The door opened and standing there was a young man, with a broad smile on his face. Elijah quickly rubbed his eyes to try and conceal the evidence of his tears
“Theo! I didn’t know that you were coming back today!” Elijah exclaimed to the young man, attempting to sound like his usual cheery self.
The young man, named Theo Mulligan, chuckled and playfully ruffled Elijah’s hair. He was lanky and awkward looking due to the fact that he was so tall, but he had a very warm, friendly air about him. He was 20 years old, and had just graduated from The Dearly Departed Academy which is a prestigious school for reapers and had just arrived back home. Elijah looked up to him like an older brother and respected him a great deal because he had now achieved the dream of many by becoming a fully fledged reaper.
“Are you trying to skip school again, kid? C’mon, hurry along now. I’ll watch over your mother for a while, so you don’t have to worry.” Theo said, patting Elijah’s head.
“Yes dear, run along now. The doctor should be coming soon. Theo, thank you so much for getting in touch with this doctor for me, it’s truly a blessing.” Elijah’s mother said, turning her head to look up at Theo.
“Don’t even worry about it, it’s the least I could do. You guys are like family to me after all.” Theo smiled at Elijah’s mother, and she held Elijah’s and squeezed it, trying to reassure him that she would be ok whilst he was gone. Elijah sighed and admitted defeat, grabbing his bag and heading towards the hospital room door. He reluctantly said goodbye to his mother and Theo and left the hospital, dragging his feet as he went.
He got to the end of the street when he felt something strange. A horrible feeling of impending doom that really frightened him. He hadn’t felt like this before, and he began to sweat profusely. It was like there was some sort of pressure that was holding him down and preventing him from moving. He tried to turn back and head towards the hospital but his feet felt like they were weighed down by an invisible force.
“Come on, calm down. Everything is fine, I’ve probably just come down with something.” He thought to himself in an attempt not to panic and slowly started to make his way to the hospital.
Step by step, as he inched slowly closer to the hospital, the incredible fear that had been weighing him down only got stronger. Elijah didn’t know what was going on.
CRASHHH
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH- Grrrrrhh….”
All of a sudden, there was a loud crashing noise coming from the direction of the hospital. He then heard the haunting shriek of a woman, which turned into groan that sounded like something that definitely did not sound human. The people in the streets began scatter, everyone flying into a panic. Whilst they were running away, Elijah continued to head towards the hospital. He had to get his mother out of there, no matter what.
He stopped dead in his tracks.
The hospital had been reduced to rubble, and in it’s place was a terrifying creature, making the most disturbing noise that Elijah has ever heard. He continued to stare at this twisted monster. He then realised something that he wished he never did. This monster had a distorted human face, and the face was that of his mother.
“Mother..? H-how…why?”
Somehow, in the 5 minutes since he left the hospital, his beloved mother had transformed into an erratic soul.
Elijah fell to his knees in front of the monster, paralysed by fear and shock.
