Hmm... This myth was born in the times, when people knew next to nothing about physics and believed, that mirrors reflect 'souls' of things. Although, there is a modern 'explanation' for this believing. It says that old strong vampires are very cautious. So they are rare to show themselves in a flesh. Instead they prefer to get into the brains of humans mentally and send them an illusion of the presence. These illusions are incomplete, so they may lack a reflection and/or a shadow.
Attending his second year in college, Justin's primary concerns were passing his classes, and figuring out exactly what sort of career he wanted in the future; so it's not surprising that he realized far too late that his slacker roommate turned out to actually be an ancient blood-drinking monster (not that this discovery has done much to change their relationship).
