It is almost an hour wait before Cailin and Finley's row is finally called up. Cailin follows after his friend as he walks up the aisle towards the doors, where teachers hold them open. Finley quickly gets behind another person, the brunette quickly filing in behind him, and the line begins to tread down the stairs.
They get down to the first floor, nothing but the soft noise of pattering feet bouncing across the walls. All the scholars are silent, but the looks they pass each other are ones of awe and excitement. Finley and Cailin can barely wait themselves.
They make their way down the final set of stairs. The now tunnel shaped hallway is so large, that the slap of feet echo loudly down the corridor. Torches are the only light source, flickering quietly, and leaving shadows along the walls. Finley stares at all the shadows, mesmerized, and tracing his finger over all the symbols etched into the concrete from a long time ago. Finley wants to know the meaning of all these symbols he keeps seeing but forces himself to trudge on, and not get left behind.
The sound of dripping water can be heard as their part of the group comes to a clearing. The entire tunnel breaks open into a large circular space, stalactites drooping from the ceiling, where water falls into the large pond down below them. The scholars walk along the bridge, Finley and Cailin feeling the cave walls in awe. Finley does not understand how someone can build all of this, even with the use of magic, and how it can still be keeping itself together.
They make it to the end of the bridge, entering another large tunnel entrance as the beautiful pond disappears from view. Another hallway with more etchings and symbols appears as the croons and huffs from the female Universe Dragons can be heard. The boys smile as they hear all the noises the creatures make, meaning the females are all talking and having sweet conversations with one another. Universe Dragons are very social creatures, but since the females are stowed away down in the basement, it is important for them to have friends of their own kind, so they do not get lonely. But of course, the council members keep them company as well.
Finley would often find this part of the KSDL to be the most important part. Overall, the dragons are what make “King's School for Dragon Leaders” so magical. Dragons are like the grandparents to everyone involved with this school. There are five females, and five males. The council members' dragons are used solely for reproducing. Their dragons are full adults that progressed successfully to powerful level 10 creatures.
Universe Dragons are incredibly wise, and completely aware of their surroundings. They personally know every one of the school’s habitants and can be incredibly sweet. They love children and humans overall. They are incredibly gentle beings, especially the females. The males are the ones that truly get to roam freely, for the females are cooped up in their own rooms in the basement, getting ready for the birth of newborn dragons. They are constantly being taken care of. Female Universe Dragons are treated with the highest respect. They are the ones that keep the school thriving.
When it comes to training young dragons, it is possible for them to reach the level 10 stage. But only the council members have been able to do this. For the thousands of years that this school has been known, none of the children, and or scholars, have been able to get their creatures to reach a level 10. It is possible, but hard. You must be just as skilled as your dragon yourself to be able to get your creature to level up. Universe Dragons have been walking around the halls ever since he was still in diapers. They have been watching and monitoring him, and the other kids, as they grew up. When the males are ready, they go to the females and tell them everything. The females then get to decide whether or not you are ready to take care of their own children.
Which comes back to how special Finley thinks the scholars themselves are. This is what the KSDL is built for. To give children that are given away by their parents a chance to mean something. A chance to wield incredible power, and to grow up around magic, fun, and mystery.
The scholars turn a right corner, and the tunnel breaks off again. Their surroundings suddenly spread out, making another gigantic circular room. Blankets and pillows and all sorts of other comfy objects are sorted along the floors. Stalactites hang from a small portion on the ceiling like a chandelier, dripping water into a small drinking pond.
The female Universe Dragons are scattered around the room. The beautiful multichrome creatures are all awake and smiling as they stretch their wings. They welcome the scholars into their home.
Finley and Cailin's eyes are wide as they stare at the females, noticing how much bigger and bulkier they seem to be than the males. The females also have bigger wing spans, with spikes along their tails.
One female notices the boys, eyes widening. She croons excitedly, getting up on all fours to waddle over to them. She shrinks down to an appropriate size, Finley's eyes staying wide in fascination. Cailin smiles and pets along the creature’s cheek, the blonde soon following suit on the other cheek as the dragon puffs at them.
"Down, girl," Dahlia commands softly, smiling lovingly at her dragon as the creature backs up. The council member then motions for the two boys to continue walking.
Finley forces his mouth to stay shut as he turns to give Cailin an excited look, which he matches, before they enter yet another large room that is very warm. This time, the room is one filled with eggs. This portion of students all walk around the eggs, staying close to the walls as the petite Rayden stands in the middle, a smile on his face.
The doors soon shut, leaving the scholars with three other council members, and a room filled with baby dragons. "Thank you for your patience, young leaders. You all have done very well. If you look around me, you will see that all these dragon eggs have tags on them,” he begins, voice lowered to a whisper.
He gestures around himself with his smile growing. "These tags have your names on them. Whichever tag has your name on it, that’s your dragon. Once you find it, you may quietly leave the room and walk back the way you came to your dorms, where your nannies should be waiting to dress you up for the gala. Any questions?"
Scholars shake their heads, smiles all around, and Rayden nods. "Very well. Be careful where you step, please, and you may whisper. Now go and get your egg."
The scholars all immediately begin to take cautious steps around the eggs, all of them looking at the tags. Cailin and Finley search together, the blonde’s arm looping through his best friend's as they both search each egg that are about the size of a backpack.
"Want to have a bet on who will find their egg first?" Cailin whispers, and Finley rolls his eyes.
"No."
"I know it was a stretch—"
"Found mine." Cailin stops, turning to look at Finley as he smiles excitedly.
He picks up an egg. "I guess we should have betted huh?" He asks, and Cailin glares.
"How the heck did you find yours so fast?!"
"Well, if mine is right here, yours should be somewhere close to it. These council members have a way of putting us together."
Cailin shrugs, nodding. "Yeah, probably."
"I'll wait for you."
Once they both have found their dragon eggs, Finley and Cailin walk back the way they came together. They smile up at the females as they all croon lovingly at finally being able to see them in person. As the council members have stated before, their mates love to talk about them.
They hurry back along the bridge with a few other students, taking the elevator back up to their dorms. Once they get there, they split, saying goodbye to each other, and Cailin knocks on the door with his foot.
Sarah immediately opens it, eyes wide as she takes in the silver shiny egg in Cailin's hands. "Oh my god, you got one," she whispers, coming in close. Her brother rolls his eyes. "Can I please hold it?!" She asks immediately, as Cailin walks past her into his dorm. In the dining room, Christine is waiting patiently.
"Absolutely not. I wouldn't trust you with a pet turtle." He sets the egg down at the dining room table, where his mother sits, to rest his arms.
Sarah hurriedly follows after him, groaning. "Oh, come on, Cay! I wouldn't break something that holds a living creature inside! It's like holding a baby!"
Cailin squints his eyes at his sister. "It is a baby."
Sarah rolls her eyes, defeated. She slumps into a chair and nanny Christine stands. "Congratulations, Cailin. You've earned it."
The brunette grins at his mother as she walks around the table to get a better look at the egg. "I never thought I would see the day,” she mumbles. She crosses her arms before sighing. "Alright, I have a small corner in your room where I have set up heating lamps and blankets. You can set it in there. I have to get you both ready for the gala."
Sarah claps her hands excitedly. "Maybe I’ll meet my soulmate today, mother!" She states, and Cailin huffs a laugh as Christine shrugs.
"There's always a possibility. Now, go on. Hide away the egg and shower up, both of you."
Cailin picks up his egg a second time, huffing with how heavy it is. He begins his tread back to his room, Sarah heading into her own. The brunette pushes his door open, walking in, and seeing a small corner where blankets and pillows are set up like a nest. The heating lamps are hung over the space. Funny enough, the scholars that Christine painted on his walls have their wands facing up in the corner, making it look like the egg has a crown when the brunette sets it down.
He stands up straight, setting his hands to his hips as he smiles down at his new present. Cailin does not know how he will survive waiting an entire year for the egg to hatch, but he will just have to be patient.
With that thought, Cailin turns towards his bathroom and begins a quick shower, coming out to see yet another tux on his bed. This time, it is one that is black with purple swirls, which reminds the scholar of something similar. The council members must have made the students' clothes for tonight's gala to match their wands.
Cailin looks down at the odd tux, before shrugging, and putting it on. He sets his wand in the outside pocket, before opening his bedroom door. He walks into the living room where Christine waits.
"Sit down on the floor facing away from me," she commands, and her son does what she says. The nanny messes with his hair for a few minutes, before letting him go.
"Can I go to Finley's?" Cailin asks, and Christine hesitates before giving a nod. The brunette grins, standing, and hurrying towards the door. "I'll see you at the gala!"
"Behave, and make sure to watch your sister when she gets there!" Christine yells, before the door closes.
