The trio entered the room. It wasn't a big room. Only enough to fit two beds and a small table in the middle, but no chairs. The only source of light was a small window and some candles to use at night. For such an expensive ship, the room was quite ordinary.
No one said anything. The twins were looking at Edhas, expecting some kind of explanation, but Edhas had other plans.
"I think I changed my mind. I'll take us there myself. Brace yourselves." Edhas said, ready to make the spell but the twins reached to stop him.
"Are you mad? Do you want us to end in the middle of the sea?"
"Are you sick of living?"
"I assure you I am very sane. If you don't want me to take us there, then I'll take us back to the port and leave for the Isles next week with the penguin."
"What's gotten into you?"
"And can someone please tell me what's up with this penguin I hear so much about?" Rohan said, clearly more interested in the penguin than their conversation. Edhas and Jessalyin chose to ignore him.
"Nothing. I just don't want to be on this ship."
"What's wrong with this ship?"
"Didn't you hear? Weird things happen here. Maybe it's a vengeful spirit. Let's leave while we still can."
"Mate, I am pretty sure the only ghost on this ship is you."
"Rude much." Edhas said acting offended at the implications that he would be behind the weird things that were happening on the ship. It was true, of course, but the twins didn't need to know that. Besides, he considered himself to be pretty handsome. Being called a ghost by Rohan was a personal attack.
"Beeboy here still has the audacity to act offended."
"Spill the beans, what's going on?"
"Look, it's a long story. It's complicated."
"We've got time."
Edhas sighed. He knew that the twins will not back down, mostly because they were still wary of him and wanted to be sure that they are not, in fact, tricked. If he wanted them to trust him, he'll have to trust them first and be honest.
"On this ship, right now, there are some people who are after me."
"What? And you didn't think you should mention it before?" Jessalyin asked irritated by the fact that he has tried to hide such important information from them.
"This is not a complicated nor long story." Rohan pointed out as a matter of fact.
"I mentioned it now, didn't I?"
"Yeah, after we told you to. It doesn't count."
"Yes, it does!"
"No, it doesn't!"
"The real question is if they are aware of our presence. Do they know that you're here?" Rohan asked concerned about the fact that some unknown and potentially dangerous people might attack them out of the blue.
"They might even be at our door right now, for all I know."
"What?!" The twins yelled in unison at Edhas. This had to be a bad joke. The fact that Edhas was uncertain about the whole situation and yet he was talking so calmly annoyed the twins. They looked at the door, expecting some unknown people to break it and attack them. When nothing happened, they moved their attention back to Edhas.
"Don't worry, if they haven't contacted us yet it means they're still unaware of the fact that we're here."
"And you're sure about it because...?"
"Because they're idiots. If they knew that I am here, they would have already approached us."
"That's good to know. Anyway, what's up with the things appearing and disappearing on this ship?"
"I do it to mess with them. Can you imagine their faces when they want to eat or use something and that thing disappears? Classic. Besides, we needed those things more."
He snapped his fingers and a grape appeared in his hand, in distance they could hear a man screaming "My grape!"
"You stole the poor man's grape." Jessalyin said somewhat amused. If she thought about it, it was a little bit funny. Edhas was right. The food and the other things Edhas has conjured for them have always came in handy.
"He'll live."
"Can you steal from anyone?" Rohan asked. This could be a useful skill in their journey and if he could convince Edhas to teach him the spell it would be even better.
"Yeah. But I only take things from them. It pisses them off."
"I can imagine. Can I have that grape? I'm starving." Rohan said, not waiting for an answer and taking the grape.
"You're always hungry. So, what are you going to do? Do you have a plan?"
"There's no plan. I'll stay here pretending that I don't exist until we reach our destination. You can go out, but please don't attract attention to yourselves."
"Doesn't sound boring at all."
"Would you prefer we all stay in this room together?" Edhas said irritated that Jessalyin was comparing their future experiences on the ship.
"No! No. Got it, we won't attract attention." She responded fast, the thought of sharing the room with Edhas and Rohan for so long wasn't very exciting to her.
The twins kept Edhas company for a few hours. They played some games and discussed about what they should first do when they arrive at their destination. Edhas proposed to go see the king first, but the twins didn't seem too enthusiastic about it. Seeing that their conversation didn't go anywhere, Edhas conjured a book and told the pair of siblings to go eat dinner, assuring them that he will be fine on his own.
They left the room a little bit too fast. They didn't have a problem with Edhas and his company, but they were also dying to see the ship. The twins have crossed the sea before, but never with such a beautiful ship. Usually, they went with ships that transported goods or as clandestine passengers. Now, they had the chance to relax and enjoy the travel.
They went straight to the dining room. Their chamber seemed like a box compared with the huge room they just entered. Inside were multiple tables, some empty space for dancing and a small scene for the musicians. In the back of the room, a counter where a man was serving drinks. There weren't many people in the dining room, but the passengers that were at the tables were all dressed in elegant clothes. The twins shared a look of agreement that these rich people will not leave the ship without being robbed of at least one thing. They approached the counter and ordered something to drink and sat down. Next to them a young woman dressed in a beautiful red dress. Her blonde hair let loose on her back. They ignored her and she didn't seem interested in them either. They remained in silence until the man served them their drinks.
"Two glasses of palinca for you." The man said and put the glasses in front of them. Then he addressed the woman, putting a tray with five glasses filled with a red liquid in front of her "Miss, here's your visinatas."
The woman nodded her head. Rohan took his glass and tried his drink. It was the best palinca he has ever drunk.
"Jess, this is gold." He said as he took another sip from his glass. Jessalyin agreed, the transparent liquid burning her throat because of the concentrated alcohol in it.
"We should get some for E..him too." She rapidly corrected herself upon realizing that they were not alone.
"He seems more of a juice guy to me. Isn't he too young to drink alcohol?"
"Are you kidding me? He was chugging down a cup of wine not too long ago."
"Oh, right." Rohan said, only remembering this detail. "Then let's get him some too. Another palinca, please. You know what? Put it in a flask."
The man that was serving the drinks did as he was told, but didn't give them the flask until he was paid. He had to be sure that they will pay for their consummation. Jessalyin took out some gold money from the ones they took from Edhas on their first meeting. He did say that they could keep them. This seemed to pique the woman's interest.
"I have never seen such money before. Where did you get them?" She asked eyeing the money. Probably some rich girl looking for an even richer husband. Rohan wasn't very interested in her, but the woman was attractive so he played along.
"In one of our expeditions. Maybe next time we can explore something together." He said, his sister rolling her eyes at his attempt at flirting.
"Maybe we could." The woman smirked, playing with a glass of visinata. Her lips red like her drink. She locked her eyes with Rohan's "You know, I was about to return to my friends. Want to dine with us?"
"Absolutely." Rohan seemed absolutely mesmerized by the blonde woman, his disinterest disappeared in an instant. Jessalyin wanted to refuse, but if she was too adamant at refusing without a good reason it might seem suspicious. The woman smiled when she got her positive answer. She drank her visinata then got up from her seat, taking the tray with her. Seeing this, Rohan finished his drink and followed the woman. Jessalyin gave in and went after the two lovebirds. She couldn't let her brother alone when there were dangerous people on board. A little bit of socializing wouldn't hurt.
They followed the lady to a table in a corner, Rohan practically glued to her. The three of them approached a group formed of two women and a man. They were seated around a table playing a game of cards, waiting for their food. The man seemed frustrated because he didn't know what he should do next. He tried his luck, but the women he was playing with looked at him with superiority. In a few seconds, the man lost the game. The women seemed delighted and didn't continue the game.
"I really thought I had a chance this time." The man said, throwing a hand through his light-brown hair.
"Maybe next time."
"You always say this. You know, it wouldn't hurt you to let me win sometimes."
"Where would be the fun in that?" One of the women laughed. Then turned to look at the trio with curious eyes. She was a black-haired woman with, sun-kissed skin and grey eyes. Seeing that the woman's attention shifted from him to the newcomers, the man watched them with interest.
"Hello there Jaimin. I see you've got company."
"We've met while I was waiting for our drinks. Where's Devain?" Jaimin said, seating herself on one of the chairs, only the seat of the mentioned man remaining empty.
"You know how he is. He went to yell at some passengers. He'll be back." The man said, as if this was a normal occurrence.
"Why did you bring them here?" The woman that was silent until that moment asked. She didn't seem pleased to have unknown people at her table.
"These guys are very interesting. You should see what kind of money they use." Jaimin said sounding excited. She signaled Rohan to show the money and he did it without a moment of hesitation. The atmosphere immediately changed. The people at the table looked at the twins as if they just found their newest prey. This made Jessalyin uncomfortable. She excused herself and wanted to take her brother away from there, but he didn't even flinch when she pulled him.
"Leaving so soon? Please have a seat." The man said, sitting up from his place and forcing Jessalyin to sit down. The black-haired woman followed his example, offering her seat to Rohan. Following Jaimin to her table was a big mistake. They were outnumbered and Rohan seemed out of it. At least there were other people around. She doubted that they will attack them with so many passengers around.
"We don't want any trouble. If you let us go, we'll forget that this has ever happened." Jessalyin said, trying to negotiate with them. If the worst comes to the worst, they'll have to fight.
"You can go. But only after you tell us who gave you these money." Jaimin said. Rohan was looking at her with a lovesick expression.
"Edhas gave them to us." He said, evidently trying to please the woman. Jaimin smiled, caressing Rohan's face.
"Rohan, shut up!"
"Of course he did. Is he with you right now, my dear?" The woman asked in a sweet voice, waiting for the information she needed. Jessalyin knew the second Jaimin asked about the money that something wasn't right, but she didn't expect that they encountered the people Edhas has warned them about. Rohan opened his mouth to answer but his face was instantly hit with force by Jessalyin's fist. She couldn't fight all of them, but she could hit her brother's face if that meant that he would shut up. Rohan fell down from his chair because of the impact and he seemed to have returned to his usual self. That attracted attention from the people at the tables, but no one did anything to try to stop them.
"That was unexpected." The man said, trying not to laugh and failing big time.
"Arian, stop laughing! It's not funny."
"What's not funny?" The sudden question startled all of them. Out of nowhere, Edhas appeared next to the group with a sea mew in a hand and a spear in the other. He looked down at Rohan who was keeping his face with a hand and then at Jessalyin, from their stances, he could deduce what happened. It was funny. Jessalyin looked at him with a confused expression. What was he doing in the dining room when he said that he will not leave the room? Perhaps he knew that they were surrounded and came to help them, but that didn't sound likely.
"Devain, finally. These two are with Edhas. He must be around here too." Arian said, ignoring the bird in Devain's hand. All of a sudden everything made sense for the twins. The reason Edhas seemed familiar to the captain was because someone with the same face was already on board. And the reason Edhas didn't want to get on the ship was because he knew that if someone recognized him, it meant that they actually met Devain.
"Is this him?" Devain asked with a serious face, showing them the sea mew. Jessalyin and Rohan looked at each other and then at the man in front of them with perplexed faces. Was this guy for real? Then they remembered what Edhas told them about these guys being idiots.
"No...?"
"Damn it!" He said clearly frustrated, freeing the sea mew. The poor bird flew in every direction until someone opened the door so it could go outside. He took a chair and seated himself.
"Don't mind him, he hasn't slept in a week because his bed stuff kept disappearing." Jaimin told the twins.
As if on cue, when she said the word 'disappear' the chair under Devain vanished in a red smoke. He fell on the floor and didn't make any move to get up, resigned to the fact that he was now laying down on the floor.
"Take me to him right now, or I swear I'll tear this ship apart until I find him myself." It wasn't a threat, it was a promise.
