faster. Only through the woods could one hear the sawing of trees, nothing more, as if they were in some bubble of reality where only they exist, but now something began to shoot.
"TIMBER!" Dejan said a little louder.
The giant tree began to creak and tilt more and more. It was heard passing through the canopy and tearing the air at high speed and it fell. Something was heard breaking through something and everyone quickly went to see what had happened. The tree fell on a statue that pierced through the entire trunk of the tree, only its shoulders and head protruding. They started sawing before the statue as before.Slowly but surely, they broke through the tree more and more, their hands were already bleeding as much as they did, especially Goran’s. Then everyone froze in place because they heard the worst possible sound they could hear. Howling wolf. They all threw down their tools and gathered so that everyone was touching their backs as they listened to the crackling of branches and leaves all around them. They were surrounded and knew it was an alpha sign to attack. The fear in them disappeared and he was overwhelmed by the will to survive.
"There are about twenty of them." Dejan said.
"WHAT! So much ?! We can barely go against ten! Where are the coyotes when you need them? The situation in the forest has worsened, so we have to go back to the village! ” Bogdan said.
"We have no choice." Goran said.
"I'm sorry I hate it when Kalin is right. We're in heavy shit now. " Neven said.
The rustling intensified and the gray wolf flew out of the bushes and rushed towards them. Bogdan and Dejan fired an arrow and both hit the wolf right in the forehead, but the wolf did not slow down, it seemed that it did not bother him at all. He was very close, every second he could already be on them. They fired another row of arrows and hit him again in the bloody head and this time he fell and slipped right next to them. Wolf's lying corpse was up to Bogdan's shoulder. They quickly put him lying in front of them like some kind of obstacle.
“This is a scout, get ready! If we all don't come back, Kalin will fill my head!” Bogdan shouted to calm and motivate them.
They laughed a little and adjusted for a slightly lighter head fight. The crackling accelerated and the wind started to blow harder, they couldn't know where the next one would jump out from so they just waited and moved slowly towards the village, the peace didn't last. Two are on the right and one is on the left. Bogdan fired an arrow and hit the wolf in the forehead as he jumped over his friend's corpse. As the first one did not slow down, Bogdan fired another one, hitting him in the chest. He didn't slow down and already jumped to bite Bogdan on the head, but Neven sliced him with a sword while he was in the air and he fell to the floor with a squeal and Neven finished him off with a blade through his skull. Dejan fired an arrow to the right and hit the same in the forehead, and hit the other in the paw and that slowed down the wolf. The left one had already jumped on him and Goran was going to do the same as Neven, but another one jumped out of the bushes above them and Dejan did not manage to react to the uninvited guest in time because he was occupied with the left wolf. He managed to avoid being bitten on the head but he bit him between the neck and shoulders and started pulling him towards the lower bush. Dejan yelled and resisted with all his might, he even managed to stab the wolf's arrow in the eye. Blood flew everywhere, but the wolf kept running, only slowing down a little for a second. The arrow flew and hit him in the thigh and Dejan screamed even harder when the wolf bit harder from the pain. Dejan fell to the floor, barely moving and bleeding terribly. The wolf turned with his red teeth and before he could do anything, Neven's sword cut his upper skull in half and the wolf fell to the floor with his sword. Neven was going to draw his sword when the right wolf jumped on him from behind, Bogdan fired an arrow, but it hit him in the butt. Neven fell to the floor and squirmed and pushed with the wolf that was on him, but grabbed his arm. Neven yelled from all heels and hit him on the head with his long hand, and before the left one could finish him off, Goran stabbed him in the head with a sword and fell dead on Neven. Neven could not get out from under the corpse weighing about one hundred and fifty kilograms, so with the help of Goran he managed to get out. He held on to the hand that was missing most of his fingers, blood dripping down his entire arm, but he gritted his teeth and ignored it. They both ran to Dejan who was barely moving, when they reached him they were surprised he had not fainted. The wolf bit off the whole part he was dragging behind him and he was losing blood very quickly. Goran tore off his sleeve and began trying to somehow stop the bleeding.
"More are coming!" Bogdan yelled as he stood behind them, watching out for more uninvited guests.
Neven also rolled up his sleeve and tied his sword to his bloody hand and shouted:
"Let's run away while they're gone!"
Goran and Neven grabbed Dejan and started running, and Bogdan was right behind them. It wasn't long before they heard and saw a wolf running after them. There was some distance between them, but they were much slower. They had to stop how to defend themselves. Bogdan fired an arrow, but missed. "Why now of all possible times." He said into his chin and fired another that hit him in the chest. The wolf jumped and Neven did the same as before, but this time too weakly. The wolf whimpered and bit his other arm. Neven yelled and somehow managed to cut the wolf through the throat. The wolf fell and Neven managed to pull out the missing hand and they looked behind where two more were running.
"Run, you fools, I'll keep them!"
Bogdan didn't have time to say anything before Neven started yelling and running towards them. He grabbed Dejan by the shoulders and they started running. The howls of wolves and Neven's yeels could be heard. Two things fell to the floor. They didn’t know which ones and they just kept running. They walked around the statues and heard them running after them, they knew Neven was gone. >First Mirko and Stjepan, and now he too. Everyone dies because of my incompetence and my decisions. I can't stand this anymore, so many good people. How? How do I proceed? How do I stand in front of them more? I have to calm down. I have to survive because my life doesn’t just belong to me. It belongs to my two angels! Some stupid beasts won't steal it from them! <
Bogdan started yelling and then Goran joined too, he thought he heard a whimper behind him, but most likely his brain was playing with him again. Arrows flew over their heads, the village was right in front of them. The wall no longer looked nearly destroyed but like an impenetrable fortress. He squealed behind him and saw the wolves retreat. >They got scared, finally salvation.< The door opened and they burst in. Obrvko closed the door immediately behind them. Kalin came down quickly and looked at them and asked:
"Where's Neven?" Kalin asked.
No one said a word but Goran lowered Dejan to the floor and began to stop the bleeding.
Obrvko jumped to the rescue, they did what they could, they couldn't do much, but the bleeding slowed down. Bogdan approached Kalin and started talking:
"Kalin, Neven is-"
"SHUT UP! Don't tell me that! He doesn't tell me that he fought to the very end, because I know he did, because there is no more stubborn person than him! ”
"Calm down K-"
“I WILL NOT CALM DOWN! IF you had listened to me none of this would have happened, and who would have listened to me! Because of your decision, I will never see h-h-him again now! ”
As soon as he said that, he burst into tears and Bogdan hugged him.
"I can't do without him, I won't! I do not know how! He was always by my side! Svarog, why are you doing this to me! ”
"Everyone will miss them all. This village will not be the same without them. ”
"A-a-a-and how did he go?"
"Like a real hero, he saved us all there."
"Of course he left like that. He always thought of others rather than himself. ”
While they were talking, Goran and Obrvko managed to stop the bleeding and disinfected the wound, but Dejan was unconscious, but he was breathing, barely. Now they began to think how to ensure that their friend would survive, the wound wasn’t quite that deep, but they didn’t know how serious it was. They took him to his house and Kalin and Bogdan went to join them when:
TUD! TUD! TUD!
