Every second, the thing got closer. But he just stood there, sweating, seeing his probable doom.
“Is there anything to do…my death? Is fun over? Is everything over?” Gellio thought.
Finally it reached the ground, quite near him. Everyone was getting ready to die, tears in people's faces, yet there was no impact. No explosion, no boom! Nothing, or at least, for a while. It was just a small object in the ground now, harmlessly rolling past people's feet.
But just as everyone stopped their cries of fear, the thing exploded into itself in a horrible blinding explosion, and Gellio lost sight of the marketplace.
He felt himself open his eyes, or at least he thought he had. It was black, pure darkness. That’s what Gellio saw. His vision was gone, and he could not feel anything, nor even do something to escape this darkness. It was extremely disorienting. But thankfully, it slowly retracted.
“Oh no…oh no…” Gellio stammered.
For he saw the once lovely field destroyed, leaving only brown waste. The once lovely marketplace torn to the ground, not a single hint of life left. Or, at least that’s what he thought. For everyone there were black shades of what they once were, still, completely silent. Eyes hollow, and never moving. It was creepy, terrible, and it all tore his mind. Husks of the past humanity.
Gellio felt all the childlike happiness in him gone, dead as everyone around him. His world became greyer than ever. He could not see any positivity, he could not be happy, he could not be innocent. Was this maturity?
“God…god no…Why…why aren’t they completely dead? Why is everyone black….why does nobody talk to me! I didn’t ask for a special treatment, gosh why couldn’t I just be creepily black like everyone else, let someone else take my place! Who chose me?”
He continued with this angry rambling, stomping his feet in the hard grounds until he saw two forms, black as everyone else. And he instantly recognized them, Kathlyn and his mother, Michelle. Dead, black and on the ground, no sign of life left in them, just like everyone else in this nightmarish field. This was when he really broke down, tears, screams, everything. He didn’t know what to do, what to think, who to go with now. Because all his life was now there, on the ground, destroyed by a sudden mysterious thing that he could not comprehend.
So then, he thought to hug them, their cold bodies against his. It was sad, yet this was all he could think of.
“One last goodbye, mom, and Katy. Why couldn’t we just have kept living happily! You could’ve kept hugging me with love, and we could’ve gone at the park. The park we all used to love…simply a few blocks down from here. Why couldn’t we stayed a family a little longer, maybe…just one last swing, or one last play…”
And more tears were in his eyes now, so much that he couldn’t see anymore. Yet he felt them still, even when he thought he had dropped them. And with this, tears came anew, for that warmth they always radiated was too much for his little heart.
Eventually, Gellio opened his eyes. And he was surprised to not see his dear mom and sister there, gone after his rambling. And with a glance he saw remaining dust in the hands he hugged them with. But once again Gellio felt that warmth inside him, and all kinds of feelings, and he knew…he knew that they were inside him.
“How…how…no no! This is not real, no no. How could they go actually inside of me, no…no it’s probably just some remaining memories. But…where are they? Nothing makes sense, nothing!”
And in this other rambling, Gellio saw in a nearby piece of broken glass of his reflection. And it was dark and hollow, yet a small blue fire was coming out of his hollow insides, writhing and moving inside his body. A strange form, just like everyone in the field.
So then, fearing nothing but insanity, Gellio wanted to prove the strange logic of this wasteland. He went to another body, touching it slightly. Well enough, he felt dust, and slowly the body was going inside his chest, trails of it going one by one. Finally, the body was completely inside him, nothing left. Memories and feelings started welling up inside him, but he ignored them for now.
Gellio’s mind was very broken now, but his sense of humility and simple help remained. So, the blue fire still coming out of him, he slowly walked to each body, touching them until they were nothing but dust on the field, yet memories and feelings in himself. No one should be left in this dark, lonely place…
