Sherlock & Watson

Case #1: Murder on Cobalt Street (Part 1)

Case #1: Murder on Cobalt Street (Part 1)

Oct 08, 2021

Is it possible to live a normal life? When I came back I was so lost. The life that I have lived completely passed me by. The world wasn't put on hold. Maybe those men were right, soldiers who are coming back from war may not find a way to live normal lives again. How is it that men could talk about such a subject with light laughter? It's hard to hear such conversations. He told me that its because of the stress and war that is affecting both my mental and physical condition. I'm not so sure about that.

My memories, they are so mixed up, some of them are blurry, while others are as clear as day. Each time I close my eyes its hard to find a way to relax my mind. It also feels like something is missing too. I have no idea what it is. It's difficult to face these experiences alone. I'm afraid that I have built up a wall around me and I have no way to tear it down.

~ John H. Watson

A large structure comes into view as the trains rough ride begins to smooth out on thick tracks. The train enters the station and comes to a screeching halt. John is jarred awake from his sleep as the men behind him get up from their seats. Both well-dress men pass John's row, the taller of the men, glances down at John and his walking stick. He sneers at John before disembarking, the smaller of the men, tilts his head down and follows behind. Using is upper body strength, John lifts himself out of his seat, grabs a leather bag, jacket, and walking stick. With a slight limp in his right leg, John makes his way off the train into the crowded station.

Readjusting his bag on his shoulder, he takes a brochure from his pocket and glances at the map on the back. With the bustling noise, he decides to make is way towards the exit of the station. As he walks up the stone steps another man bumps into his left shoulder causing John to stumble forward. He turns to look in time to see a man lower his hat in apology before continue down the stairs. Making it to the top, the phone inside John's front pocket vibrates. With a heavy sigh, he limps over to a nearby bench, places his things down and takes a seat.

"Hello?" He says.

"John? John Watson?" The voice replies.

"Who is this?" John asks.

"Its me! Keith Lanyder, we were classmates back in college! I haven't seen you since my sudden move." Keith says.

"Oh hi Keith, I didn't reconize your voice for a moment." John says.

"I heard that you were coming back to the area. Did you want to grab a bit to eat and catch up?" Keith says.

"Sure. It's been a long time and we have a lot to catch up on. Its almost lunchtime, do you have a place in mind?" John says with a light chuckle.

He gets up front his seat with, picks up his things and proceeds to the exit with the phone still to his ear.

A cab pulls up to the curve on a side road. Up and down both sides are houses and apartment complexes. Sherlock opens the back door of the cab and gets out. He doesn't have anything with him except for his book. Glancing up and down the street he turns to the cab and offers him the ride fee. The driver goes to take the money from Sherlock but stops.

"Careful, I also don't think you would want your wife to discover some of your side activities that you do in between those working shifts." Sherlock says.

Flustered the cab drive quickly grabs the money from Sherlock and speeds off down the street. Sherlock stands up straight and just huffs.

"I told him to slow down. He will be pulled over at that rate." He says before walking down the side walk.

He places the hand with the book to his side and the other one behind his back. As he strolls down the street, his eyes gaze back and forth between all of the housing units. Each house he glances at the number and then whether or not there is an occupant in the home. Reaching the end of the street he turns down a corner marked with Cobalt and Turner street signs. Strolling down the street, several police cars race past him and pull up to a victorian-style home several houses down. Police rush out of the cars and enter the home.

Sherlock approaches the tape and his attention is diverted towards a body being taken out of the home and right behind a woman in distraught. She is handcuffed.

"It wasn't me! I just came home and found it there! Please believe me!" She pleads her case as they lead her to a patrol car.

A man with with a police's chief uniform comes out and looks at the woman, his badge reads, "Bryon Lestrade".

"We found the knife under your table and there is blood on your hands. We have enough evidence to arrest you on murder charges." Bryon says.

Sherlock watches with his left hand in his pocket and the book under his right arm watches the scene unfold. His focus turns to the body being wheeled out and he raises his eyebrow. With a slight smirk, he swiftly moves under the police tap and approaches the body. The men are shocked by his approach, and a nearby officer goes to stop him.

"Sir, I'm sorry this is a crime scene. You can't be here." The Officer says.

Sherlock completely disregards him and walks up to the stretcher. "So a man, in his upper 20s with discoloration on his hands, three stab wounds to the chest, and a leftover stain from form leaking from the mouth. It would seem that the death was internal and started before the victim was stabbed."

Sherlock examines the body by picking up the arms, closely looking at the mouth, and uses his hands to feel pressure points up and down the body. The officer behind him tries to get his attention and Bryon comes over to see what happened.

"What is that civilian doing here?" He asks.

"Excuse me?" Sherlock turns to Bryon. "Are you familiar with misdirection? I simply concept where one would distract another from their main focus by interjecting red herrings into their plans."

Bryon just stares at Sherlock and he puts his finger up. "Its also known as misleading."

Sherlock places his finger below his chin as he leans over the body. He moves his face closer and sniffs the man's clothes then examines the front and back of his wrists. Bryon completely speechless finally gains his footing again and grabs Sherlock by the arm.

"You need to get out of here. No civilians allowed" Bryon demands.

Sherlock glances at the woman sitting in the patrol car,  Bryon and then out of the corner of his eye, he catches sight of a man strolling down the sidewalk. A smirk appears on his face.

"My good man, I am suppose to be here you see. I came ahead of my colleague when we heard about a body being discovered." Sherlock says. A puzzled expression cross Bryon's face.

With quick steps he moves through the crowd, approaches the man and grabs him by the arm. The man is shocked by the action and can't break away from Sherlock's grasp. He is pulled back to where the body is and Sherlock lets go of him.

"We are a team that comes and solves crimes throughout the city. My name is Sherlock Holmes and this is-" Sherlock stops suddenly and elbows the man.

The man looks at him and then answers. "I'm John H. Watson-"

John is cut off by Sherlock who continues. "He is a doctor and a highly good one. Probably one of the best that has come back from the war."

John is completely blown away by Sherlock's words and Bryon glances between the two of them and places his head in his palm.

"I can't believe they called in two different teams. Its not that big of a crime. Its opened and closed." Bryon says.

John looks to Sherlock for some sort of answer but Sherlock leans over to John's hear and whispers. "You look like someone who needs a bit of adventure."

John eyes widen a bit as he looks at Sherlock, who responds by giving a small smile.
