Today I will be going to see Jac the matchmaker because she wants to see me for some reason. She probably wants me to try out another marriage. I have been married twice before but the marriages never lasted long. Once the men signed on the dotted line of the marriage contract, they were happy but the marriages didn’t last.
The first Vampire guy I married was lovely, his name was Ryan and we were getting along fine. We were almost at the stage of mating but it never happened because there was something up with Ryan. He began to cough up blood, have nose bleeds, he'd fall asleep when he wasn’t tired among other things. Neither of us knew what was happening to him so we went to see a Doctor. The Doctor diagnosed Ryan with a rare blood cancer. I thought Vampires couldn’t get ill but apparently a Vampire can get cancer from drinking an unknown blood type and nothing can be done to help because it is like poison for any supernatural being. I was gutted when I found out and spent as much time as I could with Ryan. We’d spoke about taking our relationship to the next stage but we never got the chance as Ryan became too sick. He died only a two months after we got married and I was broken. I didn’t get to complete my eternal life with him, I wish I could have because I know we would have had a great life together and I will miss him forever. The short amount of time I had with Ryan was precious, I will never forget him. He will always be a part of my heart no matter what life brings me.
I didn’t want to get married ever again. I missed Ryan too much and knew I would never meet someone as nice as him ever again but I was lonely. I had my family but it wasn’t the same, I needed a life partner so I decided to see Jac again and was married again shortly after to Jonah. Jonah was perfectly healthy and was a nice person but we didn’t really see each other as anything more than friends, yes there was an attraction between us but nothing more so the marriage ended after just after a few weeks. If we had left it longer then the marriage could not be terminated because after a certain amount of time of a marriage, the marriage is valid whether it has been consummated or not. The couple must stay together till death do they part. We didn’t want to be stuck with each other for so long when we knew we didn’t love each other so terminating the marriage was the only option for us.
After Jonah, I gave up on marriage. Now years later, I am in front of the mirror in my bedroom getting ready to see Jac. I dressed into a short black dress and left my legs bare. I put on black flat shoes and left my long brown hair loose. I did simple makeup of a little concealer and eye liner, I slipped on my blue denim jacket before heading out to see Jac.
Once I was stood outside Jac’s office. I hesitated before knocking.
“Just a minute,” Jac’s voice said from inside her office. Within a minute, Jac opened the door and welcomed me to take a seat in front of her desk. I sat down and waited for her to speak.
“So you must be wondering why I asked you to come here today Tegan,” Jac said.
“Yes,” I replied. “Why have you asked me here today?”
“I thought maybe you could give this marriage thing another go,”
“I don’t think I want to,” I admitted. After 2 failed marriages, I don’t want to be heartbroken for a third time. It will ruin me.
“Why not?”
“I don’t want to get hurt again,” I sadly replied as I got flashbacks of my previous marriages. Poor Ryan, he died so young. He was older than me at 33 but that is still young, he had his whole eternal life ahead of him if it weren’t for the cancer. I don’t know how Ryan managed to get his hands on the poisonous blood, I still can’t help but think what it would be like if he hadn’t and was still alive.
“I’m sure you won’t, I have a good feeling about this,” Jac tried to assure me with a sympathetic look. She must have guessed I was thinking of Ryan. I hate when people do that, try to sympathise with you because they will never know what you are feeling, they just pretend like they do when in reality they have no clue.
“You do?”
“Yes. What you went through with Ryan was terrible but that was years ago. Now could be your time to find someone special,”
“I don’t know,” I said unsurely and began fidgeting with my hands. It was getting awkward but then Jac’s phone rang.
“I’m sorry it’s important, I have to take this,” Jac apologised. “Why don’t you go and get a drink from downstairs,”
“Ok,” I agreed and stood up to leave just as Jac answered her call. I could do with a drink to calm my nerves.
Just as I left the room, I locked eyes with a young man walking towards me, he looked around my age. He was tall and lean, he had short black hair and his eyes were all black meaning he was a Demon. The Demon was wearing all black trousers, top and jacket with shoes. From what I could tell he was of a good build. He is hot, such a shame he is a Demon. He smiled at me and I smiled back shyly then looked away to walk past him, the whole while I could feel eyes burning on the back of my head but I ignored it.
I went down to the ground floor in the lift where there was a canteen and got myself a blood hot chocolate which was exactly how it sounded, hot chocolate with a little blood added to it. It reeks of Demons everywhere, they smell of danger. It’s odd how I couldn’t smell anything from the hot Demon I just saw.
Very few Vampires like me come here because most prefer to find a mate on their own or by leaving it to fate.
I took a sip of my hot drink, it was delicious and soothing for my nerves a little so I took another sip but I could still smell Demon. I decided to think about what Jac said. I’m not sure I want to be married again but what have I got to lose? I have lost everyone I love. I don’t know what happened to my parents, they left me in foster care when I was born. I only have my adoptive family but they are human including my Mum, Dad and a younger brother called Liam. It’s about time I moved out, I’m 23 and when I don’t age like the humans, they will get suspicious. If I get married then I can eventually move away and the humans will forget about me.
10 minutes later, I finished the blood hot chocolate and took the lift back up to Jac’s office to waste a little time before seeing Jac to tell her my decision. When I reached the door to Jac’s office, I knocked twice and waited.
“Come in,” Jac said. I opened the door, walked in and closed the door behind me.
“Ah! Tegan you’re back, how was your drink?” Jac asked.
“It was good,” I replied.
“Did you have a think about what we talked about earlier?” Jac asked with hopeful eyes. What a stupid question? Did she think my mind would be on anything else?
“Yes,”
“What have you been thinking?”
“Well............... I thought I might give the marriage thing one last try,” I admitted. Jac smiled at me before saying
“I’m glad you’ve decided that because there’s someone I know who would be perfect for you,”
“Really?” I asked in surprise. She has found someone already? She works fast, a little too quickly for my liking. I am very vulnerable at this stage of my life, marriage may not be the best option for me. Maybe that is why I have two failed marriages at such a young age.
“Yes,” Jac replied.
“I have the contract ready, all you have to do is sign,” Jac put a contract in front of me with a pen but I hesitated to sign after reading through it carefully. I didn’t need to read the contract, I already knew it word for word after being given it twice before but I read it anyway to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything.
“It’s ok Tegan, this one will last,” Jac assured me.
“How can you know that Jac?” I asked.
“Because I know this man very well. I’ve known him for years in fact. He will treat you well, you will be happy with him,”
“Ok, I’ll give it a try,” I took the pen in my hand and was about to sign but Jac stopped me.
“There is one thing you should know first,”
“Know what?”
“He isn’t a Vampire,”
“Then what is he?”
“He is a Demon,” Jac surprised me.
“A Demon, I can’t marry a Demon. They are supposed to be dangerous,” I exclaimed and began to panic. If I marry a Demon then I will have to endure that vile smell they have for eternity. No, that’s not possible.
“They are supposed to be yes and I suppose this Demon is dangerous too but I know he won’t hurt you,”
“How?”
“A Demon will cherish their life partner. I agree Demons are dangerous but they would never hurt the ones they love,” Jac explained.
“I’ve never met a Demon before,” I blurted out.
“Yes you have, I’m a Demon,”
“Yes but you’re different, you’re not dangerous. I know you well,” Jac would never hurt a fly and she doesn’t smell as vile as the other Demons. Perhaps the man she was talking about will be the same.
“You could get to know him and find he isn’t dangerous either. It’s ok Tegan, give him a chance and you’ll see he won’t harm you. If things don’t work out then there is a period within which the marriage can be terminated as you know well,”
“Why wouldn’t he harm me? He doesn’t even know me,”
“I know but I can see the way he feels about you,”
“How does he feel about me?”
“Why don’t you give him a chance to tell you himself?”
“Why are you eager for me to accept this marriage? Did the Demon bully you to get me to marry him?” I asked with a suspicious look.
“No, he told me he wants to marry you because he thinks you’re perfect for him,”
“How can he know that when we haven’t even met?”
“He just knows,”
“How?”
“He is a Demon, Demons know these things,”
Then there was silence. I took the silence as time to think about the situation I was in. I didn’t like the idea that the man we spoke about was a Demon but Jac was a Demon and she was nice. Maybe I could give the guy a chance and see how it goes but if he hurts me, I’ll kill him because I’ve had enough heartbreak to last me a lifetime. Besides, Jac is a matchmaker and knows what she is taking about. If I hadn’t have agreed to marry before then I would never have met someone like Ryan. Perhaps this Demon will be like him. I took a deep breath and signed the contract knowing that Jac was watching me the whole time.
“Good decision,” Jac smiled and took the pen and contract from me.
“I’ll just get him to sign and you’ll be a married woman,” Jac stood up to leave.
“Wait,” I stopped the matchmaker.
“What is it?” Jac asked nervously, she must have thought I was about to change my mind.
“Me and the Demon are compatible aren’t we? I mean if I wanted to have kids with him some day then I could right?” I asked nervously. I want to have a baby someday. If I can’t conceive with this Demon then there’s no point marrying him is there?
“I’m not sure, as I told him. To my knowledge, a Demon and Vampire have never married before. If you decide you want children in the future, you can discuss it then with a Doctor. I’ll be back soon,” Jac replied and disappeared.
