The first day of the Academy has begun. The bed was comfortable, so I slept well, but it can’t
compare to the comfort of home; will have to adjust to this change. I got dressed
and left the room. On my way out of the dorms towards the Academy main house, I
met Ventus, greeted him and continued my walk to the first lesson. It was a
nice sunny day, so I enjoyed the feel.
“Good morning students, my name is Fiia Feeniks. We will now begin the magic
theory class, and I plan to introduce you to all the different mage classes and
what they do. After that, you will have a practical lesson and
evaluation to decide which mage class you will be part of, at least for now. These classes can be changed, but it
rarely happens since everyone usually does what they're most accustomed to. Oh, and before that, we’ll also test your elemental affinity.”
She faced the board and began to write down the classes. Her hair was short and
blonde, she looked in her early thirties, but since mages often can slow down
ageing or even stay young looking for nearly forever, it’s hard to guess the
actual age. She wore a long hooded coat and a witch hat, but lately, you don’t see
people wearing those since they went out of fashion a few decades ago.
“Anyone knows anything about mage classes?” She turned around and put down both
of her hands on her table.
“Silence... Then I will begin to explain.
Battlemages are the ones who excel in close to medium range offensive spells,
in the military, they’re used in backing the advancement of the front line.
Support mages mainly function as healers, but in rare occurrences, they have to
provide mid to long-range cover spells.
Enhancers have an affinity towards magic that can enhance their own physical
bodies, be it against physical attacks or magical attacks, so they are the ones
who stand on the front lines and are supposed to take charge into the enemy ranks.
They can also enhance allies, but their spells work the best on their own
bodies.
Artillery mages purpose in war is to be the first to engage enemy troops before main force charges, to lower the numbers on the opponent side, since the spells they use affect a wide range and are very destructive. Once the allies
engage their job is mostly done, after that they can still assist if they have
mastered spells that are used on a single target or small groups.
Summoners can summon elemental beasts, and they usually take form from the
summoners imagination, so we’ve seen many abominations, but they aren’t real
creatures, just some energy given a form, it isn’t right to call it an actual
summon, but years ago, no one knew that and later on, everyone decided not to
change the name of this mage class. These mages usually are a part of a different military team whose main focus is on infiltrations and small battles because
there have been many cases of them killing their comrades in large scale wars.
Subjugation mages have the ability to have control over the field. They can use
magic that manipulates elements around them, like grass and trees; they can
track footsteps from the ground. If the enemy has invisibility, soundless steps magic,
they can also use air to find the enemy, so it’s hard to hide against them. In
war, they are used to bind enemy troops and collect information.
Beastial mages turn themselves into any creature and have a wide range of
uses; surveillance, infiltrations, scouting and many other ways, including
attacking as the main force. The way they can turn into beasts is that they
have to use parts from it and consume it, so they also eat their meat, bones,
sometimes rocks and even some nasty looking stuff. The military organizes many hunts to collect those resources, so they don’t have to
get them by themselves.
And for last, there are beast tamers. This type of magic is interesting because it depends on the person's ability to traverse into another
reality. We call it the Nebula fields. There are many otherworldly creatures
that haven’t been seen in this world, so the ones who investigated it concluded that it’s a different world from this one. It’s not as if you
yourself go there, but your mind is connected to it, so you don’t have an actual
physical body there, and you can’t interact with it any other way than
communicate. Once you find any creature you’d like to make a contract with, they will judge if you are worthy of their power. It’s a rare occurrence to have
someone who has more than one of them since the price you pay is that they
will eat their contractor's body at the moment of their death. We still don’t
know what gain there is to that, but there is an institution investigating the other world and everything about beast taming. And usually, this is a bonus class, so most of the time, they are part of other classes and have this ability at their disposal.” After explaining variations in which mages are used, she sat down and turned towards the window as if longing for the lesson the end faster.
After reading books, yes... only books... She didn’t open her mouth for the
rest of the lesson, even when asked questions. The lesson ended.
“Follow me. I’ll bring you to the indoor training grounds for your evaluation.”
Now that she didn’t have to explain to us much more, she jumped out of her chair
and led the students towards our next location with a big smile on her face. It just seems that she doesn’t like talking much.
We entered an enormous room. The ceiling was so high that you could almost fit
an entire castle underneath it. This place did look massive when I saw it before,
but not in this kind of size. We all formed four lines by fifteen and stood there while
we were called in one by one so they could read our elements. The mythic device
they use to find our elements is called “Solar glass” and is operated by ten mages constantly charging it with magic. After that, they direct it to the one
who needs the reading. While standing with back against the device, it will
consume nearly all of your magic energy and burn element symbols on it. If
another element is awakened, the old mark will disappear and make a new one so
that the symbols are mostly symmetrical. No one knows why, guess the ones who
created the device liked to have some aesthetics. This procedure is used yearly if a student wants to check if they’ve awakened more elements.
“Neeeeext...!! Elias Lyceus!” The teacher that is in charge of making notes
called me over in a loud voice.
“Take off your shirt, turn your back against it and just stay still.” He pointed at the Solar Glass and continued to take notes.
As the device was taking away my magic energy, I could feel that I’m getting
exhausted. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone would get dizzy or even faint; it wasn’t pleasant. The symbols didn’t hurt at all.
“Okey, let’s see....” The teacher fixed his glasses and walked behind me.
“E? What is this?”
