Caspian leaned against the locker beside me, "Hey Grandma, are you going to be done anytime soon because I am starving?" He asked.
I rolled my eyes and ignored him. Caspian scoffed beside me and muttered something about superstars being real Diva's. And yes Diva's because that was a word he still used. I laughed at him and shoved his shoulder.
"Come on you big baby. Let's go. I need to drop by my locker so I can pick up my homework."
"You are so sad." Caspian drawled, shaking his head with mock pity, "Picking up homework? On the second Friday of the term? Do you even hear the words that come out of your mouth?"
I pulled the strap of my bag over my right shoulder and looked back at Caspian, "Do you?"
"Yes, I do, that's why I am concerned." He said jogging beside me with nothing but his phone and his car keys in his hands.
"I mean do you hear the words coming out of yours?"
"Oh come on." Caspian said, pushing his shoulder into my back, "Check your locker and let's go."
I fiddled with my locker's combination and tried to pull the door open but the metal box remained shut and I groaned inwardly.
"Damnit!" I cursed as I tried to pry open my locker. It was old and battered from all the times Caspian, Henri and Jan shoved each other against it. Speaking of Jan, he sidled up from nowhere and pushed Caspian aside. Caspian stumbled into the hallway with a look of shock on his face. He finally recognised Jan and laughed before barreled towards the unsuspecting guy.
"I hope you guys know this is all your fault..." I said pulling the seemingly stuck door of my locker and looking over my shoulder at their juvenile behaviour.
I was so caught up in telling them off that I almost fell over when sheets of paper flew at me. I looked at my locker shocked by the proceedings. Papers fluttered around me as they flew out of my locker in every which way. I glanced at the students walking around in the corridors. A few students who were passing by in the corridor stood in awe as they watched the captain of the football team i.e me, grapple at flying pieces of paper.
"Whoa, Baring, who is dumb enough to write you love notes." Jan laughed as he hooked his hand over the back of my neck.
"Secret Admirer's," I said, pulling the only remaining paper from my locker. I turned the paper over and looked at it. It was ... immaculate, stunning, something I had never seen before or even thought I would see. I looked over at the other sheets scattered across the linoleum floor and gestured at them.
I elbowed Jan away and pointed at the scattered papers. "Pick those up, I want to check if it is a love note."
Jan laughed at my words like that was such a ridiculous idea but he still bent over and picked up the papers. Caspian moved closer to us and looked over my shoulder. He didn't say anything as we both stared at the sheet that I had picked up.
"Whoa, Baring. That's..."
"Incredible," I whispered the same time Jan said, "Creepy."
We looked at each other in confusion before Jan burst out into uncontrolled laughter. Caspian rolled his eyes and took the other sheets from Jan's hands with a complicated look on his face. Capsian looked at the papers again. I looked at the hurried yet accurate lines drawn across the white sheets of paper, the perfect indescribable accuracy and a feeling...a feeling I couldn't quite name.
I stared at the familiar eyes that stared back at me up, shivers ran down my spine the longer I looked at them. It seemed like the eyes on the paper were daring me to feel an emotion. Not just any emotion but the emotion they were trying to portray. An emotion I still hadn't figured out but still felt in the pit of my stomach.
"Careful, Don't fall in love with me. I am an asshole." I said, grabbing the sketches from Caspian's hands.
Jan's laugh came out choked and strangled but Caspian's was louder and more carefree, "As if."
"You realise this is creepy right?" Jan asked me as I collected the pile of sketches.
I laughed it off silently appreciating the accuracy of the artist, whoever it was. This artist had taken the time to sketch pictures of me in different places and different scenarios from their perspective. I was stunning. Why would I think that was weird? Of course, the idea of someone watching me in secret sent shivers up my spine. But not, bad horror movie shivers more like excitement and anticipation. I was thrilled with the whole idea. The idea of someone out there watching me and drawing my face was exhilarating. I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body at the prospect of someone watching me in that instant, tracing out the lines on my face and focusing only on me.
I placed the sketches inside my calculus book and shoved them back into my locker. I would come back later for them. For now, I had to go grab food with the guys. Jan swang his hand over my shoulder and coughed out something inaudible into my ear. I shoved him in the ribs and laughed as he tumbled backwards into Caspian. Caspian rolled his eyes catching Jan before they both tumbled into the rows of lockers behind them.
"You know today's match was...Josiah?" I reached out to grab Josiah but he dashed past my hand into the night. I looked back at Caspian and Jan who were watching me with confused expressions, "Someone I know."
The two boys just nodded and broke out into another harmless fight. I watched the school doors expecting to see Josiah rushing back in but it never happened.
Josiah Thomas is a selectively mute artist with sarcastic thoughts, nightmares and a skilled hand. Daniel Baring on the other hand is a loud, boisterous popular jock who excels at all contact sports but can not draw to save his life. These two are about to find out that everyone is a little broken and healing can come from the least expected place. Mix that with high school, crushes, soccer and a surprisingly laid back school nurse and you get a heartfelt YA novel that's not for the faint of heart. Find out how these boys fall in love, heal and deal with high school drama in this youthful tale.
