"Hello, residents of planet Odysseu. We are the Unbound."
Elmund's world became an endless sea of black, spiking his fear like a shock of electricity through his chest. The slow stern voice almost seemed almost able to cut the air, with no hints of kindness or compassion within this voice. It almost seemed to hang in the air like the final moments before a thunderstorm began in earnest.
"We maintain the checks and balances for worlds with developing sentient populations. Unfortunately, due to your shortsightedness, your world is fast approaching irreversible ecological devastation. We have the means to prevent this, but you must first be deemed worthy."
There was a distinct itch deep in Elmund's mind that he could not pin down and scratch, the source, of course, being the voice projected directly into his head, almost as if he knew it from somewhere.
"We have witnessed your pointless internal wars over issues that should have been resolved peacefully. We have witnessed your selfish and ultimately self-harming corruption. We have witnessed the willing ignorance of the masses that serves to turn a blind eye to the evils and unjustness of the world around you instead of courageously pursuing them. We can not tolerate such things within our collective, as they will inevitably bring about the end of all civilisations."
"However, we are not without mercy."
The light, crisp, feminine voice cut in.
"We will grant you the tools with which you will need to prove yourselves. These tools will be individualised to different extents for each organism that fits within the suitable adaptation limits, but they will only be tools. The possibilities in how they are used will be down to the individual wielder themselves. The strength of these tools will only be limited by willpower and ingenuity. They have the potential for great good and great evil. Please choose wisely."
The words weighed heavily on me; the last three words were genuinely ominous. What were these tools they were referring to? And what did they mean by "people who fit within the suitable adaptation limits"? As I was still thinking furiously about this, a much younger, more playful voice broke my train of thought.
"Well! I get to explain the basics! Firstly, the tool we refer to is what we call the Mortis Drive, or for short, MD. It is a cluster of neurons in your brain that form a circuit. This circuit will both allow you to sense your willpower in a more tangible way and also allow you to will-bend. The act of will-bending allows you to affect your surroundings in different ways! There are two types of MD clusters; the common type allows for the build-up of an energy reserve stored within your body's cells. This reserve can then be expended on a range of physical ability improvements or the expulsion of that energy in its raw form as a beam. Then we have the Advanced type of MD cluster for more flexible brains, allowing for an infinite variety of will-bending categories that depend on the individual. Well! That is all the time I have for an explanation. I hope you are all ready! This might hurt somewhere between a little and a lot, depending on how old you are! Oh, and anyone approaching or exceeding the age of 30 Earth solar cycles will likely not be within the suitable adaptation limits as your brain has likely lost most of its inherent flexibility! Without further adieu, let's start the mind weave!"
[Warning, warning, civilisation level mind weave in progress, beginning Mortis Drive cluster formation within indigenous population, T-minus 3... 2... 1... initialising.]
With those robotic words still ringing in my head, the sea of black around me became blindingly white with a profusion of colourful streaks, all flitting and flashing throughout the entirety of my vision. It started as an itching sensation in my head but quickly developed into a splitting migraine right within the centre of my skull. Dropping to my knees, I felt the hot sticky feeling of blood coming from my nose as I cradled my head in my arms and clenched my teeth. Then there was a -pop! Similar to the popping sensation of your ears as you climb a mountain, I felt my perception expand.
[Notice, stabilising all newly formed Mortis Drive clusters, expected time, 15 minutes]
Still surrounded in brilliant white, the extra perception was all around me in the air. Reaching out with my hand a little, it felt like the difference between the feeling of hot and cold air over my skin, with some places being warmer and some colder. It was so tangible that it was almost the genuine feeling of water slipping through my hands as if someone had turned a tap on. The sensation of warm water was splashing over my hand and trickling down my arm to my elbow. Focusing, I could even start to see the mirage-like shimmer all around me in the air, almost like I had blurry vision, and almost instinctually, I reached out, and with the same feeling as breathing in air, I 'breathed' the shimmer into the skin on my right hand. Instantly I felt my heart pump harder, I felt more energetic, and the lukewarm sensation of water over my arm snapped ice-cold as if the warmth had all been sucked out of it, to the point that mist flowed away from my fingers, and actual condensation formed along my arm.
[Alert, Alert, use of unstabilised Mortis Drive cluster can result in unforeseen complications, notifying administrators, extending stabilisation time for user SSS-055 by 10 minutes]
A feminine voice floated into my ears like the peal of a bell,
"Well, well, well, It's not often someone bothers me twice in one day." The voice made a noise as if clicking its tongue at me.
"Aarill was not wrong about you; you have incredible Oma potential." I could feel eyes running over my arm, up to my shoulder, and along the back of my neck up to my head,
"Well, at least you only absorbed some of the thermal energy around you. If you had also tried to manipulate it, you might have died as your MD has not yet stabilised." I felt a finger I could not see press against my forehead.
"Well, I guess I might help you a little. I'm going to mark you SSS-055, interesting things seem to happen around you, and frankly, I've been quite bored. However," she giggled,
"Please be patient and don't use your MD until it's stable and you have exited the mind weave. Goodbye and good luck, SSS-055. I'll be watching." Just like that, the presence was gone again. I sighed, letting out the breath I didn't realise I was holding in. Not knowing any quicker way out, I found myself content with just watching the patterns and movements of the shimmers in the air around me. The shimmers only came into focus when I focused on them, like looking through a window at close range at the scenery outside; the outside view appears crystal clear as if the glass isn't there. Then when I focused on the shimmers, it was like focusing your eyes on the tiny motes of dust dotted along the glass, they snap into clarity, and the scenery outside becomes obscured instead. Watching the shimmers twist and weave throughout the space around me, I noticed my breath created thick, twirling, shimmering swirls as I breathed. They even radiated out from my skin in waves, similar to the waves at a beach, rolling off me and upwards into the sky before dissipating and blending into all the other shimmers.
[Notice, stabilisation successful, vital signs are within normal ranges, Mortis Drive equilibrium reached. Thank you, user SSS-055. Good luck, we will be watching. Terminating user connection.]
My vision fell into darkness again before I blearily blinked open my eyes under the concerned looks of my mom, sister, and brother.
