"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."― Roald Dahl
He was transfixed at the spot drinking in the sight of her, her every movement making his heart quiver in his chest. When their eyes met his breath stuck in his throat, he felt his soul left his body and was floating in the air trying to reach her. His legs moved on his own accord, his face adorning the brightest smile and his watering eyes, all of his emotions displayed on his handsome face.
Hannah stood there gaping at him while he made his way toward him as nothing else existed in the world other than them. Their breath mingled, eyes boring into each other, and before anyone could think his lips were on hers and the fire they squashed before consumed them in one sweep. His lips moved over hers holding her face lovingly in his palms while her hands grabbed his arms trying to melt into him completely.
They poured their heart into the kiss, everything they feel trying to communicate with a single kiss. The longing, the affection pouring out of them in waves. They lived a lifetime in a single kiss and they didn't want to let each other go but their lungs protested from the lack of air.
They stood for a long time their forehead touching each other, their breath's coming out ragged. The clock struck at midnight indicating the end of Christmas eve and the beginning of Christmas day.
"Merry Christmas," He whispered.
"Merry Christmas," She said chuckling.
Her blue eyes met his obsidian orbs twinkling with the water in them reminding her of the night sky adorned with stars. She loved it and moved involuntarily to kiss him again. It was slow and exploring, her arms tightening around his neck while he pulled her closer by her waist.
They were still standing in the middle of the ballroom, none of them wanted to come out of the blissful dream.
"Did you not come to the celebration?" He asked thanking his stars that she was still in his arms and haven't shoved him aside.
"No, milord," She said softly.
Maybe it was the midnight magic that kept them falling in love with each other.
"Oliver, call me Oliver," He pleaded.
She stayed silent for a long time and he was afraid she will pull away and reject him again.
"Oliver," She whispered, her entire being shuddering and he engulfed her in a tighter embrace.
Her head rested on his chest listening to his thundering heartbeats while his hands caressing her back sent tremors through her. His eyes closed involuntarily breathing her deeply.
"Dance with me," He said his eyes still closed.
"I don't know how to," She said her voice muffled in his chest.
He untangled himself from her and stepped away, while she looked adorable with the look of surprise on her face.
"Let's teach you then," He said bowing in front of her.
She followed his lead and curtsied. They stepped toward each other never looking away from each other eyes. Their palms were a mere inch from each other but never touching. They did a full circle and bowed again. Oliver took her hand in his own while directing her other hand to his shoulder, while he lightly held her waist.
"Match my steps," He said and she focused on his feet trying to imitate him.
"You should look in my eyes," He whispered.
"How will I match the steps if I look up?" She asked innocently her eyes still fixed on his feet.
"You will. Trust me," He said confidently.
She looked up into his eyes.
"I might step on your foot," She said pouting.
"My foot can handle it," He said chuckling
"But it will be easier if I mimic your steps," She said still pouting.
"I want you to enjoy it," He said pulling her close.
"But.." She protested.
"If you speak another word I will kiss you," he said seriously, "again." He added after a pause.
Her face exploded with blush, from the tip of her ears to her rosy cheeks to her collarbone and he suppressed the urge to nibble and leave her neck with love marks.
They danced to the music of air and the silence of the night, their hearts beating like the drums, the fairy tale coming to life. They danced till their feet couldn't move anymore, they danced to their heart content.
"It is late," Hannah said as the last candle flickered before they were surrounded by complete darkness.
Oliver grabbed her hand tugging her towards him, signaling her to follow him. She thought for a moment and stepped toward him. They quickly made it through the darkened corridors and stood in front of his door. She hesitated, her hand slipping from his. The look of worry crossing her face.
"Hannah," He called out, "Trust me."
The spell started to break up, the magic was being lifted but his sincerity tugged on her heartstrings and she entered his chamber.
He sat her down on the chair in front of the fire while he threw his waistcoat on his bed. She was looking around trying to calm herself, forcing down the dread that threatened to swallow her whole. She reminded herself he is a gentleman, she trusts him. She trusts him. But should she? The memory from the carriage ride tried to break all the remaining magic.
He sat down on the floor in front of her, looking up at her with the affection in his eyes making her demons to retreat in the corner.
"Hannah," He whispered.
"Yes," She said gulping.
"I want you to do something for me tonight," He said hopefully.
Her face paled at his words. He squeezed her hands silently asking her to trust him.
She nodded weakly.
"Close your eyes," He said.
She looked at him wide-eyed. He squeezed her hand again and nodded slightly urging her to close her eyes. She gulped praying she won't have to regret trusting him.
She could feel him moving a little away from him and then he took her left hand in his and kissed the back of her palm. She felt something cold slipped her finger, while his warm hand still held hers.
"You can look now," He whispered.
She opened her eyes to see him looking at her hand where a giant green stone glinted on her finger. She was shocked beyond words. It was wrong, very very wrong. She was dumbstruck.
"I wanted to see how it looked at its right place," She heard him say softly.
"I can't, it shouldn't," She tried speaking.
"I know," He said looking at her, "Only for tonight, just for tonight."
He stared at the stone glinting on her finger for a long time, while slowly falling asleep in her lap while she softly ran her fingers through his hair.
She would forever keep this night locked in her memory. She felt peace, safety, and love and she was ready to sell her soul to the devil to have a night like this with him till her last breath.
She bent down and placed a soft kiss on his head, his even breathing caressing her hand that he tightly clutched before sleeping. She sat there looking over him, engraving the memory in her brain till the break of dawn. The fairy tale was coming to an end.
He was sleeping soundly it hurt her to wake him up before anyone find out her in his chamber. He was half asleep while she moved him to bed with great efforts, she tucked him in his bed while placing one last kiss on his forehead.
Oliver woke up startled. He found himself in his bed while he was sure he didn't fell asleep there. She was gone, her smell still lingering on his clothes, and the green diamond glittering on the side table.
