Keith sat on the cold floor of the cell. All he could hear was static and he was starting to get dizzy. He didn't have his lighter but clenched his fist anyway. There weren't any other cells around because they thought he needed extra security. At least he wouldn't have to deal with all the noise from other people. Something churned in his gut and he pressed his arm against it. He heard voices murmuring and looked up. This shouldn't be possible. But there she was walking around in a blue uniform, hanging onto a clipboard.
She heard her name and looked over. Her eyes locked onto his betrayed face and smirked.
"Doesn't seem like you've gotten rid of the problem"
Lance's eyes flicked over and saw the recognition on his face.
"You were stupid to-"
Lance covered her mouth.
"If you want him to cooperate, I wouldn't annoy him."
She rolled her eyes and shoved him away with her shoulder
"Like you're not biased."
"I'm just trying to make it easier."
She huffed and walked out of Keith's sight. His eyes stayed locked onto the spot she where was just standing. Lance shifted his eyes back to him. Keith was digging his fingernails into his fingers on his other hand.
They both jumped and Keith saw Lance look towards who he assumed was Hester.
"Yeah, I know"
He walked away and Keith finally exhaled. He inhaled in short, sharp breaths and bit his lip.
"Would it be possible for.. The Angel Killer.. To have his lighter back?"
"What? Why? Its a weapon"
"Well yes, but when he was arrested he didn't actually hurt anyone with it. I think it's more like a comfort thing, and if that's the case then I think that he needs it now."
"He knows Hester and she was taunting him a lot when we walked past earlier. Before he was arrested someone got him kicked out of his group so he hasn't really been handling things well. Although it might not seem so he actually is quite scared most of the time and if his anxiety gets out of control it could possibly do a lot of damage to him and anyone in reach of his powers."
"Okay, say I give it back to him. If he hurts anyone with it, it'll get taken away. Are you okay with being responsible for him?"
"Yeah I am"
She gave it to him and he thanked her. He started walking away.
"I know you want to help him, which you can. However, don't do anything illegal."
"You got it boss"
He heard the door swing open so put up his barrier of floor grip. His fingers tightened on his elbows.
Keith flinched and moved his hands up to his ears.
"I'm not here to hurt you"
He waited a couple minutes before turning his head.
"At least you didn't say that stupid shit again."
"I got your lighter for you"
He held his hand out. Keith perked up and lowered his eyes to his hand.
"This is a trap."
"No its not"
"No. I saw you before and thought you needed it. Its a comfort thing, right? For Anxiety?"
He stepped forward and Keith glared.
"You're not going to be able to walk over here, just throw it"
"You sure? What if it breaks?"
"I'm a good catch"
Lance shrugged and chucked it over the room. Keith leaned forward to reach it and closed his hands around it. He
fell back in his corner and stared at the lighter.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Treating me like a person."
Lance scoffed which tore Keith's eyes back to him.
Keith frowned and flicked his eyes back to the lighter.
"I've killed people"
"Why doesn't that bother you?!"
"Why did you kill them"
Keith looked up at Lance's face, searching it. All he found was curiosity and kindness. There was no anger or malice hidden beneath anything.
"See? You had to. I'm not gonna be mad at you for doing your best to live"
Keith's eyes drifted away and bit his lip. Lance sat cross-legged on the floor.
"Do you want to help me make some rules?"
"For the police. Like anyone in this building or when people have to come in here"
"Don't mention Hester at all and I don't want to see her either."
"I'd probably kill her if she comes in here. And I don't want to be here longer than I have to."
"How do you know her?"
"Remember when I talked about the 'distraction'?"
"Hester. She got me kicked out for 'being followed by police'. We were talking about 3 minutes before I was arrested, so she would have told Asami where I was. And now that I'm here, the rest of the Angel Killers are just there for her to do anything to."
"She's the one who is meant to disband the Angel Killers right?"
"What are the rules going to do anyway. Its not like anyone will want to be nice to me. Everyone here hates me."
"Do you have any more?"
"Quit being nice to me. Prison isn't meant to be happy or safe. The only thing I want help with is getting out of here and we both know you're not allowed to do that because it's illegal. I don't want you to come in here either. It gives me a huge amount of unease because I can't tell when or if you'll just switch around and start attacking me."
Lance sighed and stood up. Keith's eyes followed him.
He turned around and walked out the door, locking it behind him like everyone else had to. Keith's eyes stayed on the door for a couple minutes before looking down and opening his lighter.
He jumped slightly when he felt a hand touch his arm. His head dropped into his knees and wrapped his arms back around it to keep everything still.
"Hey Toga. You're invisible correct?"
"Okay, well move your hand off before they catch on. It still moves stuff."
He felt the weight of her hand lift off. "There is a listening device under the table but it's only on when a cop is in here. The camera is above me in the corner. Don't look up into it, the light will catch on your eyes. The camera is always on"
"You really picked up on this quick."
"It took longer than usual to figure out, how long have you been here"
"In the cell or the building"
"I came in the building a couple minutes after you, it took a while to find you after we split off. I came in this cell the last time someone came in. I've been near the bars the whole time."
"Okay so you've been in the building for about 18 hours, and it makes sense now why I didn't know you were here because I only made the grip to be about 50 centimeters surrounding me."
"I can't believe you been keeping track of the time for so long"
"It's just an estimate. Someone comes in every hour or so to try to get me to tell everything I know about the Angel Killers"
"Have you been staying anything"
"Just stupid shit but I have a feeling they're gonna get sick of it soon and change something"
"Hey I have a plan to get out"
"Is it just you here?"
The door slapped open and the handle made a crack in the wall. Keith put up his grip and Toga moved back from him. He wasn't quite sure where she was so he did it to the entire floor and once he felt her freeze he made a pocket for her to move around. His eyes shot over to the person at the door and glared.
"Raven. What do you need"
She steped forward, taking some of the ground up with her foot. Keith's eyes fell to her feet and stared.
"I hope you know that your power won't work on me anymore. Everytime we've sent someone in here, we have more knowledge on how to overcome your power."
"You say that, yet you're pretty slow"
"You seemed pretty startled that I am able to move around"
He stood up as she got closer.
"I'm not leaving until you tell us everything you know about the Angel Killers. Until that happens, I'm allowed to do whatever I think is necessary to get you to talk. I also think you'd want to know that the longer I'm fighting against your power, the faster I can break away"
Keith let his grip melt away from the room and she smirked. Raven ran towards him and before he could dodge, she held him up by the collar. His back was shoved against the wall and he was able to freeze Toga's feet in place.
"Where are they hiding"
"I don't know at the moment. Hester got me kicked out and I'm sure they would have moved spots."
"Where did you last see them"
"In the middle of a full concrete block between two alleyways near the center of the city"
She shoved him harder against the wall. He winced and coughed.
"I'm not. Hester had something to do with it. Why don't you ask her"
"She was kicked out two. Right after you left everyone else ganged up on her and left. They didn't discuss anything in front of her so she doesn't know anything."
"That's not what I was told.. And besides, she saw them didn't she? She can at least tell you what they look like" "No. She doesn't remember anything from that day. Someone erased her memory"
"Even if her memory from that day was erased, most of us met her the day before. She can still tell you about them."
"We've already asked her. She's telling the truth when she says she doesn't remember"
"How do you know that. She still recognises me and she said something from that day to taunt me"
Raven scowled and pulled out a gun. She shoved it against his cheek. His eyes slid to the side and saw the top of the gun in the corner of his eye.
"If you want answers you need me alive. And if you kill me, that doesn't make you any better than me."
"Killing an angel and a demon are different levels"
"I'm not a demon, and killing is illegal. If you shoot me. You lose your job."
She scoffed and dropped the gun. Keith's eyes fell down with it and she threw him over her head. He couldn't hang onto the lighter and it flew across the room and scattered against the wall. He landed against the wall and crumpled to the ground.
"No hard feelings, right? Seeing as you did that to Asami."
He slowly blinked open his eyes and looked up at her.
"She has wings. And it was her hand, not her spine."
She bent down and grabbed the gun. She walked over to the door.
"Since you've been mentioning Hester this whole time, I think you wouldn't mind if we broke the other rule and brought Lance in here to heal you."
He scowled but said nothing.
"I'll take that as a yes"
She left the room and he relaxed against the ground.
"About that plan?"
"Shit, is this what happens every hour?"
"I'll answer later. We don't have time for this. There is a couple minutes until he's here and that's when we can leave with the few seconds the door will be open."
"I can make you invisible and you can get us to crawl along the ceiling until we're out. I have been all around here and grabbed a couple guns while I could. The quickest way to get out is straight along the path to the left until we can turn right. Then left and right again and the doors are there. They have motion sensors that beep so as soon as we're outside we go up the building and jump along the roofs."
"Okay, but before you turn me invisible we need to block the sight of the camera"
He grunted as he stood up and slowly made his way over to the wall. He pressed his heated hand against it and the wall started smoking. He watched it rise up and gather around the camera.
She was already next to the lighter and slid it over on his command. He stopped its momentum with his hand and lit the flame. He moved it over to his hand on the wall and it burst into flames.
"As soon as it explodes, turn me invisible"
He raised the temperature in his hand and the flame wavered. It was pressed against the wall again and it sparked.
The boom rattled the room and they heard the table slide around slightly, even though it was bolted down. The door shot open. Lance's eyes fell to the hole in the wall. He spun around as the door closed behind him. He grabbed the handle and pulled but it wouldn't budge. His radio cracked as he spoke.
"The angel killer has escaped and I'm stuck in his cell"
"There's a hole in the wall so there's nothing I could have done."
"Well then you're not stuck are you. Go after him"
They breathed a sigh of relief and started moving along the ceiling. It was silent apart from the clomping of boots drawing closer. A sharp beep made Keith jump, but it didn't stop him from moving. They crawled up the side of the building as a flood of armed police ran out below them. He finally stood up once they were on top.
"Where to next?"
"We're going to Narti's place"
He nodded and stepped forward. He winced and she moved to catch him.
"I don't think you are. You wouldn't be wincing every time you move if you were. You should've let that guy heal you."
He turned around and grabbed her wrist.
"If I would have let that happen, we wouldn't be out here."
"Do you want me to call the others?"
"No. There are hordes of police out there currently. We can handle this"
"Narti can heal you"
"That's why we need to get to them as quickly as possible"
"You're in no condition to jump roofs"
"Then we go on the ground. You can make us invisible again"
"Do you think you can walk that far?"
"I'll have to"
She placed her hands on his shoulders. He shut his eyes and inhaled.
"Stop trying to act tough. You need help and fast. So either we find a quick way to get to Narti, or we go back inside and find the guy who was meant to heal you."
"There's no way I'm going back inside."
"Then think of a way to get to Narti."
She lifted her hands off of him.
"This reminds me of what my parents told me"
"You can tell me later. Right now I don't want to here it unless it's a plan."
He huffed and turned his head away.
"He's meant to help you"
"Why can't you just let him?"
"I said shut up."
He moved towards the edge and disappeared from her view. She followed after him and slid down the side. He glanced at her over his shoulder.
"I'll make it to Narti's on my own. I just have to blow off some steam first."
"I'll come with you"
"You can't walk without hurting"
He waved bye with the gun he took from her and turned the corner. She scoffed and ran after him.
