Wings | SID Book 1

6.2: Infirmary

6.2: Infirmary

Jul 13, 2021

The nurse had taken one look into Sampson's eyes, then down at the girl in his arms, and promptly excused herself. It had barely been five minutes since Samson had laid Aliya down on the tiny cot in the dorms empty infirmary when Jessamine barged into the room, unceremoniously, pulled back the curtains and spoke.

"Hey boss, You're going to want to hear about this. We found-" then Jesse turned, saw the girl, and her eyebrows raised. "Oh, that's..."

"Jane found you, I presume," Samson said.

"Oh, he found us. Had some interesting info of his own, that I see was, accurate?" She asked.

Samson still hadn't taken his eyes away from the girl, though he neither confirmed nor denied the statement.

"Intel, Jesse," Samson said after a moment of silence.

"Yeah, intel." Then they went silent again. Samson turned his head to look Jesse in the eyes and raised a single eyebrow. "Right, sorry. The room."

That's right, thought Samson. The room, the case, the recently departed Sandra Nguyen. Samson had found his mate, the other half of his soul, while working on a murder case.

A case he was still working on. A case with a victim, a young girl, who had died in this building. Samson sucked in a deep breath, grounding himself with his mate's scent. The backs of his knuckles brushed across the girl's high cheekbones, his fingertips drifted down her button nose, he traced the soft skin above her full upper lip before he lifted his hands away from the miracle laying before him, dressed in skinny jeans and a cropped jacket. Then he turned and gave the witch his full attention.

"Jess," she repeated, his tone even, his eyes on his subordinate.

"Magic," Jesse blurted.

"Magic?" Samson's eyes narrowed minutely before his features smoothed out into his usual stoicism.

"Yeah, boss. The dorm, there are traces of magic." Jesse said.

Samson looked squarely at the witch.

"This building? The occupants."

"Completely mundane. Supes here have a few separate dorm buildings..." Jess trailed off.

"But there were traces of magic in Sandra's dorm room." It was a statement, not a question.

"That's not the half of it, it wasn't black magic, like dark magic, but it certainly wasn't light."

"What, grey magic?" Sampson asked. Jess just shrugged.

Samson mulled over the implications in his head, before nodding once, slowly at Jesse. "Well, this just got more complicated."

"Yeah, boss, and a hell of a lot more interesting."

"I suppose we'll be staying then. Call Marcelle, get us sorted. Timeframe indefinite, we'll be here a while."

Because what had started as a political maneuver, had officially become an SID case. And those were never simple.

Head of the Supernatural Investigative Division, Samson Gale has better things to do with his time than babysit police detectives on a Mundane case. But when this seemingly magicless murder turns out to be more than it appears, it's up to him and his team to find the serial killer and put a stop to the deaths. If he happens to get to spend more time with his newly discovered soulmate while on the job? Well, that’s a bonus he won't pass up.

Aaliyah Sera is always happy to help the police out from time to time if it means flying under the supernatural radar, and earning some much-needed cash while she's at it. However, she quickly discovers that no matter how used to the supernatural she is, nothing could have prepared her for Sampson Gale.

Together, Sampson and Aaliyah, set out into the dangerous and wonderful world of the supernatural as they work to find the killer. But a murder investigation is no easy place to start a relationship. As the stakes get higher, and tensions rise, will the pressure pull them apart? Or will adversity bring them together as they work to stop the mysterious, mystical murderer.
