the Death Spectrum

the abandoned building

the abandoned building

Aug 03, 2021

It all starts in purgatory, Lyle was behind some rocks with his partner Azel watching a road in the mountains through which a small troop of supplies would pass.

- They're coming, get ready Azel

"Right," Azel replied.

Azel and I positioned ourselves in the middle of the road blocking the way.

"Get out of the way, damn you," said the demon traveler, "get out or we'll pass over."

I took my two pistols out of my black overcoat and fired upwards causing a huge beam of light.

- Th-Th-Those guns and those black eyes, Yeah! The specter of death! - shouted the fleeing traveler

After the traveler's escape Lyle climbed into the wagon and continued looking for something of value but all he found was a chest in the right corner of the back, where there were some bronze coins. On the way down he saw Azel sulking but tried to ignore her and walk past her.

- Aaah, that's not funny, after you killed me everyone is afraid of you. - Azel pulls Lyle by the collar of his overcoat.

"It's not my fault, at least that way the jobs are easier," replied Lyle, pushing Azel's hand away

— You are so boring you know? — but it's amazing that a human is so strong.

'It's already dawn, let's go back to Berfron.

“Right, right, Mr. Specter,” Azel replied in a sarcastic tone.

When I arrived in Berfron the sun had already risen and the first thing I saw was those dirt streets gleaming with hot sun, Purgatory was not very rich in this part of the map, most of the houses were made of wood and there were few buildings in Berfron. Despite being a little isolated place, it was the perfect place for mercenaries who were running away from something or looking for a place to do missions and settle down. On the whole Berfron looked more like a small western village.

“Hey Lyle let's go straight to the guild to get the quest reward.

Azel ran happily ahead leaving Lyle behind as a blue haired figure passed behind him.

"Death specter... The dome wants your head."

I quickly looked back but all I saw was a blazing sun and old wooden houses despite a light breeze I still smelled a sweet scent in the air.

- What was this? Lyle said, looking around. "Anyway, I'd better hurry or that woman is going to spend everything we earned today."

Arriving at the mercenary guild the first person I saw was Farsy the receptionist. Everything was like when I left, tables covered with drinks and some incubus drinking and laughing in the back of the tavern, in the back of the tavern facing the entrance there was also a staircase to the second floor.

— Well, if it isn't our goose with the golden eggs, your works are making good money for the guild.

“It's good to know I'm being helpful, you money lover.

— Ohoho don't be like that, I have something serious to talk to you about. - whispered Farsy

"Any more dangerous work?"

“Worse, you know the Purgatory Throne has been empty for a while and it looks like there are some creatures keeping an eye on it.

“Is it because that would be bad?

"Surely they're strong and probably won't want a specter running around to derail their plans."

'Don't worry, I'll be careful.

So I walked around and sat down at the table Azel was at. As always Azel was eating a lot, there were four big plates, one had meat and noodles but the other three... Well, Azel mixed the food a lot so the other three plates had a black broth that looked more like poison.

"Lyle, you look worried, did Farsy tell you something?"

'No big deal but I have a bad feeling.

— That nothing is hunger, let's eat a little.

- Right.

After we ate I went to my guild room, actually we call it the guild but it's like a dorm for outlaws who get jobs to support themselves, at first glance it looks hostile but it's not a bad place. My room had a window facing the door, an old wooden nightstand just below the window, and an old single bed beside the nightstand. It was a very small room but there was nothing to complain about, except that Farsy was also in charge of cleaning the rooms but apparently she didn't have time the night before.

"Damn Farsy left everything dusty again, living in a desert has its harms, anyway, I'm going to sleep and when I wake up I'll fix everything."

I lay down in that old bed and in a few minutes tiredness overcame me, I ended up falling asleep but I ended up dreaming about the day I killed Azel.

“Hey, hey wake up, wake up he's coming.

"A-Azel?" - What is going on?

“Lyle, you have to kill me or else we're both going to die here.

Azel with tears in his eyes put one of my pistols towards his chest.

“Don't worry, you just need to pull the trigger.

“No azel, II can't. - exclaimed Lyle crying

"Then I'll press it for you." - said azel with a smile on his face and closing his eyes.

BANG

— Azeeeeeel!

I woke up scared and in a cold sweat, whenever I dreamed of this moment I saw my hands covered in blood and felt an enormous feeling of remorse, since that day I promised myself that I would only kill to protect those who matter to me. When looking out the window it was already night and Azel was knocking on the door.

"Lyle are you there?" There's someone looking for you.

— J-I'm on my way.

I got up quickly and grabbed my pistols from the top of the nightstand and when I left the room I came across Azel with a worried face, but as he didn't say anything I decided to just ignore him. We went down the stairs to the reception room and there was a girl with blond hair and she didn't seem to be someone simple like most of the city, in fact I already knew her but it wouldn't be good to remember the past.

"So what can I help you with, miss?"

— Lord specter, my name is Joan, Joan of Arc, and I have a mission for you.

"Will the reward be good?" - Azel exclaimed with a twinkle in his eyes.

- Don't worry miss, the reward will be great.

"Girl you really know how to speak my language." Azel said, putting his arm over Joana's shoulder.

— Anyway, what do we have to do?

— Good Mr Lyle, a few blocks from here there is a building with a lot of ghosts and they are bothering the residents, the job is for you to evict them from that building and on this map you have the location.

When I received that map I was impressed because I had already known that place before.

— Come on Azel

"This time?" Okay, okay but when we get back you're gonna buy me something to eat.

However as soon as they passed through the guild door Azel pulled Lyle by the arm with a sullen face, and brought his face close to Lyle's.

"Hey you look weird, are you sure you can do this?"

“Don't worry, I'm fine. - Lyle replied with a smile on his face

"Although it was a sad smile... how long have I not seen you smile?" - whispered Azel

When we got there it was just as I remembered, an old building, the cracked walls of unpainted cement seemed to collapse at any moment, the windows through which the moonlight came in were almost all destroyed with only a few shrapnel still attached and some stairs going up. to the second floor. But I found exactly who I thought was there.

“Hey it's Master Lyle!

"Master Lyle has returned!"

"Come all, Master Lyle is here!"

— F-F-Ghosts! - exclaimed Azel scared

'They're old acquaintances.

“Y-You really have a lot of friends.

"Master Lyle how long, what brings you here?" - Said the elder ghost

— Hello Grandpa, I was told you were causing problems and sent me here to solve the problem.

“I'm sorry Master Lyle but it's not our fault we're on the run.

- Running away? — from what?

“Earlier two big creatures came here and did some kind of ritual to summon a demon, we managed to escape down here but he's still up there.

"It's just a demon, in a few minutes we've decided to wait here." Lyle said heading for the stairs.

“Wait Master Lyle… the demon up there is an irrational demon.

Lyle stopped with his foot on the bottom step of the stairs and looked at Azel with a worried look.

“All of you out and Azel join me.

“Good luck, Master Lyle.

Lyle and Azel started up the stairs step by step so as not to make noise and looking through the windows of the rooms trying to find the demon.

“Hey Lyle what's an irrational demon? Whispered Azel.

—Irrational demons are bigger and extremely stronger than those demons in the chariot of yesterday despite that they don't think, only what drives them is hunger, their fighting instinct.

"And what do they eat?"

— Souls.

Lyle and Azel continued to sneak down the halls when they finally spotted him inside a room eating something but Azel accidentally stepped on a glass and broke it.

crash

— AZEL, RUN

- Which?

BOOM

- Behind you

I ran towards Azel but my efforts were useless, I saw in front of me the slap of that demon hit her and throw her to the next room.

— Damn you, you made the worst mistake of your life, she didn't die from it alone.

I started running in those corridors shooting at the walls of that floor while the demon followed me.

"Oh, that hurt, I'm going to make a trophy out of that demon's head." shouted Azel with a smile on his face.

The scythe tattoo on Azel's arm began to glow with a black flame, Azel then materialized his scythe, his white scythe gleaming in the moonlight that streamed in through the huge window in that room. The moon behind Azel and the blood running down his forehead made the most beautiful image of death.

- It's show time!

Azel then started to run and noticed the gunshot holes in the walls that Lyle had made. He followed the rubble the demon and Lyle had made until he found Lyle cornered against a wall and the demon ready to attack him.

"Azel?"

"Looks like you're having a hard time."

“You're not in the best shape either. Lyle replied.

- Any idea?

"Use your scythe to direct the moonlight into their eyes."

- Right

The demon punched the wall Lyle was on, Lyle jumped and ran by the demon's arm, fired two shots up and jumped to the side where Azel was, the demon turned around but the moonlight blinded him.

“Run, Azel! Lyle exclaimed, taking her hand.

- Where will we go? asked Azel with a confused face.

- There!

"U-a window?" Aren't we too tall for that?

"It's the only way out, hold on to me!"

"H-hey!"

Tximm

Lyle jumped out the window hugging Azel.

"Lyle we're falling!" yelled Azel

“Don't worry, just hold on tight to me. replied Lyle

“R-right. Azel replied, closing her eyes and hugging him tightly.

TUM

— Hey, it was soft, hey, it didn't hurt at all

— Cough cough... I think I broke something

"Lyle are you okay?"

"No, but what about the devil?"

BUMMMMMMMMMMM

“Looks like the building is collapsing on top of him. You did it! exclaimed azel, smiling.

— HAHAHAHA

"Lyle?"

“You're a great partner Azel, that was fun.

- Moron. - Azel said with a smile

After the building collapsed, all the people from the houses next door came to see what had happened and finally ended up taking Lyle back to the guild to rest and take care of his wounds.
