Penny arrives at Tony's café, where mum always orders birthday cakes. In February, Penny turns sixteen and even though there are five months left, she looks in the café shop windows at their cakes while she rounds the corner. Chocolate would be nice. Penny thinks and remembers that it's Lisa's birthday soon. Is it possible to convince Lisa to have a chocolate cake for her thirteenth birthday later in September?
Penny walks around the corner of the cafe and crashes into someone, Penny quickly looks up and sees that it's a guy in Penny's age. His coffee has been spilled over his shirt and pants.
"Oh no, I'm so sorry! Are you okay?" Penny asks anxiously, digging into her bag and then handing out a wet wipe to the unknown guy in front of her. She looks at him as he receives the wet wipe. He's very handsome, Penny thinks. His long light blonde hair gives a slightly more feminine impression but he works confidently in it. Penny snaps out of her thoughts after time staring and quickly looks away. Before that, Penny manages to see that he has brown eyes. He tries to wipe off the stain on the shirt and pants with the wet wipe without success.
"It's okay, it was not on purpose, right?" he says with a smile to Penny.
"No, it wasn't!. How can I make it up to you? Can I buy you a new coffee or something?"
"Yeah, sure", he smiles and leads her towards the café.
"I drink black coffee and how about you buy something for yourself so we can have a little talk here on the outdoor terrace?"
"Maybe, but..."
"It's okay if you don't want to, but I promise nothing bad will happen."
He extends his hand towards the outdoor terrace and she follows the hand with her eyes. That's true, there are people here so she does not have to worry. She bites her lip and glances at the guy.
"Maybe for a little while then," she says at last. It's probably the least I can do after spilling his coffee all over him, she thinks and goes into the cafe and he takes a seat on the outdoor terrace.
Penny joins the queue to buy something to drink. It's a person before so it's her turn soon. What can she take that takes the least time to drink up? A small cup of tea perhaps? She approaches the barista, a brown-eyed girl Penny's age. Her hair is covered with a blue veil and she wears long sleeves and long trousers, even though it's not yet so cold outside. On a sign on the chest it says Hello! My name is Camira.
"Hello, how can I serve you today?" Camira asks, smiling at Penny.
"I want a big black coffee and a small tea."
"What kind of tea?"
Penny had not thought about that, she just wanted to be able to drink up fast and then get home.
"Just earl gray", she replies, it's probably the most usual tea there. Camira makes the tea and a coffee, but the cups of tea were bigger than Penny thought. Penny pays and goes out to the outdoor cafe with the cups on a tray, where he sits and waits. He tries to chase away a fly that landed on a spot where someone has spilled soda, but his attention goes to her when she puts down the tray opposite him. She lowers her gaze. Now there are two flies on the soda spot.
"Do you crash into people?" he asks as he takes his coffee cup from the tray.
She laughs nervously and sits down.
"No. This was the first time."
"Luckily it was me you crashed into." he says, smiling at her.
What does he mean by that? she thinks, blowing on her tea and then sipping it. He does the same with his coffee before continuing to talk.
"It's not something to get offended by. I often crash into others when I am thinking."
Penny meets his gaze. The brown eyes twinkle in the sunlight.
"By the way, I do not think I have introduced myself. My name is Johannes." he says, holding out his hand.
"And my name is Penny." she answers a little cautiously and takes his hand for a handshake but instead he gives her hand a kiss. Penny feels how embarrassed she gets, what did he just do?
"Do you often have coffee here?" he tries to continue the conversation and he releases her hand.
"Yes, sometimes." She answers briefly while taking back and stares at her hand, the skin where he gave a kiss feels uncomfortable, she just wants to pick up a wet wipe and wipe her hand. But he could not know that she dislikes unknown peoples touch, maybe she should say something when it happend, now she would only seem stupid if she picked up the wet wipe.
"I usually come here aswell. The coffee here is really good."
"Mmm" Penny gets out in response, all her focus is on not panicking about the discomfort on her hand.
"I've just moved in, you know," Johannes continues.
"Ah, okay", she gets out, it gets quiet and they continue to drink in silence. Penny looks at her mobile phone, she has to come up with an excuse to get out of there so she can wash her hand, the discomfort only grows.
"Excuse me," Penny finally says without coming up with an excuse. "I have to go now."
She places her cup on the table and gets up. Just half of it drinken.
"Of course." he says and smiles, he gets up shortly after her.
"But Penny," he continues. "If you see me again, feel free to say hello and talk for a while. As I said, I have just moved in and know anyone. It would be nice to hang out with you." Penny looks at him, he seems nice, maybe you can get to know him in the future?
"Sure."
"Good. I really hope to see you again. But hopefully without more accidents."
She smiles and tries to be more relaxed towards him.
"I promise not to crash into you again."
