Grind Me Up (Part 2)

Grind Me Up (Part 2)

Aug 18, 2021

Josiah
"I will," I said pushing past her door and a particularly disgruntled girl who glared at me like I had taken thirty minutes of her time. I shoved my hands into my pocket and lowered my head. I made my way past the three kids seated on the chairs lined against the wall and into the street. Killian's car was packed right in front of the door but the short walk across the pavement made me feel like I was crossing a flooded river.

I pulled open the backseat door and slipped into my seat. My sister acknowledged my presence with a grunt and Killian looked at me through the rearview mirror.

"I am guessing you didn't tell her about freaking out cause your boyfriend scared you?" Killian said starting the car.

Kennedy stopped typing on her phone, long enough to lower her round pretentious looking shades so she could look at me through the rearview mirror.

"Not my boyfriend," I said, rolling my eyes.

"Sure," Killian said.

Kennedy pushed back her shades and turned to her phone. I rolled my eyes and sank into the seat. It didn't even make sense that the two of them were hanging out. The only thing Kennedy and Killian had in common was sharing a womb at the same time. Killian had short black curls that were buzzed every few weeks and Kennedy had naturally red hair that somehow never quite curled. Don't get me started on their personalities. Kennedy was a princess in the very sense of the word. If you opened a dictionary you would probably see her picture and a signed autograph beneath it.

Kennedy was more tea parties and brunch or whatever college girls did and Killian was more Beast less prince charming always trying to get dirty and rough and when he wasn't doing that he was lifting weights at the gym or pumping his muscles straight from a machine. Something like that. Either way, they were opposites so camping in the mountains with my older twin siblings was a recipe for disaster.

"Hey, Jos. Go grab us coffee."

"It's 5 pm. What do you need coffee for?" I asked, rolling my eyes and grabbing Killian's card.

"......." Kennedy piped up from the front seat.

"Make mine a ....." Killian said ignoring my question.

I rolled my eyes and walked into Grind me up. Yes, that was the actual name. Grown men and women had sat down and decided that was the name they were going for. Despite its cringy name Grind Me Up was the best coffee shop in town. Of course, I hadn't tried it because I didn't like coffee but Kennedy and Killian seemed to come here a lot. Judging from the empty coffee cups we always saw in our bin every time they were home. I walked over to the counter and joined the steady queue of three people.

The girl at the counter was serving the cheerleader at the front of the queue with one eye on the register and the other on the clock on the wall. The cheerleader was not pleased.  I looked around at the semi-full place and wondered why Killian thought I could order coffee. I couldn't even talk and he expected me to just what? Walk up to some random girl and list out a bunch of orders. I felt my breath catch in my throat as the idea of speaking to the girl at the counters sunk into my mind.

Questions floated around like what if she asked me the size of the cup, the flavour of the coffee or even...

"Next."

I stepped forward, card shaking between my sweaty fingers and I stretched out my arm. What I saw was not the girl from earlier. Instead, my eyes were blinded by a familiar radiant smile and Baring's eager face as he tired his apron behind his back. Baring took my card and smiled at me like he always did: with everything he had screaming sunshine and rainbows. Must be nice, I thought to myself as I watched him fidget with the register. After a small ah-ha. He raised a plastic menu card and smiled at me.

"I got you." He said handing the menu over to me.

"Hey, if he is going to be deciding on what to get, can I get my black coffee to go?" A lady yelled from behind me.

"Sorry mam but you have to wait your turn," Baring said in a calm cheery voice.

My head jerked up and I looked at him wondering why he hadn't just given her her order. I was used to people passing over me in places. Baring giving me time to decide was the unfamiliar path.

I pushed the menu onto the counter and pointed at Kennedy and Killian's drinks. Baring yelled out the orders as he typed them into the computer, then with his ever-present, always blinding smile he leaned over the counter,  looked at me and asked, "Anything else?"

I felt my cheeks heat up and I looked down at the menu again. I hadn't thought about myself. I hadn't remembered to order anything. My heart started beating wildly and I pointed at something random on the menu. I looked up at Baring and he squinted his eyes at me.

"Are you aiming for a heart attack at 17?"

I looked down at the order and pointed at something else without even looking.

"Do you want me to recommend something for you?" Baring asked, looking at my second order with a disapproving smile.

I managed the smallest nod and watched him enter something into the computer before yelling the order.

"So what names should I write on these orders?" I looked around frantically trying to figure a way out of the stressful situation but before I could figure it out Baring spoke again, "It's ok. I got you."

I let out a large exhale and watched as he scribbled something onto the cups, "So...I figured out what you were signing yesterday. I looked up at his face confused. "You know when I signed to you."

Baring placed his marker and cups onto the counter and signed, ‘You are cute.’

My face heated up and I looked away long enough to notice Killian and Kennedy watching me through the shop's window. 'Conniving siblings'. I thought as I dragged my eyes away from them.

You signed, ‘Do you know what that means.’

"And Yes, I do know," Baring said, smiling with his whole face.

I ducked my face hiding my inflamed cheeks. I couldn't handle being around Baring. Despite his usually stupid actions he still managed to turn me into a tomato.

"See you at School, Josiah," Baring said, passing my cups over to the female barista again.

The girl packed my orders and handed them to me with a disapproving eye. Baring stretched over to hand me back the card I had forgotten but the girl snatched it and slid it towards me. Baring muttered, "What the hell Joanna." Loud enough for everyone to hear but I picked up the card and my orders leaving the store.

I slid into my brothers car and glanced at the names on the cups Baring had written, Fancy Josiah, Butch Josiah and Cute Josiah on the three cups. I laughed as I picked up the one that said, Cute Josiah. Kennedy and Killian could figure it out themselves. Probably serve them right for trying to play matchmaker.

Tracing the loops in Baring's Handwriting, I smiled to myself. Idiot. Kennedy and Killian groaned in the front seat after accidentally tasting each other's orders. My smile grew even wider, "Come on Idiot. Let's go."

"Watch it," Killian said, looking over his shoulder.

"I don't think you scare him anymore, Killian," Kennedy said, appraising me from the top of her shades again.

Josiah Thomas is a selectively mute artist with sarcastic thoughts, nightmares and a skilled hand. Daniel Baring on the other hand is a loud, boisterous popular jock who excels at all contact sports but can not draw to save his life. These two are about to find out that everyone is a little broken and healing can come from the least expected place. Mix that with high school, crushes, soccer and a surprisingly laid back school nurse and you get a heartfelt YA novel that's not for the faint of heart. Find out how these boys fall in love, heal and deal with high school drama in this youthful tale.
