What's beyond the horizon

Waiting game

Waiting game

Aug 11, 2021

I wasn’t sure what to expect after meeting my new teacher that is supposed to guide me until I learn to control my magic. She was totally nuts... While attending the classes, I barely could think about anything else besides that crazy teacher. Will I really get a beating from her? Everyone usually was kind to me, so I don’t know how to deal with people like her. Will have to adapt and see how it goes anyway. Hopefully, she will teach me control over magic and won’t be aggressive towards me.

“Hey, Lil bro, where are you going? The classes have ended, don’t plan to rest?” Ventus asked me when I entered the room, dropped some of my stuff and was on my way out again. He was resting in his bed with legs pushed against the wall.
“I have extra classes for magic control, so yeah, I don’t think I’d have time to rest for a while.”
“Oke, see ya then! Have fun.”
I left and was on my way to the new class.

As I was to enter the class, I took a deep breath. My hands were shaking as I was grasping the door handle. To my surprise, the teacher wasn’t there yet, so I went to take a seat.
“Don’t plan to greet your teacher, Elias Lyceus? I’m hurt deeply. Wait, is the director not coming today with you? I heard that she would...”
When I turned around, I saw my teacher. She was biting her nails in anger. But I was amazed to see her like that. Her hair was combed and tied behind her back, the rings around her eyes were gone, and she wore a nice and sleek white blouse and long dark blue skirts.
“Aaaargh... I went through all this trouble, and she didn’t show up? Gonna have to beat up some teachers who were telling me that the director is coming...” She mumbled under her nose.
“Hello, teacher, I’m sorry for not greeting you when I entered. I didn’t recognize you.” I bowed a little.
“It’s fine, and don’t bother calling me teacher, just use my name.” Besides still having some anger issues, when she tidies up her looks, it seems as if her personality does too, but it’s still too early to hope that she won’t hit me or something.
“May I ask your name? You didn’t mention it yesterday...”
“Ah, yes, it’s Sophia Vistus. Feel free to call me whatever.” Her face suddenly went blank, and her voice sounded as if she’s about to sleep.
“Let’s have a thirty-minute nap; I ca-...” With a long yawn, she passed out while sitting at her table.

There were about nine people, including me, in this class. Besides one guy giving nearly the same looks to others as I am, it would seem that everyone else is accustomed to Sophia. The three girls in this class all sat next to each other and were chatting for now, and guys just used the time to sleep. I joined others and feel asleep.

“...n’t be bo-... Oh, I’m awake! Wake up! No sleeping in my class!”
I woke up from her yelling and looked around as everyone else was waking up as well.
”Hey, hey, you all ready to learn some c-c-c-control? Leggo to the training grounds!” She suddenly became hyperactive, opposite of how she behaved before she slept.

We went to the outdoors training ground. There were many magic imbued practice dummies and barrier crystal surrounding the grounds like a net that can stop magic attacks that miss their targets. I recognized them since I was reading about barriers, and this was the most common way to protect something from magic in everyday life since it doesn’t require having a caster on the spot and those crystals can be bought already imbued with barriers.
No one was falling in line, and they seemed disorganized even though they are studying in a military academy.

“So, new guys, come on here and tell big Sophie why you’re so bad at magic.” She used baby talk voice as if trying to ridicule us.
“Pleased to make your acquaintance Miss Vistus Sophia. I am Grodus Kali from the house Grodus. I’m here to achieve even higher mastery with magic, not that I’m particularly bad at it.” He took her hand and kissed it.
“Yikes, buddy, I ain’t some princess, you know?” The disgust on her face was visible. She doesn't like fancy greetings.
“Umm... I’m here since I can hit everything that I didn’t aim at, besides a few spells... I always miss.” I gave a dumb smile while rubbing the back of my head.
“How can you hit everything else if you can’t hit your target?” She seemed confused.
“Well, in the part of the evaluation, I missed my practice dummy and cleared out almost everyone elses...”
“I see, I see, so you can slap hard, but not what you want to. Well, it shouldn’t be too hard to aim, since you have eyes, don’t you? I thought I’d teach you how to control it better, not how to aim. Do you close your eyes when you use spells or something? Or perhaps you used summoning magic? I guess that would make sense since people try to make some big cool looking creatures and don’t bother about little details like control over it... So what did you try to make? Some dragon in the size of a mountain or what?” She stood in front of me with crossed arms and was tapping the ground at rapid speeds.
“Oh, no, I tried to use artillery spell. I haven’t really tried to make creatures out of magic, maybe later on in life.”
“What spell?” She raised her eyebrows.
“I don’t know, I just imagine the element and start to feel it swirling up in my fingertips, then I snap them, and it does what I wanted it to do, but I somehow miss anyway...”
“Well, I’ll try to find a way to help you; come back next week if I haven’t gone to seek you before then, you can go now. Bye-bye.” She faced the other students and walked away.

I have to wait for nearly everything, and that made me anxious. I wanted to know the answers, and to do that, I decided to sneak out of the city again. I can’t wait any longer. Since I’ll be gone for many hours, I better tell Ventus that I won’t come back today, so he doesn’t have to worry. Just gonna tell him that I’ve forgotten some stuff at home and will arrive tomorrow morning. This is going to be a long, long night...
