The next few days have passed without any incidents. The trio remained in their room and used the time they had to develop a plan. In the end they decided that they'll improvise. Occasionally, Devain and the others would come to try to talk with Edhas, but Edhas ignored them, pretending that he couldn't hear their calls. The twins wondered why Devain didn't use a spell to get in the room, but they guessed that he couldn't do the same spells as his brother.
When there remained only a day until they reached the Isles, Edhas woke the twins up even earlier than usual, in his usual way: with his horn. For the twins, hearing that awful song was the worst part of their day. For Edhas, it was bliss because he could exercise his skills with the horn and got to annoy Jessalyin every morning. He saw it as an absolute win. The twins not so much, but they couldn't do anything else but wake up or the playing would continue.
"One day, I swear on Aahlaad, I'll burn that thing." Jessalyin said half-asleep. She threatened to destroy the horn many times before, and one day she'll keep her promise.
"Good morning to you too, Jessy." Edhas said happily, continuing to play.
"I'm awake, stop playing." Rohan mumbled, his face in his pillow. He was considering helping his sister destroy that awful instrument. But by destroying the instrument, they were risking Edhas finding an even worse one. Rohan didn't want to know if there really was something more horrible. He got up and Edhas made the horn disappear.
"Good, now we got to go." Edhas was enthusiastic to finally leave the room after so long. He moved his spear in a big circle and they were surrounded by a thick, red smoke. They were already used to this. Every morning Edhas would give them a new change of clothes. The twins suspected that these were their enemies' clothes, but who would say no to such fancy clothes. They got used to this.
"Go where? We didn't arrive at the Isles yet." Jessalyin asked, admiring her new clothes.
"I can see land out the window, I'll take us there." Edhas stated. Jessalyin wanted to tell him that they shouldn't risk their safety and that they should wait until the ship takes them there, but there were other people after the Stones. They needed any advantage they could get.
"Are you sure we won't end in the middle of the ocean?"
"Affirmative." His face was serious, his voice full of confidence. Jessalyin was convinced that they'll be fine. Or at least that they won't die.
"Alright, let's go."
They left the room. The ship was empty, everyone else sleeping at such an early hour. The twins were impressed that the other passengers didn't riot when Edhas played the horn, but probably they were too scared to bother the lunatic who played the horn. They arrived on deck. From there they could see the Isles. The snow shining because of the rays of sun. Truly a marvelous scenery. The cold wind was howling and some lost birds were singing. They admired the view for a while. The calm and serenity were ruined by a voice behind them.
"What a view." The trio turned around to find out that the voice was Arian's. The man was staying with his hands crossed. Edhas looked at him with a bored face. The twins didn't even bother to get into fighting stance.
"Isn't it a little bit early for you to be awake?"
"Isn't it a little bit early for you to leave?"
"Are you here to try to stop me?"
"If I asked you to stay, would you?"
"Why don't you ask me to find out?"
"No. I think I already know the answer." Arian ran a hand through his hair, looking defeated. They looked at each other in silence for a while. The twins seemed very invested in the scene that was playing in front of them, waiting to see what was going to happen next. To their disappoimemnt Edhas simply turned his back to Arian. He started to move his spear over his head, red smoke starting to surround them. He took one last glance at Arian.
"I'll see you on the Isles." Then the trio disappeared from the ship. Arian remained to look at the Isles until he saw red smoke on the shore. Edhas was already on the Southern Isles with an advantage of at least a day. Arian returned to his team. He had to inform them about Edhas' whereabouts.
Out of the smoke appeared the trio on the shore. The wind was howling and the waves were hitting the shore, leaving traces of ice when retreating. The twins seemed bewildered after their first travel through magic, even a little bit nauseous.
"I think I'm going to puke." Rohan said putting a hand to his mouth. "It would freeze halfway to earth anyway." His comment made Jessalyin and Edhas look at him with disgusted faces. Jessalyin also felt as if she was going to show them everything she has eaten the night before, but tried not to show it.
"Rohan, that's disgusting." The woman told her brother. Rohan didn't seem to mind her, more preoccupied to shiver because of the cold. The temperature on the Isles very different from the one on the ship. If when they were on the ship was cold, now it was freezing.
"You can't tell me that it's not true. It's freezing out here."
"I'm with Rohan on this one." Edhas was also shivering. "Why are you not cold?" He asked Jessalyin accusingly. The woman was behaving as if they were in a tropical place and not somewhere where everything was made of ice.
"I'm a fire magic user. I can control my body's heat." Jessalyin said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Edhas and Rohan looked at her as if they were asking her if she was kidding.
"You guys want me to do this for you too?"
"YES!" The men yelled in unison. They were wondering why she was even asking such a question when she could clearly see that they were freezing. Jessalin unified her index fingers and then touched the foreheads of the men in front of her. Immediately, they stopped shivering. They couldn't feel the cold anymore.
After they resolved their problem with the cold, they returned to their other problems. First, they had to find a populated place so they could ask for directions. They were surrounded by snow, but in the distance they could see smoke. Where there is smoke there has to be a fire, and where is fire there sure are humans.
"I'll take us there." Edhas assured them, already rising his spear.
"NO!" The twins said at the same time. They still felt sick from their previous magic travel and didn't want to experience it again so soon.
"I mean, why not walk a little bit? The scenery is so beautiful." Jessalyin tried to convince Edhas, without giving away her real motives. Rohan nodded. Edhas looked at the two of them confused. Everything was white. What scenery they were talking about was above Edhas' understanding, but he didn't want to judge because people from different places found different things aesthetically pleasing. He suspected that they were lying because they didn't want to travel by magic. In the end, Edhas decided to not say anything.
"Alright, let's walk." He said and began to walk in the direction where they saw the smoke. The twins breathed a sigh of relief and followed Edhas.
As they moved away from the shore the snow layer became thicker and thicker. It was hard to continue walking. Luckily, Rohan knew a spell and all the snow that was in their way would move itself on the sides. It was a draining spell, but it was worth it if he didn't have to travel with Edhas' spell again. What he didn't expect was for the source of the smoke to be much further than it seemed. His magic wasn't weak, or so he would like to say, but they were already walking for half an hour or so and he started to feel tired. The source of smoke were the houses from a small village. Edhas probably observed that Rohan's spell wasn't as efficient as it was at the beginning, because he offered to help.
"I can take it from here." But Rohan didn't want to admit that he was tired. He wanted to prove himself, so when Edhas began to move the snow with his own spell, Rohan intervened.
"No need. I got this." Edhas didn't seem convinced, but he shrugged his shoulders and stopped helping. He came up with another idea.
"Why not use the sword?" Edhas proposed. Rohan wanted to answer with a smart remark, but couldn't come up with anything.
"Because I didn't think about it, that's why." His answer wasn't the truth. The sword came up in his mind a few times, but he wasn't sure if he could perform magic with it. His eyes glow when he touches it, yes, but he wasn't sure if it was just a magical item or if he could do magic with it.
Rohan removed his sword from the sheath, his eyes instantly glowing a bright orange. He moved his sword a few times, unsure how he was supposed to use it. Seeing that his companion was lost, Edhas decided that it was his duty to show him.
"Try something like this." He started to rotate his spear in his hand, moving it from one hand to the other. He was clearly showing off his skills with the spear, but he wanted to look good in front of his teammates. After his little show, he fastly brought it in front of his face and then hit the frozen earth with the tip of the spear. Instantly, red smoke made way for them until their destination. The commotion attracted the attention of the villagers, because they immediately went looking for the source of the noise.
The twins were amazed by the power Edhas displayed. The village wasn't very far, but they still had to walk at least twenty minutes and he freed the path with just a touch of his spear. They didn't have time to proclaim their admiration, Edhas snapping his fingers and covering the path again. He did say that this was just a demonstration.
"Do I have to be as dramatic as you were?" Rohan asked, not really found of the idea of rotating his sword as if he was some kind of beggar making tricks in the town square.
"First, I was not dramatic. Second, I would really like to see you do this, but it is not mandatory. Hit the earth with the tip of your sword while thinking about the spell."
Rohan took a deep breath and did as he was instructed. The second he touched the earth, the snow disappeared from their path.
"Good. You're a natural. We have to work on your control though." Rohan looked questioningly at Edhas, not understanding why he would say that. When he looked at the path, he understood that it was because all the snow from the path was now covering the villagers that wanted to see what was going on. They were clearly startled by the reappearance of the path and by the snow that was now covering them.
"They're pissed." Edhas told the twins. The villagers were too far away for them to see clearly, but by their body language and the fact that some of them brought forks, Edhas was sure that they angered them.
"Let's go!" Jessalyin reminded the guys that they had to go. Edhas was still explaining about control and Rohan not listening to a single word and only looking at his sword. She knew that now that he had a taste of its power, he will use it often. She could feel that it would become annoying fast. Jessalyin started walking and the two men followed.
Author here. I feel like some things might be confusing about how the magic works, so I will post one chapter with all the details you need. Perhaps it's a little bit late to do it now, but still. Love ya <3
