Kingdom of the Red Rose
(Episode 1 of 62)
Prologue
(Part 1 of 1)

These are the chronicles of the Kingdom of the Red Rose; the tale of how it came to be. However, where most stories begin with life, ours starts with death.

Death is the inevitable result of all life as we know it. But this exodus, whether sudden or expected, is in no way the finale. A lifetime is but one small step in the uncharted trek of the immortal soul, and all steps seem bound towards the same inescapable end. Death has had such an impact on the living, that it has been personified throughout human history in various forms. The Grim Reaper is one of the many names it was given, and it is as close to the truth as anyone has ever come, but it is not accurate at all.

The Grim Reaper does exist, but he, or she, is not one entity. There are five thousand and one Grim Reapers responsible for collecting and escorting souls between the two known realms of existence: life and the afterlife.

Griffin, the newest addition to the Grim Reaper ranks, was asked to take part in an important mission on Earth. A very rare occurrence as far as Griffin knew, where dozens of Grim Reapers and Angels would soon gather at one location in the human world and work together. The instructions he was given were simple; help collect the souls of humans that are about to die before they are stolen and dragged to Hell by Demons.

This is an interesting choice for an opening. On the one hand, there is the part of me that says "having something like this flat-out exposited feels like a missed opportunity for show-don't-tell' storytelling", but on the other I can perfectly understand wanting to sketch the concept out in stone and hit the ground running.

I guess the middle ground for that be would be that it might've worked to inject a bit more of the kind of tone and oomph of the narrative voice here? Instead of the author telling me "okay, this is what the story is about", I could picture this as like an engraving sitting at the edge of the Earth, telling the story of the rise of the Kingdom of the Red Rose, and I wonder how such an inscription would've given me this sort of information. Does that make sense?

i would, at the very least, maybe split off "but it is not accurate at all" into a separate sentence, just to deliver the punch that humanity's way of personifying death as a grim reaper still lacks the actual understanding of what it means to die. Give it a sentence or two of having that information settle in before elaborating that there is not just 'a' death or 'a' grim reaper -- but many.

I would also maybe save the mention of Griffin's name until the very end -- explain that a rare occurrence in the world of death is happening, with the angels and deaths descending for a common cause, before establishing that one of them -- the newest addition -- is Griffin.

Beyond that, the concept is interesting. Having many deaths and having them personified as escorts first and foremost is a good idea; I just wonder if the separation of Heaven and Hell is clear enough, since it sounds like Grim Repears generally(?) try to get the souls to heaven, only going to hell if stolen by demons? I'd maybe make that a bit clearer here, if we're going for this initial exposition and setting of the world here.
